Humiliated by John Lewis staff

Hi
okay so I know this will seem very trivial to some but it is playing on my mind because I think I am a very reasonable and polite person and feel I was humiliated for absolutely no reason.

so I bought a jumper from a John Lewis store (Sweaty Beaty brand). The jumper was in the sale for £65. I wore it once and washed it according to the instructions. I put it on yesterday and my Mum commented that it had faded, the jumper is beige but I noticed it had a big white patch where the colour had seemingly ran out of it on the front. As I know John Lewis is known for their customer service I decided I would take it to the store to see if they would offer an exchange, I still had the receipt showing it had been purchased recently.

I went to the womenswear till but the queue was massive (I had my 12 week old baby with me) so I went to a till near the shoes. The girl serving must have been about 17/18. I explained to her what had happened and said I wasn’t sure if I could swap it but thought it was worth an ask. The girl was very polite but said she needed to check with a colleague, fine not a problem. She returned with a colleague who didn’t even acknowledge me. At this point there was a now a queue at the till. They both turned away from me and girl number 2 started whispering and inspecting the jumper. This probably went on for about 10 minutes. Girl number 1 then turned back to me and said something to the effect of I’m really sorry but I need to check with a manager…I assumed girl 2 was a manager but again I said okay. She then called someone on the phone. I continued to wait and at this point my baby started to cry, girl number 1 obviously feeling uncomfortable called again and apologised, again fine as not her fault that baby is crying or that manager is taking a long time. So eventually the manager turns up and calls me ‘sweetheart’ okay a term of endearment but I am a 34 year old professional so odd of her to do. Anyway…she inspects the jumper and says she can’t see the white patch, I said to her I couldn’t either until I went into natural light and my Mum pointed it out. At this point I am starting to feel agitated and embarrassed as there is a queue, my baby is crying and I am basically being told I’m making things up so I say ‘don’t worry about it for the sake of £60 I’ll just have the jumper back,’ she then says to go with her outside the store to natural light to show her the patch…seriously? I reply no it’s fine I’m not dragging my baby outside I’ll just have the jumper back. Again she insists I go outside with her and I again say it’s fine I’ll have the jumper back. She then turns to girl number 1 and says ‘you’ll come with me outside to look won’t you’ so they both then walk off and leave me at the till with my now screaming baby. Sometime later they return with ANOTHER member of staff, so now 4 people have looked at this bloody jumper! The manager says they all agree there is nothing wrong with it. Now I am quite frankly pissed off and humiliated and say ‘ I told you I would take the jumper back but instead I have been standing here whilst 4 people inspect it, I didn’t demand a refund I simply asked if it was possible to do anything such as an exchange.’ She replies there’s nothing wrong with it. So I say (probably wrongly so but I’d had enough) ‘if you go on my account you will see how much money I spend in this store, do you seriously think I would make things up to get back £60?’ She replies again there is nothing wrong with it.

for context I worked in retail for years both before starting university, during and after (the irony is I actually also worked in that John Lewis 😂) I get that it can sometimes be shit and people are rude but I was honestly lovely and feel I was humiliated and spoken to like an idiot.

However I am also overly tired from the sleepless nights….so AIBU to wait to complain to the store?

I don't normally shop in JL, long journey to one for me but the occasions I've dealt with them they haven't been great.

  1. I wanted a piece of furniture but didn't want self assembly, wasn't clear on their site so I phoned and asked, definitely no self assembly. Arrived in about a million pieces, DH said they might as well have send us a plank of wood and a saw.
  2. Christmas present arrived from JL, the card inside the parcel was to John, not my name, from someone I'd never heard of. Phoned them to say I had someone elses parcel and where was mine. The response was basically what did I expect them to do. Never got my parcel but I think the present buyer got a refund when they complained.
  3. Charge for JL on my credit card for over £300. That summer I'd been to a wedding, a Christening, two graduations. Had I forgotten something I bought, phoned JL explained and they said they couldn't tell me what "I'd" bought or where or where it had been delivered to due to data protection. Protecting the thief presumably. Sainsbury's bank were great and were no impressed with JL at all.
I don't understand why they have a good reputation for customer service.

They should have given you the jumper when you asked for it OP, I think I might have told them to give it to me or I would be reporting a theft.

I can’t believe I went through 20 pages and THERE WAS NO PHOTO OF THE JUMPER!!!!!

I suspect the invisible stain doesn’t show up on film either.

I can’t believe this thread is still going with some posters character assassinating the OP a person they don’t know- how charming!

Verv · 02/05/2024 16:50

Haven't RTFT but if a mark is only visible in natural light then it would make sense to inspect it in natural light.
Sounds like a mountain out of a molehill tbh.

