To think that Landlords have a bad name.

NC for this.

Is it just me or are all landlords frowned upon a MN.

We own and rent out 3 properties all our properties are rented out to young families, just under market rate, we allow them to decorate their homes how they like, and if there is any issues or problems they just call us and we sort it out ASAP.

I know that there is some terrible landlords out there, that should be dealt with but there are thousands of other that are decent that follow all the laws and their tenants are very happy.

As it happens I don’t hate private landlords as a group. I have been entirely civil to the OP despite her prickliness.

My irritation was at a halfwit (landlord) who called me a liar.

I just think the system should be reformed.

It is interesting, though, how defensive and how ready to insult others landlords are on this thread.

You said you despise them.

Top marks for searching! Bit odd but fair play.

I withdraw my earlier comment in this thread that I don’t hate landlords as a group. The last few posts (not yours, assuming you’re a landlord: you’ve just been assiduous in your research) have reminded me that I do in fact have an intense dislike of private landlords as a class of trader. They are, often, unwilling to accept any criticism or suggestion for change. And of course many are thoroughly bad and unfit to offer housing to anyone, as I’ve already said in this thread. Not every one of them of course: some will be very good.

None of that has anything to do with reform of the housing market.

You lied about not hating them, so what other bollocks have you told on the thread? 🤔

How embarrassing for you.

I’ll take the criticism for contradicting myself on my view of landlords in two threads. Though I do think researching people is weird and creepy - and IIRC - against MN rules, not that I’m bothered by that.

’Lying’ is wrong. Inconsistent I’ll accept.

If you have anything worthwhile to say on the subject of landlords do go ahead.

Lol. When I despise things, I don’t need reminding that I do. Genuinely hilarious.

I think you can put it down to me being polite.

And since I’ve been civil to every landlord poster on this thread - apart from the abusive fool - I can’t see why my view of landlords matters.

I don’t have to like or dislike landlords to think that BTL is a bad thing.

daisymoo2 · 22/04/2024 23:35

@WhatsTheUseOfWorrying The housing problem is one of supply and demand. Are you trying to convince me that forcing landlords to sell to their tenants is going to fix the housing shortage? Is that really the best you can propose?

I’m suspicious of peoples claims on here but it definitely makes me doubt that you’re a lawyer. even more than some of the outrageous things you wrote did.

Too funny. 🤣

Night.

commonsense12 · 23/04/2024 03:04

Landlords will always do the most to try and convince themselves that what they are doing is ethical. The truth is, the tenants are second thoughts, and money always comes first!

If you could only own one home, house prices would be more affordable, and a less desirable investment opportunity. This is where the real problem is, something as essential as a home to live in should not be seen as an investment to begin with.

It hilarious, and you could see the venom for the last 15 pages, by pretending to be a reasonable poster, with all the I am a free marketer Tory.

WE could all see through it and the BS of I was being polite and I did not lie, is laughable.

You have been found out.

Well this thread seems to have went off piste somewhat but, after 28 pages the OP and their supporters have done a cracking job of reminding us all why nobody likes landlords.

So if you're wondering why all landlords are frowned upon OP a few moments of self-reflection should make it quite clear.

You take what you want from it.

After being lectured by someone that said they had no issues with LLs, but it was for the good of society and that you could have good LLs people saw through it.

You have no idea what anyone is really like and your post says it all about what people think about LLs, hence the post.

Take care.

So when my neighbours had to move out while they had a big extension done on their house where would they have lived for six months? In a hotel? With their two kids and a dog? I think it was around six months

Itloggedmeoutagain · 23/04/2024 14:04

Just to be clear i mean they moved into a rental. Not that they had a second home

Well as someone that rented years ago and was not a LL, I have more idea than you do, having never been a LL.

Then that's a special use case and has a place in society. A family unit renting long term, because they have no choice, is an issue.

Many people choose to rent, some through having bad credit, and not being able to have a mortgage, some through work or a new relationship.

Not so black and white.

Renting because you have bad credit is not a choice, it's a necessity.

If we compare the average wage to the average house price over the past 100 years, we will see that people used to be able to afford homes on a single income. The only thing that has driven this up is when the minority own a majority of housing, selling for profit.

Again, I agree that renting has its place, but not on as large a scale as it is today.

Daphnis156 · 23/04/2024 15:23

I think the bad reputation of landlords is entirely deserved.

The very word "Landlord" is ridiculous.

But it's hardly a one off is it? This happens all the time. My friend's parents had to move out of their new build due to a fault. Plenty of people rent due to moving with work
none if this could happen if people weren't allowed to own more than one house.

Did modern landlords invent the word- of course not, what a silly thing to say, there are plenty of names that people would disagree with today, I can name a few. Below is where the word comes from. Sorry that its a word that originated from a thousand years ago.
The concept of a landlord may be traced back to the feudal system of manoralism (seignorialism), where a landed estate is owned by a Lord of the Manor (mesne lords), usually members of the lower nobility which came to form the rank of knights in the high medieval period.
