Would this upset you or am I being silly?

Whilst cooking dinner I told my aunt a cooking tip. Perhaps everyone knows about it, and it seriously is a tiny thing, but something that works well in a recipe. I'm probably the last to know!

My husband leaned over and smirked at my aunty and uncle and said "for my next tip, I'll be teaching you all to suck eggs".

Everyone thought it was hilarious and laughed loudly.

I know its a just little thing but I felt upset and stupid. Face went red and hot. My husband said there's nothing wrong work what he said.

Am I overreacting? I can laugh at myself normally and do. I dont know why this upset me, DH doesnt normally poke fun at me in front of others - which is what it felt like. I'm being silly right?

I have a tip.

don't get riled up about inane shite and post it on mumsnet

Hallelujah to that. The fact that he does not see what he's done wrong - if anything - is how men operate. We don't write a subscript.

FleurdeSel · 22/04/2024 20:38

It was unkind.

He would hate it if you did this to him. It probably would not be as funny.

Rosesanddaffs · 22/04/2024 20:40

He was being mean, the fact that you went red, surely he would have noticed that xx

therealcookiemonster · 22/04/2024 20:44

Janpoppy · 22/04/2024 13:23

He was mocking you, specifically your intelligence. That is embarrassing. And it feels humiliating when your partner undermines you in front of others and gains a cheap laugh at your expense.

The fact he's not interested at all in how you feel about it, and feels entitled to decree that he did nothing wrong says he probably enjoyed putting you in your place.

honestly if you live life not being able to take a joke, it would be a very boring life

ChangeyMacChangeName · 22/04/2024 13:29

It was literally such a simple thing, adding Greek yoghurt to flour to make flatbreads. I'm sure the world knows but I didn't.

He said it in a jokey voice and my uncle and aunt both laughed.

Well I didn’t know that and I cook a fair bit, so thank you, OP.

FangsForTheMemory · 22/04/2024 20:47

PS your husband is a bit of a twat.

i think i must be the only person that has only just learned the tecnique to open an oxo cube.. but i still tell everyone and his dog about it.. cos its new to me

@nervousweddingguest

I don't know how to open an Oxo cube, what is the tip?

No, seriously, I don't know how to open an oxo cube....

I'm sorry dear but this is mumsnet. the way to open an oxo cube is to create your own 24hour bone broth using the bones of the chicken you fed your family from for the preceding 5 days.
alternative vegan options are also available and involve saved vegetable offcuts/peels etc.
also @nervousweddingguest don't let any of the admin catch you advising other mumsnetters to use oxo cubes, they will come for you. if I were you I would make a massive mumsnet salad right away as repentance.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 22/04/2024 20:53

@therealcookiemonster - and that salad would naturally be made from the left-overs of the small chicken you had roasted the night before, for 6 people?

Kandalama · 22/04/2024 20:54

mewkins · 22/04/2024 16:01

I agree. It sounds like he had nothing useful to contribute to the conversation so made an unfunny joke at OP's expense in order to get a laugh. You've told him it pissed you off so I'd just pay attention to whether he does it again or is more mindful in future.

Agree
Maybe your dh was feeling inferior to your superior knowledge ( I’m going to look up this flat bread recipe now btw thanks OP)
So he diverted attention to himself at your expense!
This would annoy me, it’s belittling and I’d be telling him not to ever do it again.

Topseyt123 · 22/04/2024 20:55

This wouldn't have really bothered me. My response to DH if he said anything like that would be somewhere along the lines of "bugger off arsehole!!" Said as banter, in jest.

StormingNorman · 22/04/2024 20:58

pensione · 22/04/2024 13:25

He was an absolute cunt.

Let me guess, you do all the cooking, OP?

Please stop cooking for the twat.

What!?! That went from 0-60 in record time.

Goldiex · 22/04/2024 20:59

There are babies dying of incurable illness, war everywhere you look, poverty left right and centre.. respectfully, it was a joke.

StormingNorman · 22/04/2024 21:02

It sounds like a joke to me. Me and DH banter like this all the time.

BeavisMcTavish · 22/04/2024 21:04

we see some nonsense on here, but this one has me floored.

I can’t believe this very clear joke is even thread worthy, let alone some of the bat shit replies.

If it was accompanied with a knowing eye roll, a nudge of the elbow and a follow up comment of ‘my god she’s thick sometimes’ then yeah, have words, but if its as described, it’s the biggest none event ever.

Lassiata · 22/04/2024 21:09

If I had said something and someone told me it upset them, I wouldn't then say 'well I still find it funny and would say it again"

Yeah he's a twat, why do so many men find it impossible to ever be even slightly even in the wrong, and what the fuck was the point of his non-apology?

Redcarsontv · 22/04/2024 21:10

Well I didn’t know that either OP. Thanks for that tip.

your DH was a twit at that precise moment. I had one exactly the same but he did it constantly belittling me, he’s now exDP. If it was a one off try forget it.

therealcookiemonster · 22/04/2024 21:15

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 22/04/2024 20:53

exactly right

ClamFandango · 22/04/2024 21:17

My Dad once made me cry with a similar remark when i was telling my Mum a method of cooking fish I had discovered. I was excited about it and Mum was listening (maybe smiling and nodding politely, but still...) and he interrupted me with something like "fancy telling your Mum how to cook a piece of fish!" and the sudden interruption and tone embarrassed me and made me cry.

He did have the good grace to apologise later though.

MotherofDogs3 · 22/04/2024 21:20

Oh god you wouldn't last 2 minutes in my family we forever taking the piss out of each other 🤣

Yes you are definitely being OTT sorry 😬

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/04/2024 21:21

Well, I think it was him being mean and wanting to knock your confidence. I don't see the need to do that to anybody when they were happy and chatting about something they know useful tips; it would be like DP taking the piss out of me for mentioning Shift-Windows Key-S to take a screenshot or Alt-Tab to switch quickly between programs in the context of using a computer - obvious for some, but certainly not to everybody.

Iwasafool · 22/04/2024 21:31

I wouldn't think it was to do with that specific tip but more that I assume your aunt is older than you. The full saying is "teaching your granny to suck eggs" so it refers to the age difference not if the tip is any good so it wouldn't upset me but I'm more at the granny end of things!

pikkumyy77 · 22/04/2024 21:31

Its pretty obviously a hostile comment dressed up as a joke. Its only “banter” if everyone is doing it. It inserted itself in a perfectly normal social interaction and transformed it into a rebuke of the OP for being a stupid show off teaching her betters something they already know. In an instant a perfectly friendly bit of chatter was made out to be a stupid brag. But it wasn’t—so the “joke” was simply mean.

Maybe they all burst out laughing because of their embarrassment at seeing this shitty, hostile, treatment? I think that would have been my reaction.

I really enjoy cooking and have never heard of this tip. It doesn't sound like an obvious tip to me, but he probably didn't mean any harm by his joke either.

Keep it sealed and crush it in the packet then open once crushed? 😉
