Arranged for handyman to fit 4 blinds. Price agreed. 2 very small blinds, one a bit bigger and one large. He’s been here 5 hours and still not done.

Not only this but every time he goes out to fetch something he leaves my door wide open, I keep having to shut it. I’ve told him I’m really cold.

He’s been to the toilet three times. Left the door wide open the third time! I had to tell him to wash his hands ffs. The toilet seat left up on all occasions.

He’s making a fucking mess everywhere and has chopped a small chunk out of the window surround. I’m sat in my bedroom furious. I had important phone calls to make and I can’t do them.

What would you do?

Tbf, if a handyman is enough of a misogynist to take the piss like this just because the OP is a lone female, she may as well feed into it by alluding to the idea there's a strapping bloke or two lurking about who won't take his bullshit.

Yeah, that is a fair point

Put up your own blinds. Make sure you don't use the toilet while doing it either!

I’ve just read this again! Where, in my post, did I say I didn’t want him using my toilet?

Please Google him so you can find where to leave an appropriate review to warn others. Makes my blood boil that these cowboys think they can take the piss and take a piss like that.

Why does she needs to put them up herself? Plenty of reasons why we pay others to do work due us around the home we could do ourselves but choose not to and pay someone.
It's bad enough to use the toilet with the door open when it's your own family but it's a flat no when you're working in a strangers home.
Can I ask if you do every bit of diy in your home?

They’ll no doubt come back and say they do, fine. The point is, people everywhere pay people to do some jobs.

The dirty sod can do what he wants in his own home too, but he doesn’t get to be dirty in mine.

This is exactly why I hate having workmen in my house to do anything. The last one,who was a gas engineer doing the annual safety check on my boiler and central heating system was a bloody pain in the arse. Apart from turning up 3 hours late,he complained about there being a load of stuff 'in the way' in the gas meter cupboard. I failed to see how 4 pairs of shoes were 'in the way'. He then proceeded to chuck them all out all over the hall floor in a strop. He also walked wet, dirty foot prints all over the kitchen floor from when he went out on the balcony to check the outlet pipe. He kicked the cat's water bowl and sent water everywhere, put the balcony door keys fuck knows where so I had to spend ages looking for them. Just leave them in the bloody door! It took me half an hour to clear up after he'd left.

Runnerinthenight · 03/05/2024 17:40

God I feel your pain!

I needed my hall, stairway and landing painted before last Christmas. He was recommended, I saw his work. He came to price the job when he said he would. He was eyewateringly cheap (should have been a red flag but my very picky friend was happy with all the work he'd done for her). Came when he said he would. I was busy with work and left him to it, and I was on a call when he was leaving so couldn't talk to him.

OMG, the fucking mess he made! Didn't sand the bannisters. Paint drips everywhere, on other surfaces, on pictures, on my new hall runner. Bits missed. Globs of paint running down. I've never seen such a shoddy job in my entire life. I made him come back to fix it - I counted 30 mess-ups and he fixed some a bit but I am still spotting things months later!

I had booked him for another job but I cancelled, obviously! It actually looks better than it did if you don't look closely but only because it was so grotty before! Will have to find a proper painter and get it done again.

Told friend, who was shocked and embarrassed. Then she had him back to do a job for her and he messed hers up totally too, even though she had him back three times! I actually think the bloody man can't see. Honestly, a blind man on a galloping horse couldn't have done a worse job!

Why would he suddenly go from being good at his job to useless?? It feels like the world’s going nuts lately. Shockingly bad customer service just about everywhere, sheer bloody incompetence. Dunno, has everyone turned to drink and pissed at their jobs?

I put my own blinds up took about 2 hours to do all 5 windows.

Differentstarts · 03/05/2024 18:00

5 hours is ridiculous. I had 2 blinds fitted and I'm sure he was only about 30/40 minutes. What on earth was he doing.

upinclouds · 03/05/2024 18:09

If he's got an online presence, give him an honest review. At least you'll be saving someone else the pain in future.

I don't understand it - I genuinely do wonder if his eyesight is poor! I warmed to him when I met him, very witty man, but not having him back!

I read a post on our local Next Door earlier where someone was complaining about a plasterer who was a 'no show' twice, first time with a lame excuse, second time no excuse. The plasterer appeared to take the piss out of the poster!! Disgusting. I think there's more work out there than contractors to do it, so they can pick and choose and treat customers like shit.

There are still decent ones out there, it's just finding them! I had a bathroom gutted and redone last summer. Now the bathroom showroom fucked up spectacularly and repeatedly, but the contractor was amazing. Great attention to detail, so courteous and did other odd jobs for me like putting up a huge mirror! Even on the days he wasn't on the job and the tiler was, he came first thing to cover everything and last thing to clean everything up. He was brilliant but then he wasn't cheap by any means!

Bumbling about and making a mess. I’ll open a Facebook account and get some recommendations for any future work - and VET them!!

Or I could just do all the jobs myself because……well, a couple of others posters do!

Gosh i know your up set but calm down a bit me and other posters are just saying how long it took us to do our blinds.
You know it took xxx long whats he playing at.
But you seem to be having a go at posters for nothing thanks for crown i like it.

greengreyblue · 03/05/2024 18:20

Is this Hillary’s? My DF worked for them after he retired for a bit of extra money. He had no experience other than his own DIY and went on a brief course.

What a pisstaker.

I was recently put on to a handywoman by my sister. I was a bit dubious when I answered the door to a tiny little lady who looked like a stiff breeze would blow her over, but she was fab. Put up all our blinds, fixed our built in wardrobe doors which were hanging wonky, and replaced three upstairs doors in the space of a couple of hours. She was amazing. No fucking about at all, just cracked on with the job and did an amazing job of it too. It's a shame there aren't more handywomen out there for lone women to hire, I feel like it'd solve the "creepy pisstaking men" problem.

Isn’t ’my brother hasn’t got time to do it for me’ feeding into the misogyny of ‘a woman can’t possibly do a practical job like putting blinds up due to being female’?

Yes!
