Reason for scheduled induction if baby not overdue

Hi,

What medical reason would a woman be given a medical induction when the baby is not overdue? I thought if baby was in danger an emergency C-section would be performed.

Women have their labour induced for many reasons be it medical, social or mental health causes.
This womans induction has absolutely nothing to do with you. Why are you so interested in such a personal thing?
You don't come across well in this post.

Yellowhammer09 · 02/05/2024 23:42

I was induced at 35 weeks due to a placental insufficiency and very poor blood flow to the baby, and a second time for reduced fetal movements (although 40+ weeks that time).

MonkeyToez · 02/05/2024 23:47

Ive had early inductions with all 3 of mine.

1st at 37 weeks due to obstetric cholestasis, 2nd at 39 weeks due to excessive amniotic fluid, 3rd at 39 weeks due to gestational diabetes, the fact that 2nd was 9lb4 and I suffered shoulder dystocias with both previous babies.

The 3rd time they offered a c-section but I requested an early induction instead.

RandomMess · 02/05/2024 23:52

I cannot believe you think it's ok to poke around like this.

I know 3women that were induced early due to previous stillbirths. Another due to the baby having health issues.

Have some bloody sense that it may not be for happy reasons.

johntorodesfatcheeks · 02/05/2024 23:54

maternal age
previous labours and things going wrong
medical factors to do with baby or mother

never for fun as someone who has been induced three times can attest to

hope that helps

Someone I know has had their induction. Scheduled from early on but is trying to cover up the reasons why, so I was curious to find out the medical reason.

Mind your own business you nosy busy body.
If she wanted to discuss it with you she would have.
Urgh.

steff13 · 02/05/2024 23:57

If you're the one who's being induced early then your doctor should have explained to you why. If you aren't the person who is being induced early then it's not really any of your business.

Mummapenguin20 · 03/05/2024 00:03

Mine was early because my baby was due on my mums first anniversary of her death mentally I could not and would not cope with that. Turns out I didn’t need the induction as I went early naturally but that was boooked weeeks in advance

AIBunnecessary · 03/05/2024 00:16

Lots of different reasons,

Baby measuring big or small, vbac, reduced movements, previous still birth/anxiety, can't remember the name but a fellow mum friend was induced due to the liver/itching thing, mother being diabetic or epileptic and struggling with control, excess water, amniotic fluid leak/ gone prob many other things.

LouH1981 · 03/05/2024 00:25

I was induced because they believed my son would be too big for me to give birth to naturally if he went full term.
Absolute shambles, he wasn’t at all ready to come out, facing completely the wrong way. Everything they tried to get me to dilate failed so I had an emergency section 3 days later because (I now know - didn’t tell me at the time) his heart rate was slowing down.
After all that, he was nowhere near as big as they predicted he might be.

Elephantswillnever · 03/05/2024 00:28

I was induced as concerned about pre eclampsia. Blood pressure, protein in urine etc all going in the wrong direction.

I was also induced due to OC. Honestly there can be lots of reasons why medics would rather baby was out sooner rather than later. Measuring large, poor growth, complications with health of Mother.

Term is 37 weeks for singletons. 36 was considered term for my twins. I found medics were keen to get babies to term but once over the line were keen to induce due to complications.

Honestly you sound really nosy but my inductions were planned months beforehand for completely different reasons so I don’t think you’ll be able to guess.

totallyfedup · 03/05/2024 00:35

I was offered an induction with baby number 4 as I was in utter agony with severe SPD I couldn’t walk.

I was induced on my due date due to previous very fast labours, I didn’t want to deliver a baby at home on my own with 3 other children in the house under 5 and no husband there.

women can be offered inductions for a number of reasons and it’s no one else’s business.

Gollumm · 03/05/2024 00:37

Why do you use the words 'covering up'? Nobody has to tell you their personal medical information no matter who you are to them. Mind your own business!

Latenightreader · 03/05/2024 02:13

Not telling you does not equal covering up. It is hugely personal and can be a painful decision or reason. Let them decide what they tell you (if anything) and when. I can only hope you are worried about them, rather than just being nosy.

Nat6999 · 03/05/2024 02:33

I was induced for pre eclampsia at 36+3, ds was born by emcs at 36+6.

Lemonvalley · 03/05/2024 03:40

There can be lots of reasons (baby or mother) where induction is recommended.

It can also be recommended simply as a matter of routine, if you go past your due date.

when I was pregnant with my daughter and 40 weeks, I was booked in (without any say) for an induction the following week (41).

i was unhappy with this this because my health checks had all been perfect and so had my baby’s. I was told that it was done to make sure baby is born by the 41st week at the latest, because the risk of still both increases once you’re 42 weeks.

I refused to have the induction they were trying to force on me and ultimately I went into spontaneous labour at 41 + 5 days and had a perfectly healthy and average (3.5kg baby).

Every situation is different but make sure you have all the information and your voice is heard.

NightCzar · 03/05/2024 03:49

I was induced second time because it has worked well the first time. The obstetrician offered to do it because my mother was going to be visiting for 3 weeks to help with the older one, so we planned it to be at the start of her visit.

MariaVT65 · 03/05/2024 03:56

Could be any number of reasons. One of my friends has it because her baby wasn’t growing enough. Another friend had it because she has type 1 diabetes which normally means induction as she needed to be strictly monitored, and the baby was huge.

But, it’s literally none of your business and you’re a terrible friend.

DrJump · 03/05/2024 03:59

I had uncontrolled insulin requiring gestation diabetes and repeated reduced fetal movements so had an early induction with DD. The birth was stupidly fast. My other two were well over due DS1 had a few sweeps. DS2 was 42 weeks

How rude of you. I wish now that no one had answered your question because I suspect you are going to be trying to analyse which one she might have.

It sounds like she has good reason not to tell you if this is your response.
How horrible for her to have your nosiness in her life.

RocketPanda · 03/05/2024 04:16

She's probably 'covering it up' because she doesn't want to discuss her medical history with a nosy Parker like you.

Why does she need to share her reasons why?

Stop being so nosey.

ineedtostopbeingdramaticfirst · 03/05/2024 05:44

Lots of reasons why you might have a planned induction. Due to baby or mother's health or past pregnancies.

It's not your business though. Why do people think women's pregnancies are up for grabs.

My sil mentioned her friend said she had to see a consultant and have additional scans . She was very scathing and implied her friend was probably making it up as the birth went smoothly and there were no health issues. I mentioned that I saw a consultant and had additional scans with dd2 purely because dd1 only weighed 6.3lb . This was despite ds1 weighing 9.5lb!

WithACatLikeTread · 03/05/2024 05:45

IVF is a reason for induction.
