I hate when people refute a point by saying 'You do know...'

If you countered a point with that simmering superiority in real life, you'd get chinned, and rightly so.

This. And also using surely…it’s so passive aggressive.

Snippit · 03/05/2024 11:59

Using POW for prices of Wales, when it’s always been used for Prisoner of War 🤦‍♀️, that one really bloody confused me.

Meadowflower2023 · 03/05/2024 11:59

HTH

It rarely does.

Ick" is a slang term that is commonly used to describe a feeling of disgust or aversion towards something or someone.

From Dr Google.

Thank you. I looked it up and found the same. But surely, if you feel disgust or aversion, you must feel uncomfortable. It's not as if a word can have only one definition.

I'll rephrase: Why can't people say "He makes me feel disgusted" instead of "he gives me the ick." There are many ways of saying that something or something is repulsive or disgusting, but many posters seem to rely on the copycat word "ick."

The OP asked about phrases that you dislike, and this is mine.

Oneearringlost · 03/05/2024 12:01

The word "Ladies".
I can't think of a single context where it cannot be substituted for a better word.
Not even "Ladies and gentlemen"

It's estate agent speke.

If in doubt, watch "Hello Ladies " with Stephen Merchant.

HeartandSeoul · 03/05/2024 12:01

“The hill you want to die on”. For some reason, this really irks me!

LordSnot · 03/05/2024 12:03

"DH works long hours"

"DH pays his ex well above CMS"

Does he aye.

phoenixrosehere · 03/05/2024 12:05

“Be grateful” usually with emotional manipulation before or after it.

ukku · 03/05/2024 12:09

fur baby. No...just NO

RabbitsRock · 03/05/2024 12:17

“Making memories” although that’s not just on here.

celico23 · 03/05/2024 12:22

Vitriol

No is a complete sentence.

It really isn't, though.

This one really annoys me.
It's so rude and no one in real life would just say 'No'

PriscillaPresssley · 03/05/2024 12:31

The overuse of the word vile.

I also don't like 'boils my piss'.

Posters shaking and crying at having to answer the door.

A poster today who had a 'physical reaction' to some news, did she vomit, collapse or perhaps have a migraine?

SerenChocolateMuncher · 03/05/2024 12:32

One of the most ridiculous and annoying things I can think of is describing something you like as "to die for".

Quite apart from the fact that absolutely nothing is that good, if you are dead, you can't enjoy it. So what's the point?

This one made me laugh, especially what it was in relation to.

myheadisaterribleplace · 03/05/2024 12:45

Not necessarily on mumsnet but I hate the phrase "it is what it is"

Crumpleton · 03/05/2024 12:50

Why can't people say "He makes me feel disgusted" instead of "he gives me the ick."

Who knows...could be because its an in thing of its time.
Even disgusted is a very strong word to use when it's not in the correct context.

PriscillaPresssley · 03/05/2024 12:51

"And what did he say when you asked him about this?"

When the poster is clearly upset and wondering if she has reason to doubt something.

In general some posters seem to delight in point scoring and being cruel

TheCadoganArms · 03/05/2024 12:52

"My DH has a hobby, I can't say what it is as it's too outing"

So he rides a bicycle at weekends then with half a million others.

Can you take in some ironing.

😂
I also don't like grim, give your head a wobble, you do you and iyswim.

FluentinSimlish · 03/05/2024 12:56

‘Think’. For example, “my teenager (think university age) has just devoured an entire chicken when it was intended to be used in a massive salad.”

OssieShowman · 03/05/2024 12:57

LTB

SagaNorensPorche · 03/05/2024 12:58

Give your head a wobble.
Fuck off to the far side of fuck
No is a complete sentence

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/05/2024 12:58

Sounds like ADHD / ASD / ODD / insert other alphabet soup of choice - it's getting to the point where having a self diagnosed "label" is almost obligatory on here

MsLuxLisbon · 03/05/2024 12:59

'Just my opinion', and 'just something to consider' when you have posted something that makes no sense and that runs contrary to what everyone else on the thread has posted.
