Vans

The clothing label.
Not the vehicles.
DS wants Vans clothes.
All his mates wear Vans.
Apparently it's a really cool label.
DH says its a skateboard label and only skateboarders should wear Vans clothes, anyone else will look stupid.
DS is not, and never will be, a skateboarder.
I say you can wear Vans even if you're not a skateboarder.
Anyone with any inside info on this?
Which one of us is BU?

I wonder if OPs DH is called Simon.

If it's you, please keep DH's real name out of this. Not fair.

Or Charlie Grin

Tell your DH that many brands start off as one thing and become mainstream. Carharts arent' just for workmen, Northface is not just for mountain climbers, Adidas is not just for running races. He needs to lighten up and allow your son some choice in his clothing.

DH says this has made his mind up.
He's not dressing teenage DS like a 52 year old woman.

Own up that you're the husband, it's ok if you are. You just look silly.

I DON'T MEAN THE SHOES!!!!!!!
Jeez, did any of you read the 3rd line down of my OP?!?
CLOTHES.
Please do not let one more person answer me with a comment about the shoes!

Don't be so flipping rude

lonerider · 26/04/2024 23:18

Ds wears van trainers because skateboards kill 'normal' trainers as I found to my cost!
He also wears vans off his board(s) because he finds them comfy.
Your dh is being ridiculous, as other than the shoes being specifically designed for boarding, the rest of the clothes are just bog standard branded goods, you don't need a particular t.shirt, hoody or backpack for doing the ramps, flipping the board or doing stunts just a good helmet, and a ton of bribary to get aforementioned teen to wear it!

Just keep reporting, they're just a bored person at the end of the day not a genuine poster.

My husband is a skateboarder and does not wear Vans. He's been a skateboarder for 25 years.
I am not a skateboarder and I wear Vans.

TheCultureHusks · 27/04/2024 02:58

We don’t care what your DH says because he’s stupid

Tarkan · 27/04/2024 03:06

I used to be a skater (albeit a good couple of decades and a little bit more ago now) and I wore Vans shoes because they were great on my board. I didn't wear Vans clothing.

DH was not a skater and he has a Vans t-shirt.

I didn't realise it was in again but it was never "just for skaters" even back then.

We weren't allowed to mention shoes!!

Tangelablue · 27/04/2024 04:22

Just get the lad a vans hoodie and tshirt. Stop being tight.

YoureALizardHarry11 · 27/04/2024 06:01

Something tells me OP’s on a wind up 🤣

fettybord · 27/04/2024 06:02

We are a family of Vans fans.

3 if my DC skateboard.

The other 3 of us do not.

GloriaBunniford · 27/04/2024 06:19

Hmmm.
So from what I can gather from this thread, if you're a kid who skateboards then you don't wear Vans, and if you're a grown woman on mumsnet you do wear Vans.
Interesting. And not the response I was expecting.
Anyhow, I'll hold with the view in my OP that I think DS can wear Vans if he wants to. Whilst DH was originally saying he can't because he's not a skateboarder but is now saying he doubly can't because he's not a skateboarder or a woman (even though I've explained to him that I've learnt from this thread that true skateboarders don't actually wear Vans, but this just made him even more confused).

nothingsforgotten · 27/04/2024 06:30

I wear surfing brand tees and I've never surfed in my life. Same sort of thing. Tell your DH to get back in his corner - and also tell him that your DS is far more likely to know what young people are wearing than he is!!!

LlynTegid · 27/04/2024 06:33

Yes anyone can wear them, though I do think you should discourage your DS from being what I used to call a fashion victim, or just spending excessive amounts on things such as footwear.

Tangelablue · 27/04/2024 06:52

So DH has put his foot down and that's that? Does dh decide what you can wear aswell. What would happen if you bought a tshirt for your son?

doneandone · 27/04/2024 08:36

It's just a brand op, same as any other.
Let ds wear vans.
