To think this dress isn’t too sexy to wear to a wedding?

SIL wedding in October, attending as a guest. Is this dress too sexy? Too bridesmaid-y?

I always go for bodycon dresses as that’s what I feel most comfortable in, I am size 10/12 and an hourglass body shape so not sure what else would suit my body type really, I find a lot of other dresses make me look huge/frumpy.

I agree with those who are saying the first dress looks a bit cheap and dated. This one is still figure hugging but much more elegant.

Afraid I think more hen-do than wedding (and definitely not bridesmaid). If you’re set on a very fitted dress then I think you need a longer length and more shoulder coverage. For example:

These are all lovely too.

VestibuleVirgin · 21/04/2024 06:51

No wedding attire to me, but I am decrepid!

Scarletttulips · 21/04/2024 06:52

And half price in the sal buy 2

Scarletttulips · 21/04/2024 06:53

I love the dress. And I’m old!

If you can’t find anything for over it, ask a Seamstress to add sleeves.

There choice to go under it as well if that’s what you want

NewLifter · 21/04/2024 06:57

I love the green! The colours of the other two are pretty awful.... you have a gorgeous figure OP.

MountCaramel · 21/04/2024 07:02

RampantIvy · 21/04/2024 06:42

Wow!

There is nothing frumpy about that dress. It may not be the height of fashion, but it isn't frumpy (a word I hate).

I move in different circles from mumsnetters because no-one I know follows the mumsnet "rules" about what is suitable wedding guest wear.

@Ginspirational you have an enviable figure. Wear what suits you and what you feel comfortable in. I know I would be cold without a jacket but you may be made of tougher stuff than me.

@RampantIvy I think the brown colour makes it look frumpy, it doesn't look frumpy in green though. But i still think the op could find a more modern version of a body con dress. The dress gives off cheap Towie contestant vibes to me. The op said the venue was a post hotel so the dress doesn't match the wedding venue imo.

BananaLambo · 21/04/2024 07:05

Get the green dress. It would look amazing with lashings of gold or even bronze jewelry.

Ginspirational · 20/04/2024 22:08

Oh wow I can’t shut up now.. it comes in green which I think I love!

Id go with this one. Its lovely.

CelesteCunningham · 21/04/2024 07:56

I'm not known for my style or fashion Grin but all the super stylish, slim women around me seem to be wearing very loose stuff ATM so I don't know if you'd feel a bit out of place in comparison to other guests? That may not bother you though, and more power to you if it doesn't.

Does the first style come in that gorgeous green colour? Pairing it with a long, loose, modern blazer (not like a sales assistant fitted blazer, a more relaxed fit) could look amazing with your figure.

But again, I know feck all.

Also I've been a size 10/12 hourglass shape back in the day - sure as hell didn't look like that, no fair! Grin

CelesteCunningham · 21/04/2024 07:58

Not these colours, obviously, but this is the kind of thing I meant.

It is a no for me.

Not appropriate for a wedding and it looks very 'Kardashian' to me which I find vulgar.

Calliopespa · 21/04/2024 08:40

Ginspirational · 20/04/2024 21:40

Thank you @marmiteoneverything - it’s a fairly posh hotel wedding so no church to consider.

I just feel like those type of dresses are all I know. But this has thrown me off, especially with it being October, I’m very used to summer weddings.

Just very wary as it’s SIL, I’m going to be in photos and want them to look lovely and appropriate too!

Could you ask SIL?

Same here.

theduchessofspork · 21/04/2024 08:44

Yes it’s fine, if it’s a UK daytime winter wedding, put some sort of jacket over the top for day / or get a version with sleeves.

Then this is fine for the after party

Squish12 · 21/04/2024 08:45

MountCaramel · 21/04/2024 06:20

It's a bit dated tbh, like the mid noughties Roland Mouret body con dresses. I think you could find something more current and in a more suitable colour. It is a frumpy looking dress.

Book a stylist session at John Lewis, Fenwick, liberty's etc just to get ideas on styles which suit your body shape. You have plenty of time to find something stunning.

Frumpy?? Lol 😆 it's the polar opposite of frumpy

TubeScreamer · 21/04/2024 08:49

Too much flesh on display imho.

I agree
The dictionary definition is:
drab, old-fashioned, and unattractive.

Ginspirational · 21/04/2024 08:51

Haha thank you everyone - a variety of responses which these posts always seem to get anyway, it is of course subjective 😊 I have decided to go with the green, I think it’s a nice balance!

@Allfur I’m not sure, I have tried on a few dresses that just made me lose all shape and look much bigger than I am. I find that bodycon just suits my body type the most. Or skater dress, but that wouldn’t really suit an October wedding.

I am a new hourglass figure (used to be more bottom heavy, but got left with big boobs after pregnancy & weaning) and honestly the trick to not looking frumpy is to just have something that nips in at the waist. It doesn't have to be hourglass. It can even just nip in under the bust and be A line. You just need to be able to show some definition under your bust and between your hips.

I hope that helps. I had to throw out a load of loose tops that looked pretty with my small boobs but look frumpy on my new figure as they hang off big boobs, make you look bigger and then your hips go out, so you just look generally large rather than curvy.

People say hourglass figures can wear anything, but I honestly found it easier to dress small boobs.

Mayflower282 · 21/04/2024 08:55

Depends where the wedding is, if it’s a local registry office and bar afterwards I think it’s fine. If it’s a formal church and sit down 5 course wedding meal in a stately home then no, I don’t think it’s appropriate at all sorry.

MaisieMacabe · 21/04/2024 08:56

Is it for an evening do? (Sorry if I've missed that).
If you like bodycon, then go for it.
It's a dated style, and silhouettes now are looser, but go for what you like.
You'll stand out, of course.

minipie · 21/04/2024 08:57

I love the green dress

I do think these dresses are a bit different from the ones you wore before, those look like very fitted tailored styles whereas this one is stretchy and clingy iyswim.

Honestly I think it’s borderline as a style for a traditional daytime wedding, due to the clinginess, but with a blazer or similar will be ok.

I would add to my comment that I think bodycon dresses were in about 10 years ago - so it's a bit of a dated look.

You could probably find something looser that nips in a bit as I described that is more "current". However in all honesty just wear what you feel comfortable in. You can look great without following the fashions tbh, so not sure if that matters to you. You also have a great figure

Unsuitable for a wedding unless tou put a jacket over
