I think it's a great idea and would support it, because one of the things I was most upset about when this stupid fucking country voted for Brexit was the way it would prevent my DC from having the same opportunities for living and working in Europe that I did.

Sure, it would be great to have it back for everyone, but we had it and we threw it away - or rather 17.4 million people out of a total of 68 million threw it away for the rest of us.

Pozz · 19/04/2024 07:44

I'd love to see opportunities for young people to do what I did myself at that age, travelling and working in Europe.

KrisAkabusi · 19/04/2024 07:57

Downing Street says it prefers country-by-country deals to an agreement that would apply across all 27 member states

Nearly 50 years as a member and years after the Brexit vote, the UK government still hasn't realised that you negotiate with the EU as a whole and not with individual countries!

ringoffiire · 19/04/2024 07:58

Yes I support it but I always have, I didn't want Brexit in the first place.

Lancrelady80 · 19/04/2024 08:05

it would be much better if we just restored freedom of movement for everyone.

I agree with this. It just seems to me that the freedom of movement for 18-30 only is a very cynical attempt to seduce the people that we need to stay. Brexit was a colossal mess up, as many people predicted. We shouldn't be in a state where we're scared of having young people because they'll see things might well be better in other countries, but that's what Brexit + far too many years of Consetvative government have done. That's where we are. Somehow we need to turn things around and for that we need the bright and able young people to be here. If they really want to go and travel and work abroad then they will, this isn't East Germany, we're not going to force them to stay.

I agree it's not fair, and my heart wants to say "yes! Great thing!" But it's far from ideal for many, many reasons and I don't think we should make it easier to lose people we need.

Either we all have free movement again, or we don't, is my opinion.

Ohnoitsfinallyhappened · 19/04/2024 08:06

Absolutely. We have ended up with a two tier system - anybody who can gets a European passport and freedom of movement to work and live in the EU - the rest (including my children) are left with only opportunities in the UK or having to go further afield (my son went to Canada for the summer instead of Spain like his friends with European passports.)

People weren’t tricked and lied to, that’s giving them an easy out. They were seduced which is different. Everyone had access to the same information, however, the Leavers wanted to hear what they were being told even though it made no sense.

I agree. They were told again and again what would happen but chose to believe known liars Johnson and Farage and their ' project fear'. And Give eith his ' what fo exoerts know?' They all heard about potential medicine shortages, the risk to UK farming of lower quality US and Australian meat being imported, skills shortages trading problems etc etc but chose to say 'la la la immigration' even when legal immigration from outside the EU, which the government could always control was higher. They chose to do this.

Yes, I would definitely support this. I'm still so cross that these rights were taken away from our young people.

But it would be much better if we just restored freedom of movement for everyone.

Absolutely

Midnightrunners · 19/04/2024 08:11

We've left the EU. This is just some sort of manipulation.

cognito · 19/04/2024 08:11

Yes, would definitely support this. Obviously, we need to rejoin EU anyway.

SnapdragonToadflax · 19/04/2024 08:11

I would strongly support in the hope it would lead to rejoining within a generation. It's already a failed experiment (as anyone with half a brain knew it would be).

crumpet · 19/04/2024 08:11

Would support it 100%. Amongst many things it was one of the biggest problems I had with Brexit - removing from my children the opportunities that I had had.

Medschoolmum · 19/04/2024 08:13

Midnightrunners · 19/04/2024 08:11

Manipulation?

Surely it's just an attempt to repair at least a little bit of the damage?

SkyBloo · 19/04/2024 08:13

No.

All this would mean is our government recruiting nurses/careworkers/teacher from countries with lower wages (and costs of living) to keep pay down here.

If people are actually needed for a job in an another country, its not usually difficult for them to get a visa to work there.

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/04/2024 08:14

would absolutely support as it could benefit my currently young children and the lack of opportunities for them that I had is my biggest beef with Brexit

soupfiend · 19/04/2024 08:16

I sort of do support it, but dont support it. It discriminates against me due to my age.

However, I too would vote for any party who would full on fight to rejoin the EU, we would be at far far disadvantaged terms than previously but nevertheless it would be better than this shit show.

KimberleyClark · 19/04/2024 08:18

Whenwillitgetwarm · 19/04/2024 06:58

I’d support it. I want my kids to have more options. This freedom should apply to anyone who was below voting age at the time of the 2016 referendum, so 26 years of age and below.

Its unfair to trap young people here in order for them to pay for pensions and social care for older people who voted to take their rights away and damaged the economy.

Please don't tar all older people with the same brush. I didn't vote for Brrexit and neither did any of my friends.

Sooty20235 · 19/04/2024 08:19

I also feel a bit pissed that it’s only for young people. I’m young enough to have a massive student loan and unaffordable housing, but apparently too old to escape and pay taxes somewhere better. Urgh.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 19/04/2024 08:20

I fully support this. I don’t think the UK even needs to agree or disagree, if the EU makes it policy then it’s done. What’s bad about giving young people access to a much bigger pool of opportunities? Literally nothing, that’s what. We should all have it.

If the government want to do a reciprocal deal for individual likeminded countries such as French, German kids then why not. As long as they track who is in the country this time.

Not keen on FOM for all. The country is overrun as it is. Imagine the inhabitants of 27 countries being allowed to settle here again with all the issues we have with housing?

The UK has become the world's fourth largest exporter due to a boost in services. It is now only behind China, the US and Germany in the exporter rankings, having overtaken France, the Netherlands and Japan, according to statistics from the UN Conference on Trade and Development.

We couldn't have done that while being a member of the EU, they wouldn't have allowed it which is why they were so bitter, that and losing their cash cow. But then democracy is a relatively new thing to the Europeans.

I mean I'm not sure where you have been living for 8 years, but we've been trawling our way through some of the poorest countries in the world to poach their much needed medical staff. Any British person with any kind of medical qualification will be able to walk into Canada/Australia etc, and are doing so in their droves.

"But then democracy is a relatively new thing to the Europeans."

Leaving aside your grasp on where democracy oroginated, you have a literal god king.

I don't know what millennium you are living in but it wasn't that long ago that large parts of Europe were fascist dictatorships ( Spain, Germany and Italy ) and virtually all of eastern Europe was a communist dictatorship, even Portugal was a form of dictatorship until 1974.

That democracy presides in western Europe at all is down to the UK, the commonwealth and the USA.
