Baby Reindeer creator is provoking his stalker

SPOILERS AHEAD
I’ll preface this by saying I had a male stalker for 7 years. I moved, changed jobs, and deleted all social media in that time. I’m also a survivor of SA, as well as assault after being spiked, similar to RG in the show.

It completely baffles me that he would completely replicate his stalker down to physical likeness, occupation, accent, exact correspondences and references like hanging curtains.

He is clearly not too worried about people finding the real person, as well as her potentially contacting him again.

If it were me telling my story, I would change all identifying details of both of us, because I would NEVER want to go through it again. RG telling his story this way is hugely weird to me and really speaks to the theme of mutual obsession he hints at in the show.

I wonder if all this is some sort of set up or a performance art thing. Nothing would surprise me these days.

Wow. The thread has obviously been massively derailed but some of the comments on here are quite shocking. It’s clear that some people believe men simply can’t be victims of sexual harassment or violence. Their experience and feelings might be different from a woman’s experience, or your personal experience, but it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

Has anyone said that? The woman is a prolific stalker and her previous victim had to get a restraining order. However that victim, Laura Wray, is also apparently troubled by recognising her from the TV show, and is clear that the woman is very mentally unwell. She commented:

'I feel sad that she managed to slip through the cracks for so long when she's clearly unwell’… 'He's had an Edinburgh Fringe show that featured this story and now he's got this hit series on Netflix and absolutely good luck to him, but it must have occurred to him that people were bound to speculate on who Martha is – and whether she's done this to anyone else’….'They could have changed things without diluting the content, but they've made it so realistic.

In other words - her previous victim, whose husband she threatened, and who reported her to SS, shares the same concerns as many on this thread.

I reported one of your posts. It's not patronizing or sexist to call out abusive language.

I read it, it wasn’t abusive.

Thank you!!!
No idea how on earth MNHQ deemed that to be abusive.
And it's a pity that it wasn't just hidden instead of being removed so that others could see it wasn't actually abusive either!

Well I suppose the mods must be wrong by that logic. You can read the talk guidelines if you are unsure.

Sometimes, on MN generally, trolls cause distress and derail threads.

Usually, the best thing to do is not to engage at all. Give them oxygen, and they thrive.

Also to reiterate that calling out offensive language is not misogynistic, misandrist, sexist, or in anyway wrong. If people are unable to communicate properly it's normally a sign they lost the argument.

I think the mods have did a great job.

Yeah. It would be nice if the mods dealt with it but here we are.

I find it all very bizarre, I think there is something extremely strange about it, if someone was as unhinged as she was and had so easily fixated on me for the simple favour of a free drink, I'd want to know they were either dead or in prison with no chance of release before I 'taunted' them like he has done.

Something doesn't seem to add up and it's not that I think he's necessarily lying (although nothing would surprise me) but there is something not right about the whole thing that I can't put my finger on

To be fair I think it is important she's allowed to stare her case. I suspect the drama element has played a part also.

Definitely best to ignore completely.

The trans woman that played Terri also gave a great interview about how she incorporated her experience as a trans women into the show. She found it triggering, but seems like the experience helped her deal with the transphobia she's faced.

I thought he might have fictionalised his comedy act to make it seem toe curlingly awful, but youtube videos confirm he is indeed a terrible comedian.

If the netflix series is a true depiction of his character, you can see he has a tendency to "poke the bear", so making his stalker identifiable is part of that behaviour. He had a shit time so I hope this somehow brings closure and helps him.

It seemed to me like his comedy was an outlet and for some victims that's very unique. I found it interesting that the trans actress found parts of the filming difficult too, but she did such a wonderful job.

I've never wanted a thread to hurry up and reach 40 pages more!
It's mostly just one poster now having a right chat with themselves 😂

Your not forced to read it all.

I think most people stopped reading a long time ago because they can't take anymore of this torment 😂

LongLostDoll · 29/04/2024 00:16

Sometimes creative folks process their trauma differently, i.e. via the arts.

It appears nothing this man does is unnapealing to you.

Sounds like he's processed his trauma to benefit financially.

I must admit through the show I began to dislike his character, even more so after the show knowing he has completely controlled the narrative and left the other characters unable to defend themselves, from any reasonable starting point.

ExpertInNothing · 29/04/2024 00:17

You arn't actually saying anything though.

Just say you liked it and think RG is great.
I don't really think you care about any victims somehow.

I think calling out those who accuse him of provoking his tormentor is important. Not just me that's spotted some the gaslighting on this thread, others have too. I've just been more vocal.

I don't have an issue with the forum, just the fact that people with an agenda are allowed to post away on here unhindered.

Any more links to share? 😂There's only 4 pages left to fill and I'm sure most of that will be you with your links or one sentence musings.

You seem to have taken over this thread as your very own one man show! Next stop Netflix!!

Do you think he may be benefitting from getting his story out first???? It would be interesting to see what it was like from Teris perspective for example.
