How often are you complimented on your looks

Gerbil12 · 19/04/2024 21:27

In particular by people you've just met. Have been out with a very attractive friend tonight who has had men fawning over her/complimenting her whilst I was just ignored as usual. I'm probably a 5 but I don't think my physical appearance has ever been complimented by a stranger. Feeling a bit crap. Does this happen to other people?

Fairly regularly. I've lovely hair and people often say I look younger than I am when I say I have kids in their thirties. I had my kids in my early 20s so it's mostly people doing bad maths but I'll take it. I actually look my age but I'm ok with that.

My Mum, husband and my daughters all regularly tell me I'm pretty. I'm not bad looking but I'm definitely nothing special. I just have a nice mum, a nice husband and nice daughters. My sons don't tell me I'm pretty but I love them too! I regularly tell my mum she is great looking (she is) and I'm always telling my kids they are gorgeous (they are). I also tell my husband he is very handsome (he is)

Every day by DH. Every now and then by random strangers, which can be both nice... and weird!

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 20/04/2024 01:47

Never!

KelMc90 · 20/04/2024 01:51

Never, not even from my husband 😂

My youngest son DS6 is the only person who has commented on my looks in the past ten years. But he thinks I'm so beautiful that it "gives him tears in his heart" so I can live with that 🤣

OMG... That is TOO cute! 🥰

Tinymrscollings · 20/04/2024 01:54

Oh god never. I’m nice enough looking, I like myself and I dress well so you’d think I might be in with a shot, but it’s never happened. I think the compliment givers and the compliment welcomers have a radar for each other. I’ve spent my entire life beaming out ‘tell me I’m beautiful and I’ll make it awkward’ vibes. It did used to bother me when I was young, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that I’m an acquired taste. I don’t think that men who go around bars bestowing compliments based on someone’s face and body are usually looking for a project of that nature.

Never, although recently my toddler saw me putting on makeup and told me I looked like "a perfect beautiful clown", if that counts?

😂 Love this!

mjf981 · 20/04/2024 02:51

I used to a bit ( in my 20s). Also, after a very good haircut, I'd notice people doing double takes on the street/in the shopping centre etc. I liked it.

However, i've recently turned 40 and this doesn't happen anymore. At all. I'm invisible. Its a bit depressing tbh.

PoppyCherryDog · 20/04/2024 02:55

Never! I definitely don’t want comments from strangers and I’d be freaked out if I did

bradpittsbathwater · 20/04/2024 03:35

Fairly often, more from women than men. I'm 39 and I'd say above average attractiveness. It can be a bit inappropriate coming from men sometimes. I get complimented more on what I'm wearing than looks as such by men if it happens. I don't really need the external validation though so I can take it or leave it.

JennyWren87 · 20/04/2024 04:14

Very rarely. Sometimes on my skin but it's been a while 😄

TammyJones · 20/04/2024 04:57

Jokl · 19/04/2024 21:32

Sometimes. Less now than, say, 8-10 years ago when I was a 20 year old single woman out in clubs and bars all the time. I’m now married and barely go out so of course the ‘opportunity’ for compliments is much less. My husband tells me I’m gorgeous so, y’know, that means the most to me 🙃

Came on to to say my dh does most days ( and I tell myself when I pass a mirror) Grin

TheExclusiveSandwich · 20/04/2024 05:11

Daily

hopscotcher · 20/04/2024 05:12

Lol, never, and certainly not by strangers. A bit more so recently by friends since I lost quite a lot of weight, but those tend to be supportive rather than 'gosh aren't you beautiful' type comments!

BarbsAllotment · 20/04/2024 06:04

FrannieGallops · 19/04/2024 21:32

Fairly often, but I find it quite annoying and it’s often patronising.

🙄

ineedtostopbeingdramaticfirst · 20/04/2024 06:30

Never in my teens, a lot in my twenties/early thirties. Now I'm in my forties with a middle age spread I'm basically invisible.

Anyotherdude · 20/04/2024 06:31

Every time I put on a nice dress and some makeup - normally by other women and always by DH…

EndoEnd · 20/04/2024 06:36

On occasion, but not often at all. I get more compliments on my clothes/hair 🤷🏻‍♀️
My DH compliments me often though, so it's no bother to me 😊
If it makes you feel any better OP, my friend of many many years is very attractive and it happens to her constantly. She absolutely hates it, and as a result has struggled with her self worth. So it's not always positive.

BoobyDazzler · 20/04/2024 06:40

frequently, mostly women but occasionally men.

I’m decidedly average looking and a bit of a scruff, but I have a massive smile which people seem drawn to.

Tontostitis · 20/04/2024 06:40

When I was younger it happened all the time now I'm 60 odd I still get it very occasionally from strangers, daily from my husband.

poll00 · 20/04/2024 07:06

Never. I once went to a photography workshop and we were asked to compliment the person next to us. I got 'ummm, err, you have really good posture'. Savage!

People do often compliment me on my clothes though. But my skin, hair, actual looks? Never.

I like how I look, though. People smile at me lots so I can't be too ugly, ha.

HeraSyndulla · 20/04/2024 07:18

Fairly frequently by both men and women. I’m six foot, scandi blonde with piercing blue eyes and that seems to attract attention. I did some modelling in my student days and I was a “ background artist “ at Pinewood but it was more for a laugh than anything else.

underscorer · 20/04/2024 07:18

Never. I've been told I'm ugly by strangers (and friends), though.

Jennyjojo5 · 20/04/2024 07:19

IMustDoMoreExercise · 19/04/2024 21:51

I don't think that I have ever been.

I remember once that I went shopping with a very attractive friend. Men were just staring at her all the time.

But I am very happily married and she is single and can't seem to stay in a relationship, so I know whose life I would rather have.

What’s your marital status/her being single got to do with anything? Fab that you’re happily married, but it doesn’t make you a better person than she is/have a better life than she does , which is what you’re implying !

underscorer · 20/04/2024 07:21

CinnamonWhirls · 19/04/2024 21:59

Thank you @Miloandfreddy but unfortunately I really am.
Massive nose, thin lips, flat chested. Extremely thin hair. I could go on and on.

I'm the same. It's a bit rubbish, isn't it? Like mostly it's ok but sometimes, it hits you.