Is it just me wondering why anyone would want to buy clothes from a brand called Sweaty Betty?? 🙈

I guess anyone who feels ok about about wearing a sweatshirt?

bringoutthebranston · 02/05/2024 16:53

I don't think I would have behaved any differently in your shoes. Your baby was getting more and more distressed and I know how that feels with a newborn (they sense your frustration too!). I would assume that they would just offer you a refund or a straight swap without the drama. Its not like you didn't have the receipt and you might have nicked it!! sometimes store assistants have bad days (I have been one of those too), they may have been trying to train a new recruit but I don't think this showing a good example of customer service to her. I would definitely write to the complaints department but just point out that maybe they need to look at their customer service training without throwing anyone under the bus (although you would need to go outside the store for that too - sorry my sense of humour!)😊

Grammarnut · 02/05/2024 17:11

Had a similar experience at M&S but got the money back. But salespeople have a frequently ropey job, so I'd have taken the jumper outside to show. If it was marked I would want the jumper exchanged because £60 is a lot of money for something you now won't wear, and I object to wasting my money. Why was your baby screaming? Did it need feeding? In which case (if breastfeeding) ask for a chair and feed the baby - this will get them galvanised to doing something about you, as well, attitudes to breastfeeding in public being what they are in some places! As to jumper, wash it again and see if the mark disappears i.e. general fade.

Burpie · 02/05/2024 17:19

I don't think they did anything that could be considered humiliating to you. They can't just refund things that have been used, washed, and have no faults.
Ok, so you would have rather given up earlier than wait for them to bring the jumper outside. Oh well not everyone acts 100% how you want them to. It's not a big deal, and it's not humiliating, just because you have more money than them doesn't give you control over their actions.

Nextweektoo · 02/05/2024 17:31

A lot of people say their customer service has gone downhill. Just take your money elsewhere.

peakygold · 02/05/2024 17:31

Maybe you splashed a bleachy cleaning product on it by accident? I've done that. I hate the assistants in John Lewis. I have no idea why they think they are something special.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 02/05/2024 17:32

More fool you for spending £60 on a jumper.

ziipidydodah · 01/05/2024 22:19

Yes. That’s pretty much the whole ethos of customer loyalty in retail.

That's why those 20% offers for first time customers annoy me. Like fitflop. I'm not rewarded for choosing them repeatedly? it annoys me.

I think it was honestly all in your head.

Seriously? The poor woman is traumatised enough without a bit of gaslighting thrown in☹️

Highfivemum · 02/05/2024 17:58

John Lewis has gone down. Same as marks and Spencer’s. I suppose they are being more careful these days as their are a lot of scammers and the genuine ones like you lose out.
I had the same with marks and Spencer’s. A little boys outfit that her wore once and it ripped right across the back. My DC was 7 months so not rough play or anything. It hadn’t even been washed. I took it back to marks and they refused to do anything. Said they would send it to their warehouse to be inspected !!! Never saw it again and surprise surprise they denied ever seeing it. Never but in there again

Whaaaaat?! Did you get up half an hour before you went to bed. Did you grow up in a cardboard box.

To be fair to them, they’ve got no idea if you or your baby ripped it, they’ve only got your word that you or the baby didn’t damage it.

I think margins are tighter and more people have tried to scam them though, and I’d have followed up on the warehouse where it was sent.

Yanbu, you were served by inexperienced staff in a well known reputable store. I’d expect this treatment if I bought from a boot sale.In a store such as JL the item should have been exchanged as you had your receipt. A seasoned sales person would never have subjected you to such a jobs worth performance.

But weren't you going outside anyway? So what would be the hassle? It's because your baby was crying which made the situation appear worse than it was.

It had been worn and washed, and showed no obvious fault. Having the recent is totally irrelevant.

Leedsfan247 · 02/05/2024 19:03

Given that you have washed I would say you’re on a sticky wicket. It could have been caused by your washing machine or your detergent. The store will not get a refund from their supplier so would have to swallow the loss.

JL has a certain type of consumer, they’re not usually in the habit of purchasing shoddy items that only survive one wash.

The point is that the supposed fault was not obvious. In fact it couldn't be seen at all in artificial light.

fetchacloth · 02/05/2024 19:10

Unacceptable.
I would take photos of the jumper in natural light and send these to John Lewis Head Office with a written complaint, along with the store's details.

Hollysberries · 02/05/2024 13:15

How is taking a faded garment into daylight 'dragging it out'?

It's very GOOD service to establish a fault because in some cases there would be a product recall.

Because by that point the OP had already told them to forget it and asked for the top back.

And let’s be honest here, they weren’t, at this point, looking to refund her. Quite the opposite. They weren’t listening to her and needlessly dragged it all out.
