To think this dress isn’t too sexy to wear to a wedding?

SIL wedding in October, attending as a guest. Is this dress too sexy? Too bridesmaid-y?

I always go for bodycon dresses as that’s what I feel most comfortable in, I am size 10/12 and an hourglass body shape so not sure what else would suit my body type really, I find a lot of other dresses make me look huge/frumpy.

I don't like the dress and style myself, but I don't think it is too sexy for a wedding.

@MaisieMacabe Yeah, October not mid-winter in Honningsvag! A jacket over that would look horrendous and unless the shindig is outside she won't freeze!

Others are also recommending a jacket, not for weather reasons but because there is too much flesh on show! Eh, where?!

I don't believe that I said it was for midwinter in Norway, in which case a thin jacket over a dress would not suffice.
Possibly October will be balmy. Who knows.
However, a light jacket is a good suggestion in light of average temperatures.

I would be far too cold without something over my shoulders in that dress in October.

The entirety of the model’s shoulders. Which wouldn’t be appropriate for a wedding in a church.

She won’t freeze, but she might be uncomfortably cold especially if there are photos taken outside.

@marmiteoneverything

So, every bride that's ever worse a strapless wedding dress was 'inappropriate'?!

Ethylred · 21/04/2024 14:17

Weddings are a celebration of sex. Go for it.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 21/04/2024 14:22

It's quite difficult to answer because it really depends how formal the wedding is and how you plan to accessorise it. I personally think it's more club/evening attire than wedding day guest.

Cherrysoup · 21/04/2024 14:24

I aspire to your figure! Defo a jacket rather than a wrap, you’ll freeze in the UK in October.

I think brides can pretty much get away with whatever they want, but OP isn’t the bride.

I might be wrong (I’m not religious), but I have always been under the impression that you should cover your shoulders in a church 🤷🏻‍♀️

Gasps... shoulders??!! What a tart!

wandawaves · 21/04/2024 14:58

Also why are shoulders so horrific, but the green dress is showing cleavage, which everyone is saying is more appropriate?

Take it up with God, not me! I was just explaining why, I assume, several posters have mentioned wearing a jacket over it until the evening.

RampantIvy · 21/04/2024 15:52

The wedding isn't taking place in a church.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 21/04/2024 16:08

I'm similarly 'hourglassy' and dresses this shape suit my figure the best, so I understand. The flowy floral frocks that are normally recommended on wedding guest dress threads would make me look like a walking armchair (when I'm actually slim!). I like the long sleeved versions OP, and think you should choose something you love.

Mirabai · 21/04/2024 16:20

The green one is much better. I didn’t like the brown or the one shoulder look.

LuckySantangelo35 · 21/04/2024 19:42

whate you do OP do NOT wear a jacket! No jacket will look right. You’re likely to be inside most of the time anyway. If you’re a bit old cold just suck it up for the sake of a fab outfit

do not even think about a BOLERO as some have suggested! Soooooooo old fashioned

Mirabai · 21/04/2024 19:45

In October OP def needs a coat or jacket. Shivering in a thin dress is very Aintree.

FrannieGallops · 21/04/2024 19:48

I don’t like the dress because it’s dated and draws attention to big hips on the model. A jacket would be all kinds of wrong - it would cut you in half and be extremely unflattering.

I’d wear a lightweight coat in a light colour (perhaps something patterned as the dress is so plain) and ensure it was exactly the same length as the dress.

Notthatcatagain · 21/04/2024 19:53

In October you will need a vest with it and possibly a short fur jacket

mitogoshi · 21/04/2024 19:54

Bit too clubby for me. Also draws attention to the wearer and not in a good way. Not keen on bodycon for more formal occasions

Teacherprebaby · 21/04/2024 20:25

Gorgeous dress, don't listen to anyone who says to 'tone it down' 💃🏼

@Notthatcatagain

a vest?!

what on earth do you mean??

SallyWD · 21/04/2024 20:48

You have a lovely figure and would look great in that dress. For me though, it doesn't look very weddingy. I kind of think of dresses you wear to weddings as being a bit more pretty - I don't know it's hard to explain but I wouldn't expect someone to wear a skintight dress to a wedding. However, I don't really have much knowledge of what's fashionable or stylish so I could be completely wrong.

Calliopespa · 21/04/2024 21:17

@marmiteoneverything

I think they might be thinking of the “legs or shoulders, but not both” approach. Not many brides have both short dress and shoulders bare.

For me it’s less that it would cause the officiant to choke and more that I think OP cod west something a little more “ in the mood” of a wedding and more on the current pulse. If she isn’t much bigger than those other photos ( as she has explained) I really don’t think she needs to feel limited to body con styles alone in order to not look big. I’m sure she’d look lovely in so many things.
