Just curious. I’ll be voting for them reluctantly but I’m not really sure what can or will be done about the state of the country. It seems we’re skint so they’ll just have to tinker around the edges.

A return of basic competence (no BJ lying, Liz Truss borrowing shocks).

A return to some level of decency (hopefully a lot less performative cruelty for starters).

I would hope, a big focus on improving the NHS and crucially social care (I don’t think these things can be tackled separately).

I hope that Labour are clever about systems thinking and really spend the money strategically well, eg putting money into NHS training, improving conditions so that people stay in institutions avoiding loads of temp staff. That way the little money there is can be maximised in its effects.

Yep sums up what I’m hoping for.

UltraLineHolder · 03/05/2024 14:37

I expect Starmer to roll back the one good thing the Tories have done, which was trying to put a brake on gender identity ideology.

Starmer let slip he has a trans child in an interview a months ago, which is why he's been so silent on making any noises about the outcome of the Cass Review. He's flip-flopping all over the place in whether or not men can have cervixes or women penises but once he's in I'm worried he'll go full Nicola Sturgeon (and male rapists are women etc).

Meadowfinch · 03/05/2024 14:41

Judging by the comments above, the general election is not a foregone conclusion.

People dislike the Tories intensely but was yesterday just a protest vote? When it comes to a general election will people revent to the Tories, especially if mortgage rates have started to come down ?

I hope to God, Labour don't get blasé and lose it again.

MissyB1 · 03/05/2024 14:41

To be fair Labour fixed the NHS last time they were in power (I was working in NHS then and the improvements I saw were really heartening), so I’m hoping they can do the same again. There’s less money around this time though thanks to spectacular mismanagement and poor decision making by the Tory twats.

Anyway right now I’d take Sooty and Sweep over this shower of shit.

There’s also no PFI or global boom plus high risk exposure which came crashing down

PFI was crap though as pp said it just defers tax debt to next generations

Bumblebeeinatree · 03/05/2024 14:43

Things will continue just the same with Labour blaming the outgoing Tories for all their problems for the next ten years. Then a swing to the Tories because of the terrible job Labour have been doing. Rinse and repeat.

Welovecrumpets · 03/05/2024 14:44

My main worry is that they’ll hammer middle earners yet again

I would appreciate being told the truth for once.
There is absolutely no money and the country is bankrupt so we won't be fixing this mess anytime soon.
I'll vote for anyone who says that.

There was no money left in the till when the Conservative Party took over from Labour. Hence the extreme austerity measures, it wasn't a joke.
I wonder what sort of note Sunak will leave for Starmer. "Sorry, there really really really isn't any money left?".

Both parties are a joke.

@HermioneWeasley 100% this.

I expect a lot of people will be very, very disappointed.

OriginalUsername2 · 03/05/2024 14:48

I would really like all parties to behave properly too. Stop all the smirking and jeering and act like professionals when addressing each other.

AnneLovesGilbert · 03/05/2024 14:49

Interesting thread. Couldn’t agree more with @HermioneWeasley

Of course they will. Middle, non-mobile earners are fucked to be frank, especially under a socialist Labour government. There are many, many of you and the government will need to pick your pockets a lot.

Monstersunderthesea · 03/05/2024 14:50

I think nothing will change really as there is no money to enable change. But I hope that actions taken will be in the interests of the British people for once, not the politicians and their mates. That alone gets my vote.

Grotbagg · 03/05/2024 14:50

Massive council tax rises to pay for pet projects
tax increases
the NHS getting huge amounts of money which will go on pay and extra admin staff but not anything on actually improving performance
anti semitism on the rise
hatespeak laws
the country down the toilet even further than it is now

Yes PFI was terrible. But the money Labour gave to improve services made a real difference. I was involved in rolling out the bowel cancer screening programme, we couldn’t have done it without massive investment from the Government.

Cygnetmad · 03/05/2024 14:51

not much - at least not for the disabled and those who care for them and are at the very bottom of the pecking order.

Teentaxidriver · 03/05/2024 14:52

An amnesty for small boat migrants which will act as a massive draw and the number will rocket in the expectation that everyone is guaranteed asylum.

Allnormalhere · 03/05/2024 14:55

I expect higher taxes, a push towards online schooling and allowing men to participate in women's sports.

PFI won’t be repeated

We’re still paying back billions from last time, off gov books though 🤔

This will be an issue imo

But overall depressing thread - more realistic than usual

They will definitely do that.

This. I am disgusted every time I see footage of the House of Commons. I teach infant school children they should be respectful and listen one of their classmates is speaking yet the adults who are supposedly running the country shout over each other like yobs.

As far as I'm aware, the Labour party is still filled with politicians so I don't think competence and decency will factor.

Blackbirdsinthgarden · 03/05/2024 15:01

Yep - higher taxes for their own pet/woke projects. I would happily pay higher taxation if it could be guaranteed that the funding would go to schools/social care/NHS but it won’t. The NHS is on its knees, not fit for purpose and needs a radical change. Too many highly paid managerial/diversity jobs instead of more nurses and doctors. They will probably throw good money after bad and the higher taxes will be lost in a big black hole. Nationalise rail etc? Give more power to the unions? I am old enough (just) to remember the chaos of the seventies, when we had power cuts, strikes, our bins weren’t being emptied (rats on our streets) and the union chiefs were king and held the Government over a barrel. Do we really want to return to this? The Shadow Chancellor is an economist and even she realises that to fund all their promises they need to raise taxes. Great, if the taxes went to social care (a big worry for all parties) but sadly, it won’t.
