Clothing in the gym

I have seen this going around - do you agree with him?

I think I do, I really don't understand the current trend of ridiculously small shorts shoved right into arse cracks and bandeau bras for working out.

I go to the gym 2/3 times a week and feel no need to dress like this.

Or, are they just 'dressing for themselves?'

But rest periods are taking in water, collecting new weights, sitting taking a breath - not scouting the gym to find people to disapprove of

Threads like these are a good reminder that some people clearly have way more free time than me. Long breaks at the gym to scope everyone's outfits, lol, I wish. You're lucky if I've even had to time to find a clean sports bra with which to distract husbands.

Womblingmerrily · 26/04/2024 10:54

I absolutely disagree with him.

People wear gym wear at the gym - not a surprise.

Gym wear is often (but not always) tight fitting with a high percentage of lycra because you need a wide range of movement to work out properly. This means it shows the contours of the human body.

The human body is something we all have and we can often see it's contours in certain situations - the gym, the swimming pool, the beach.

Just because you can see someone's body outlines, does not mean that they want you to stare at it. It most certainly does not suggest that they are offering themselves up in any sexual way.

Yes people look, that's normal - to stare is not normal and can be challenged.

If this person is so unable to control his own emotions he should use his neck and eyes to look away. If it shocks him so much that he may be unable to control himself or fall into a victorian maiden like faint, then he needs to take steps to help himself.

This counts for all sizes and shapes of bodies - everyone has a choice in what they wear. Of course people will have an opinion on it, whether they like it or not - but their opinions and thoughts would be best staying inside their own heads.

Edited

I agree, my gym wear is tight lycra, for ease of movement and it's good material for when I sweat.

However, it isn't sexualised. it isn't revealing. I'm not spilling out of it, you can clearly see I'm clothed and i do not seem naked. There is nothing at all about it that unnecessarily catches someone else's eye. It's smart, fashionable and makes me look good without again looking sexualised.

I seldom see it in my gym but occasionally even i don't know where to look. It's not about them looking good, many do, again without it being sexual it's about it being too revealing, like its not going to support or keep them 'in'.

I'd have te same issue with a bloke topless with shorts so tight they'd put your eyes out.

The tight lycra has to serve a a purpose at the end of the day, it won't if you're squeeze into it and spilling out of it, it think that's the point the post was making, it leaves NOTHING to the imagination.

HooverTheRoof · 26/04/2024 18:10

I sometimes look at an attractive man and have sexual thoughts. I keep them to myself and carry on with my day.

These are the leggings I mean - you'd have to be living on Mars to not know what I mean

I live in north London and I didn't know. Sorry. <<shrug>>

If you think any heterosexual man isn't going to notice when a woman is doing squats in these then you are delulu
If a decent man has several women dressed like this around the gym the forced effort to make sure he is not inadvertently looking in their direction would just make the whole gym thing not worth doing.
You can guarantee no woman is wearing this shit because it's comfortable
The disingenuousness of women dressing like this and feigning outrage when men look at them is ridiculous. ^
Funnily enough they are not offended when a god like Adonis looks.^

Notsurewhatsgoingonhere · 26/04/2024 18:16

I think men and women should just dress appropriately and respectfully.

I don’t want to see willy outlines in cycling Lycra. I don’t want to see women’s arses. For the same reason when I started swimming I bought a swimming costume, rather than a skimpy bikini which is appropriate for the beach where you’re trying to tan, but not appropriate for a place of exercise.

NonPlayerCharacter · 26/04/2024 18:17

Of course he's going to notice, it's just not an excuse to act in a creepy, intimidating, threatening or intrusive way. He notices, he sees, he looks elsewhere and concentrates on his lifts. It's not hard and if it is, too bad. He can stay away from the gym if he's not capable of behaving himself there. You've clearly scoured the net for the most extreme examples you can find anyway, but that doesn't actually negate any of this.

Now I'm off to hate some men!

It's so funny that you actually went looking for pictures of tiny gym shorts. What on earth. 😂

I often wear bright patterned leggings to the gym. I don't do it to be intimidating; I just like bright colour and prints. Why does that intimidate you?

in my experience it screams look at me, I’m loud and I am going to let everyone know about it.

they also seem to turn up in gangs.

it’s a friendliness forced upon me when all I want to do is get the exercise over with.

The problem is what is acting civilised. Clocking the looking away because lots of people in here would say that was offensive. People on this thread are saying men should not even notice them.
I know decent men who say it's flipping nightmare. They focus so hard on not looking even in the vague direction of women dressed like this that they can't look anywhere other than at their feet.
They don't want to be accused of perving so they literally look at a wall to avoid the possibility of someone accusing them.
It's not shorts or spurts bra type tops. It's women wear short short scrunch pants like the pictures and teeny bra tops with their tits literally hanging out and then disingenuously accuse men of perving.

Wear what you want but take ownership. If you wear something designed to attract attention don't feign offence when you get it

You do realise this is not a thread about women complaining that men are looking at them, right? What it is, is in the absence of women complaining about being looked at, and the opportunity that affords to blame them for that; someone has had to resort to blaming women because they are being looked at by men who don't want to look at them. Its what you might call the scrapings from the bottom of the 'things to blame women for' barrel.

I was called a MILF today at the park, with my toddler, wearing joggers. I will wear what I want thanks, clearly it makes little difference.

And why shouldn't they look at the wall? I don't watch other people when I'm at the gym? Do they need to be able to look at women all the time?

Have you ever actually gone to a gym? In between sets when resting people look around. Not with any great focus but the sheet they would anywhere else. Who the hell stares at a wall???? 😂

Anyone seen the videos of influencers recording themselves in revealing clothes to catch men out?

There is a certain kind of person who chooses to dress this way and then act outrage if someone dares to notice. Half the men in these videos are barely even looking in their direction.

In general I have no issue with this kind of clothing. I don't have time to go to the gym at the moment, but I'd want to (try to!) look good and not feel weighed down so 🤷‍♀️

The thong is genuinely inappropriate: my labia would be out if I squatted in that thing.

The hot pants are definitely revealing, but fine

Exactly. And if they are looking it's because the women have set up an entire film studio in the gym 😂
Or because they are wondering when the hell they are going to stop filming and piss off so real gym users can use the equipment

Of course women shouldn't have to worry that their clothing choices will result in unwanted attention from men but surely the point of those ridiculous shorts is to attract attention, they're hardly being worn for comfort are they. No need to equate anyone to a porn star though.

Of course they are being worn for comfort.

I wear short shorts (and a sports bra) when I'm running because I can't deal with anything flapping and I get ridiculousy hot.

I would wear them at the gym too but I go for leggings because I don't like my legs and people can see them more when I'm just in one place.

I buy gym sets because I like them and I like the way they look on me. I usually have a cropped hoody on hand because I can get cold when I'm waiting in between sets.

I accept that people might look at me and form an opinion but keep it to yourself, don't oggle, don't make comments to strangers. Most people don't want attention, leave them be, men or women, think whatever you want privately.

RubySloth · 26/04/2024 18:44

Sapiens · 26/04/2024 09:42

So men aren't allowed to find women attractive? And not even look?

Seems weird given that's pretty much entirely why we're all here

Are you a guy?

WaitUpForMe · 26/04/2024 18:51

Creepy men will be creepy regardless of what women are wearing.

I used to wear leggings and top to the gym and some men were creepy bastards, so much so that I invested in gym equipment at home and no longer go to the gym.

Women can wear what they want, men are capable of controlling their behaviour.
