To think that Landlords have a bad name.

NC for this.

Is it just me or are all landlords frowned upon a MN.

We own and rent out 3 properties all our properties are rented out to young families, just under market rate, we allow them to decorate their homes how they like, and if there is any issues or problems they just call us and we sort it out ASAP.

I know that there is some terrible landlords out there, that should be dealt with but there are thousands of other that are decent that follow all the laws and their tenants are very happy.

Hoarding properties is gross no matter how nice you are.

The issue I have is that landlords trip over themselves to say how amazing they are and how they rent out their properties under market rate and blah blah.

STOP pretending you are doing people a favour. You. Are. Doing. It. To. Make. Money.

But... if landlords didn't exist, how would people live somewhere for a few months e.g. at uni? How would people love before they could afford to buy? This is such a weird attitude.

SabreIsMyFave · 20/04/2024 18:23

I wouldn't have been quite so harsh about landlords, but I do agree that they shouldn't exist.

Every single one of them should have a compulsory purchase order on their additional properties (only allowed to keep one to live in,) and they should all be put into the hands of the local authorities - and housing associations - for their social housing stock.

NO-ONE should own more than one property. The compulsory purchase order should pay them what they paid for the property. If they inherited it, they get what it was worth when they inherited it.

Yes yes I know it's a tall order, and a pipedream and so on ... la la la, but in an ideal world, that is what should happen.

So in your opinion should people only have one car, should homes only have one TV.

Thanks I understand what you are saying.

On here if you say that you are a landlord, then you must a slum landlord and exploiting your tenants.

Can you explain how making a profit out of a necessity isn't exploiting someone?

Do you think no one should be allowed to move out of their parents home unless they are lucky enough to be given social housing or they can afford to buy?

have you ever wondered why people can't afford to buy or why social housing is necessary?

Landlords

I’m not denying a problem with housing exists, but it is disingenuous to promote the idea that everyone who wanted to own a house would suddenly be able to buy property wherever they wanted if renting was outlawed. Banning renting would obviously cause a huge difficulty for many people.

Landlords taking advantage of the system on a large scale are part of a wider problem, along with housing benefit and a lack of social housing and other things. Individuals managing one or two rental properties because it’s the best way to provide security for their family’s future according to the way their life dice fell are fine.

Maybe because an exploitative practice?

I've no skin in this particular game, but I do think that the explosion in private landlords has caused a massive block on young people and first time buyers entering the housing market.

Don't pretend it's for altruistic reasons.

Why are landlords scum.

Our tenants can not afford a mortgage or do not want to buy in the area as they are only in the area for work. If no one wanted/needed to rent they would not rent.

Can’t afford a mortgage while being charged the monthly cost of a mortgage in rent, and not being able to save for a deposit on top you mean? 🤣

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/04/2024 18:30

fiddleleaffig · 20/04/2024 17:57

The problem is that by buying 3 properties you don't need, you have taken 3 properties away from those families to buy themselves. Also in buying more than you need has risen the local house prices so not only have you removed the home for the families to buy, you have also priced them out of the local area. You may think you are a great landlord because you let them paint and fix things, but be real here - very, very few families want to rent. Very few people want to rent. They simply have no choice to thanks to the impact of people buying buy-to-lets. It's the economic impact that's incredibly selfish and makes the perma-renter-millennials despise you.

This. Its about the market as a whole.

Or can't afford a mortgage because buy to let landlords have driven house prices up..

Same problem either way!

We are not making money from two of the properties, we just have an asset.

Our rent on all of the properties is cheaper than what a mortgage would be on the houses for the people that live there.

It is not as simple as you make out.

An asset that someone else is paying for. I couldn't sleep at night knowing that I was leeching off people who can't afford their own property.

Absolutely agree! I’ve always said the same. Leeches exploiting the desperate. I understand the market for rentals in certain circumstances but we don’t need as many as we have. My local town has no housing because of greedy landlords charging a fortune to rent and not renting to people on low incomes or benefits, even though that’s against the law now they just use a different excuse

ManchesterBeatrice · 20/04/2024 18:35

This is really interesting, if there were no rental properties then where would students go? (After the first year in halls)

Where would people on contracts go? (Junior doctors for example who move around a lot)

Where would people who prefer to move often go? (I know people like this, they like a regular change of scenery every couple of years)

Where would people who need to temporarily relocate for work go?

Not being goady just curious as to the solutions.

I've used rented property temporarily before, and not sure what I'd do if it wasn't there.

That generally happens on Mumsnet OP
Hardly anyone with sense denies there's good and bad with landlords, tenants and everyone else for that matter, but on here they're often the devil incarnate with no room for nuance at all

StMarieforme · 20/04/2024 18:35

In Japan, they do not see houses as investments. They see them as homes.
That system would stop the unfairness here.
You have 4 houses. I have none (I have had houses but had to sell due to divorce and could not get back on) and my daughter then stands no chance.
How is that ever fair? My rent is more than my LL mortgage. 🤷🏻‍♀️

NO.

I am not after being made to feel good, I am saying that people rent for all sort of reasons and most are happy to rent, yet posters have come on here to just be nasty.

Why do you read some of the responses, so anyone that cant afford a mortgage should be homeless, landlords provide a service, where we live its 10 years on a waiting list for social housing.

Shelter is a necessity. Living in a property of your choice in a location of your choice is not a necessity. Not all rental properties are places where a low wage couple with children expect to live.

How far do you want to take the argument about making profit out of necessity? I’m assuming it doesn’t apply to food, clothing or transportation?
