To think colleague has bitched about pot noodle

Last week a colleague said to me "I would never have thought of a pot noodle for lunch!" which I thought was a bit random.

This morning we have all received an email from comms about keeping fridge clean and "avoiding overly smelly and slurpy foods" in lunch room.

Mhmm..

Yes, I crunch Doritos quite loudly, which is why I only do it when alone.

When around others I take steps to minimise crunch and smell, as is the respectful thing to do.

We aren't saying no one should ever eat in public, but it is common sense to realise that some foods (like a pot noodle) are more antisocial than others.

Well, 'we' are saying that your eating is likely annoying someone.

And Doritos stink out a room.

Soonenough · 29/04/2024 16:43

Would not have classed Pot Noodle as a particularly smelly or slurpy food . Can't believe that HR would take on board anyone's complaint and issue that email. Tell the Lunch Police to fuck off.

Delphiniumandlupins · 29/04/2024 16:44

Who on earth decides what is "overly" smelly or slurpy? I'm not a huge fan of Pot Noodles but they are definitely lunch fodder. Keeping communal fridges (and microwaves) clean is a minefield. Carry on having a lunch you enjoy (sit facing a corner if you think people are glaring at you 🤣)

I'd be tempted to work my way through a list of smelly foods just to make a point.

Tuna
Kimchi
Asparagus
Garlic
Popcorn
Durian

...by the end of it, they'll beg you for pot noodle! :)

I'm craving for durians now!

I'm sorry but they are disgustingly antisocial things with the smell and thr slurry eating sounds.

Think of it as a favour to your health.

Don't got to China, Japan, or Korea.....

fayesbrolly · 29/04/2024 16:46

TBH I wouldn’t have thought of a pot noodle for lunch as I doubt it is really classed as food

What do you think it is it then? A snack of some sort?

I'd have classed noodles as food, and fine to have for lunch. Though I don't know how filling they would be.

The sound of someone eating a pot noodle makes me want to slam my head into the table.

Noisy and smelly foods aren't appropriate for small, communal work spaces.

Rubbish, food has a smell, that's the nature of it.

Boiled eggs are the worst!

I can see this going the same way as schools who insist healthy options only 😆

DuchessNope · 29/04/2024 16:48

My normal lunch is some chopped vegetables (whatever is in fridge) with dried noodles, miso paste, chilli, fish sauce and ginger. I bring it in a tub and add boiling water at lunch time. My colleague calls it a posh pot noodle. I don’t think I make a noise eating it. I normally eat all the bits with a fork then drink the broth.

Not sure why I felt the need to share that but it’s typed now so you have to read it sorry.

PercyJackson · 29/04/2024 16:49

Where do you work that your company feel its ok to send round emails telling you what you can and can't eat?! Fine if it relates to an allergy, but otherwise, just bizarre..
Especially since 'smelly' is particularly subjective. I hate the smell of egg - but someone else might love it, and hate the smell of my pickled onion monster munch.
If slurping isn't allowed, what about crunching? I find that far more annoying.

WhoppingBigBackside · 29/04/2024 15:35

Why couldn't you have a mahoosive salad like a normal Mner?

People have lost sight of a mahoosive salad - they add two lettuce leaves instead of one and cause terrible crunching noises in the office.

Maddy70 · 29/04/2024 16:51

Unless work provides you with meals then you can bring wtf you want to eat for your lunch

They can do one

hopscotcher · 29/04/2024 16:54

Tbf, good for them if they've reminded staff to keep a shared fridge clean and not stink out a communal space. I wouldn't care if it was my Pot Noodle that had precipitated the message.

rubbish,
curry is very popular with masses of people, myself included.

Which is why I only eat Doritos when alone, not in communal spaces.

As I quite clearly stated.

You're just trying to hammer home a point that doesn't exist now.

ScottBakula · 29/04/2024 16:58

Pot noodles are very low on the offensive food list imo.

As pp have said eggs , fish, curry, are all more smelly but still perfectly normal lunch food.
Be grateful you don't work with a subcontractor that I did last year , he tried to microwave eggs for his lunch . They were still in their shells , all 4 of them !
They threw the microwave away !

MillenialAvocado · 29/04/2024 16:58

It's fine as long as you weren't slurping. Noises like that make me want to tear my ears off.

The Doritos was a side point. Even if you ate them alone, they stink out a room for the next person.

The point stands. Everyone's eating habits can be annoying, hence a more tolerant approach is needed, within reason.

tigger1001 · 29/04/2024 16:59

Food was being eaten in the lunch room! Who would have thought!!

Not like it was at their desk. Surley that's the point of a lunch room?

Pot noodles/rice type things are common lunch foods at my place of work

Boomer55 · 29/04/2024 17:00

They stink. 😑

KreedKafer · 29/04/2024 17:02

Literally nobody in any office I've ever worked in would think it was 'antisocial' to eat a Pot Noodle at work. It's not different to eating any other hot food. It's not like microwaving kippers, ffs.

BigFatPuddingMonster · 29/04/2024 17:04

heathspeedwell · 29/04/2024 15:43

The message specifically mentions slurpy so I wonder if you are a noisy eater OP?

I mention this because lots of people have misophonia which is a genetic neurological condition that can make sufferers feel homicidal when they hear noisy eating like slurping sounds or lip smacking.

It really is no fun at all for sufferers to be stuck in a room with someone who is totally oblivious to how much distress they are causing.

I don't think lots of people actually do have misophonia. It's a fashionable affliction to have currently so lots of people claim to have it, when in actual fact they just dislike certain noises.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 29/04/2024 17:05

Slurpiness is next to satanliness.

For shame.

Windintrees · 29/04/2024 17:05

Never have I ever had a pot noodle. I need to try one so that I can comment fairly. Which brand and which flavour.
