If you needed extra money

....an extra £100 per week

You both work full time

Can't cut anything back at all (fine tooth comb through the budget has already been done)

Not eligible for any benefits even with low wages and high childcare costs.

What would you do? I've had 2nd jobs before, but now we have 2 kids under 6 and not much support.

Online jobs? Surveys
mystery shopping
tutoring?
skills
swaps
ironing at home

IgnoranceNotOk · 18/04/2024 20:17

Crikey OP that’s a lot that’s needed a month.

Can you list all your bills to see if anyone on here can cut it more?

Have you looked at benefits calculators and made sure you are claiming for childcare from tax free childcare etc.

Why is it suddenly that you need so much more a month?

DeeCeeCherry · 18/04/2024 20:18

1 of you become SAHP so you don't have childcare costs. Or 1 of you get a 2nd job.

Stompythedinosaur · 18/04/2024 20:20

I used to have to pick up a certain number of overtime shifts a month to make ends meet, I guess that isn't an option with your work?

If not, I'd go for a second job, maybe one weekend day.

Beatrixslobber · 18/04/2024 20:21

Can you increase your hours? Obviously depends on what you do.

Realistically babysitting/ dog walking/ selling everything that you own etc won’t bring in an extra £100 a week.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 18/04/2024 20:21

How can you be £400 short a month? What is going on with our outgoings ?

ohfourfoxache · 18/04/2024 20:22

Would a different job be a viable option?

AgnesXNitt · 18/04/2024 20:22

I would and have worked one night shift (Saturday night) in a supermarket. After tax its close enough to the £100 a week (I think it was £85 when I did it but it may be more now). It's shit, you'll have no social life and will have to make do with a nap on Saturday evening after kids are in bed and Sunday morning but if you're on your bones financially it's an option. In the meantime look for an alternative fulltime job that pays £3-4 an hour more. You have my sympathy, this too shall pass!

DowntonCrabby · 18/04/2024 20:25

I assume you are claiming child benefit, just not classing it as “benefits”?
If not you’ll be entitled on low wages.

BananaLambo · 18/04/2024 20:25

Delivery driver, Saturday job, overtime, mowing lawns, apply for better paid jobs/promotion, ask for a pay rise, go to Citizens advice to check about benefits, swap out meat for lentils/chickpeas, no alcohol.

RomeoRivers · 18/04/2024 20:26

Push for promotion?

Realistically something else in your budget has to go, without showing us you can’t be sure you haven’t missed anything.

I earn quite a bit each month doing online surveys. Swagbucks are my favourite as I get £10 every 2-3 days - in addition to survey income, you get free products to trial, loads of tops up at the end of the month for all the days you hit your daily goal and then they give you extra points when you hit points levels called Swag Ups. You get money for searching the internet and they have competitions where you are part of a team too. When you join and earn 300 points in the first 30 days, they give you a 300 bonus.

Second favourite: You Gov as you never screen out :

I get £50 every 6-8 weeks.

Third Favourite:
Viewbank - they are currently running an incentive of £2.50 just for joining.

You won't make tons on this panel every week but it takes only about 30 seconds a day to answer two questions ( 12p) and about once a week you get a survey which is between 50p-£1 for 5-10 minutes.
Every few weeks you get a bigger task which is usually £5.

As I always say when I recommend panels this is not money for zero effort. You have to put a bit of effort in but they can be done in front of the TV, on public transport , at lunch on a work day etc. and it's well worth it for me.
Good luck with it.

Realistically it’s either find new jobs that pay more or take a second job. Nowhere else for the money to come from 🤷🏻‍♀️

BusyCM · 18/04/2024 20:28

Can you tell us more about the low wages, high childcare and not eligible for benefits?

Are you using tax free childcare? Are you using any funded hours?

SkyBloo · 18/04/2024 20:31

Babysit friday and saturday nights while DH stayed home with our kids. Or shifts in a pub same time.

I'm an accountant so maybe offer some accounting services to a couple of small local businesses.

Waffleson · 18/04/2024 20:31

You need to cut your outgoings by extending your mortgage or moving somewhere cheaper. Do your wages exceed childcare by much?

Mangobrango · 18/04/2024 20:32

Cut childcare costs by working different hours to your partner. I guess this depends on if night job + childcare saving > day job - childcare.

Yoyooo · 18/04/2024 20:32

My husband works a full time job then goes to a evening job in a restaurant 4 times a week. It brings in a extra £200 a week.

We also have 2 young children. We're tired but we're comfortable money wise because of it and spend quality time together at the weekends.

Mangobrango · 18/04/2024 20:33

Or only fans 🤷‍♀️

Fancybed · 18/04/2024 20:33

Shirt term have a clear out and ebay/vinted. Longer term look for different work.

SkyBloo · 18/04/2024 20:33

Realistically babysitting/ dog walking/ selling everything that you own etc won’t bring in an extra £100 a week.

Where i live babysitters are £12.50 an hour. 4 hours twice a week and you are sorted.

Dacadactyl · 18/04/2024 20:33

I'd get a second job. They're always recruiting carers.

You get £50 from you gov every 6-8 weeks?! Omg it takes me about two years and I fill in their surveys pretty often...

mrsm43s · 18/04/2024 20:34

Second job, evenings and weekends . Other parents does childcare. With MW at £11+, you'd only need to work 4-5 hours each a week to make £100/week.

Or one of you ( but preferably both) goes for a promotion either internally or externally.

PiggyPokkyFool · 18/04/2024 20:39

Hi @littleteapot86 I do.
As well as the surveys there are loads of ways to earn on there - look under the safe tab when you are signed in and you can link so many things these days and each gives you revolving money as you grant and re-grant access - bank accounts/netflix/apple TV/amazon/browsing history plus YouGov Pulse.
Any questions ask and I'll screenshot mine.
