Arranged for handyman to fit 4 blinds. Price agreed. 2 very small blinds, one a bit bigger and one large. He’s been here 5 hours and still not done.

Not only this but every time he goes out to fetch something he leaves my door wide open, I keep having to shut it. I’ve told him I’m really cold.

He’s been to the toilet three times. Left the door wide open the third time! I had to tell him to wash his hands ffs. The toilet seat left up on all occasions.

He’s making a fucking mess everywhere and has chopped a small chunk out of the window surround. I’m sat in my bedroom furious. I had important phone calls to make and I can’t do them.

What would you do?

I am sick to death of workmen atm, also a lone female. Had a few different ones in lately and every single one has cut corners, deliberately gone against what we agreed and done something different, rudely demanded drinks, promised the earth and delivered sloppy work etc etc.

I saw a post recently here where the poster said she borrows her brothers (or BIL's) work boots and leaves them by the door so it looks like a man lives there and she seems to have fewer men people taking the fucking piss.

I am so with you. There’s a catalogue of this crap. I said to someone lately “don’t ever think a workman won’t exploit a lone female, because they definitely do”.

I think I would want to ask him to leave but it could be awkward.

I wish I’d done it at the two hour mark. I’ve just gone nuts at him so he’s very reluctantly putting the last two small ones right. Either that or he doesn’t get paid.

Is it just the small 2 left to do? Are you paying for the job or by the hour?

For the job. I don’t know if he’s deliberately taken this long to make the price seem better or just incompetent, I’m thinking the latter.

Are they made to leasure blinds or is he having to alter them to the correct size?

We had 4 made to measure blinds fitted in less than 1 ½ hrs recently. If he's cutting etc i can see it taking a little longer, but 5 hours! No.
Has he said anything?

EatCrow · 03/05/2024 15:36

Made to measure. I don’t believe he’s a handyman, maybe he does a few jobs at his home but for payment, no.

<dry laugh> Well, the Dunning-Kruger Effect is more prevalent in men... I can picture it now. He spends 4 days putting together an IKEA flatpack inside out, mops his brow, admires his 'work', and decides he's such a genius he should set up as a handyman...

*wife mops his brow more than likely. I heard all about his life. Not one question about mine.

Can we blame his wife and mother for indulging his mediocrity? Or is that not in the spirit of the sisterhood? Grin

BirthdayRainbow · 03/05/2024 15:53

Not that you want to be telling him anything about your life. Unless to casually tell him about your built like a brick shit house brother who is due soon and doesn't take kindly to his sister being inconvenienced.

This is where the sisterhood comes a bit unstuck! 😁

To be fair I’m a private person (which is also why 5 hours of having him in my home rankled more), but he never thought to ask.

Yes, in future, my big brother hasn’t got time to do the job for me as he’s inundated with bouncing work, might do it.

We had our bay window done, two doubles and a treble. It didn't take much more than an hour.

He's horrible, sounds useless and is definitely taking the piss.

I feel for you!

It’s like a faulty tower sketch now but I’m not laughing. Out of all the handymen I could have got I landed on this one. I’m going to ask for his credentials.

Out of interest, what credentials? There isn’t a qualification to be a handyman (though some might have qualifications in other areas)

He’s gone now, left 15 minutes ago. I’m definitely not taking this nonsense anymore.

They consider themselves tradespeople though. I told him I was going to leave a review and asked him to remind me who he advertised with. He suddenly couldn’t remember.

Edited

Isn’t ’my brother hasn’t got time to do it for me’ feeding into the misogyny of ‘a woman can’t possibly do a practical job like putting blinds up due to being female’?

Trades people yes, but doesn’t mean he has any certificates of qualification etc. Obviously he should have insurance! Where did you find him? If is was Check a Trade or something similar….

By the same token, I should be putting them up instead of paying someone else to do it, is that what you’re saying? I mean someone else told me to put them up myself earlier in this thread, is that the answer?

I’m paying for someone to do a job for me. Can’t I do that now?

Have you seen the episode of peep show where Mark hires a Handyman to replace the bathroom door?

Yes something similar. That’s interesting though as this would mean we don’t know if any of them are competent in the jobs they say they are doesn’t it? I’ll be very wary in future.

Tbf, if a handyman is enough of a misogynist to take the piss like this just because the OP is a lone female, she may as well feed into it by alluding to the idea there's a strapping bloke or two lurking about who won't take his bullshit.
