Just curious. I’ll be voting for them reluctantly but I’m not really sure what can or will be done about the state of the country. It seems we’re skint so they’ll just have to tinker around the edges.

I’m really surprised I thought there was a lot of support for labour on here. Perhaps I confused it with hate for tories?

I don't like the Tories, but I'm likely to vote for them for the first time ever, just to try to keep Labour out!

Desecratedcoconut · 03/05/2024 15:31

Rachel Reeves isn't Gordon Brown, she has no truck with the poor or the vulnerable. She has made it clear that Labour is not the party for those on benefits. The Blair years aren't coming. Jesus, it that what people think?

Bignanna · 03/05/2024 15:31

Hyperion100 · 03/05/2024 15:27

It'd be nice to see a return to Britain under the Blair years.

Things just seemed to work and there seemed like a lot more optimism and hope in the country.

I fear the Tories have been following a scorched earth policy.

People will expect Labour to fix everything on day one and when they cant as there is zero money and the Tories have taken UK debt from around £1 trillion in 2010 to almost £3 trillion in the space of 14 years (Where the fuck has the money gone?!?!?!), the Tories will get in again and win IMO, at least 2 consecutive terms.

I'm expecting more of the same but hopefully with a little more integrity and honesty. Austerity, high taxes and tough times.

Edited

I think you have rose coloured glasses! If Labour were that good ,the Tories wouldn’t have won!

Allnormalhere · 03/05/2024 15:32

Welovecrumpets · 03/05/2024 15:12

I’m really worried. I feel like they’re going to crush us middle earners while also painting us as bigots to appease students, and spend any remaining money on concessions to keep the vote.

Maybe don't vote for them then!

There was no money left in the till when the Conservative Party took over from Labour. Hence the extreme austerity measures, it wasn't a joke.
I wonder what sort of note Sunak will leave for Starmer. "Sorry, there really really really isn't any money left?".

Both parties are a joke.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/may/09/liam-byrne-apology-letter-there-is-no-money-labour-general-election

Why have you linked to that article that explains the note was light-hearted and part of a long tradition of similar notes, and then stated "It wasn't a joke?" Did you not read the article you linked to or are you so arrogant that you think you know better than the man who actually wrote but you aren't going to explain how you know?

Bignanna · 03/05/2024 15:33

People are ready for a change but if Labour are not going to sort the major issues out, they’ve had it! As someone else said, they’ll be blaming the Tories all the time!

Hyperion100 · 03/05/2024 15:34

Immigration is a hot potato and something certainly needs to be done but the right of centre parties have blown it out of all proportion IMO. Some might even say dog whistle politics.

All of the illegal migrants that came to the UK in 2023 would just about fill a third of Wembley stadium.

Teentaxidriver · 03/05/2024 15:34

More predictions - wealth taxes and the adoption of TWAW and the concomitant removal of women's rights/ safeguarding for children.

Asiatoyork · 03/05/2024 15:34

I think it will still be a mess but hoping over time there will be gradual change for the better to public services. To pay a bit more tax. A bit less corruption and performative cruelty.

Tell that to someone who's been on the council waiting list for a house for years...

But the cost of accommodation etc is enormous, and unsustainable!

Women's rights and safeguarding for children will be the first to go...

I suspect they'll bankrupt the country again. That's what they do best. Promise, promise, promise. Spend, spend, spend. Then - surprise! There's no money left.

But people just hear "free childcare! More benefits!" and vote for them blindly. My local Labour council has completely bankrupted the area over the last few years, and as of yesterday they've just been voted in again.

Socialism sounds so lovely on paper, but in practice it just does not work.

This is exactly what I mean!

Blame the government for not building enough houses. They've had 14 years.

pinotnow · 03/05/2024 15:37

At first I thought this was an extremely depressing thread. However, then I realised that it's just a howl of anguish from the few remaining Tories after today's disastrous results and now I'm 😂😂😂😂😂. We've had 14 years of your shit and it's nearly over. Get used to it.

Can you answer the question?

A return of basic competence (no BJ lying, Liz Truss borrowing shocks).

A return to some level of decency (hopefully a lot less performative cruelty for starters).

I would hope, a big focus on improving the NHS and crucially social care (I don’t think these things can be tackled separately).

I hope that Labour are clever about systems thinking and really spend the money strategically well, eg putting money into NHS training, improving conditions so that people stay in institutions avoiding loads of temp staff. That way the little money there is can be maximised in its effects.

Lol

Okay, what do you expect to look different in say, 2026? Let's have it.

I don’t want them to build more houses. We already have serious flooding and environmental issues due to a lack of green spaces.

Labour will not win this election - the tories will lose it. And poor old Keir has no more clue how to tackle the country’s problems than my cat does, and that will become clear very quickly. I think we might be on the brink of a real loss of faith in mainstream politics, which could be quite dangerous.

passtheajax · 03/05/2024 15:40

I dunno, but education will collapse with all the private influx from people who won't be able to afford fees any longer. Private students won't cope in the cesspits that are mainstream schools at the moment.

Private ND pupils will drop out of the education system because they can't access mainstream ed due to the violence, chaos and bullying. This will include online schools which are far more affordable for ordinary people.

Ahhh socialists are so pleasant and kind.

Desecratedcoconut · 03/05/2024 15:42

I'd like to know how Labour would build more houses with the trade labour gap as it currently is? Perhaps they could get all the small boats workforce to try their hand at being sparkies.

Abhannmor · 03/05/2024 15:43

Build more social housing. Nationalise railways. Close tax loopholes. Windfall tax on utilities. Spend it on the above plus NHS and schools. Even Tory voters probably support most of that.
They will also support PR after they've been wiped out. Bring it. Single Transferable Vote. Not the opaque and dodgy list system.
