If you needed extra money

....an extra £100 per week

You both work full time

Can't cut anything back at all (fine tooth comb through the budget has already been done)

Not eligible for any benefits even with low wages and high childcare costs.

What would you do? I've had 2nd jobs before, but now we have 2 kids under 6 and not much support.

A friend of mine works full time during the week and does deliveries for a Chinese on the weekend that brings in roughly £80 a night plus petrol money

coxesorangepippin · 18/04/2024 20:41

What do you actually need the money for?

Perfectpots · 18/04/2024 20:41

Any way you can change your hours to reduce the Childcare costs?

littleteapot86 · 18/04/2024 20:44

PiggyPokkyFool · 18/04/2024 20:39

Hi @littleteapot86 I do.
As well as the surveys there are loads of ways to earn on there - look under the safe tab when you are signed in and you can link so many things these days and each gives you revolving money as you grant and re-grant access - bank accounts/netflix/apple TV/amazon/browsing history plus YouGov Pulse.
Any questions ask and I'll screenshot mine.

Aw amazing, thank you!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/04/2024 20:45

I’d apply for a new job- but appreciate in the private sector.
if no possibility of that I’d have to look at outgoings

anonhop · 18/04/2024 20:48

If either of you have educational qualifications, try tutoring?
Could do £20-40/ hour depending on subject & level, so wouldn't need to work too many extra hours to do it?
Can be online or in person? + most want evenings or weekends

Love51 · 18/04/2024 20:48

Is this going to be every month for the foreseeable? Honestly I'd consider moving somewhere cheaper if at all possible. And look for a different job. You both work full time with small kids, it would be unsustainable to keep up a side hustle for ever. Instead of tinkering I'd look for a big wholesale change. It may not be an option for you but id definitely explore it as the current set up isn't working for your family.

TheNinny · 18/04/2024 20:48

basically an extra job - work overtime shifts at weekend if possible and if partner is home, one person delivers food/uber late nights/weekends, possibly babysit/childcare for friends/family at weekend or evenings, sell stuff, do cleaning/ironing on side (unsure of what this earns)

Or alter shifts/condensed hours some days to cut childcare on others, car share to cut fuel costs if commute involves a car, rent out driveway if you live near a paid parking work centre, lodger, dog walking/pet sitting, grass cut/garden for neighbours, taxi, or night carer a few times a week (I see this advertised privately on local pages sometimes)

FIFIBEBE · 18/04/2024 20:50

Have you had a look at Vinted? I found that the selling categories have expanded quite a bit. Today I sold golf balls, tennis balls, a camera bag and a super soaker water pistol. Unless you live in a shop, I don't think you would make £100 extra per week but it could help in conjunction with other methods.

Gcsunnyside23 · 18/04/2024 20:51

Is childcare the issue? Can you downsize your home, downgrade your car?

littleteapot86 · 18/04/2024 20:52

I meant to ask can you do this through the you gov app or only on the website?

I don't know @littleteapot86 as I don't have the app.
I do everything on the website.

Always wondered how does a delivery driver make that much money?
The delivery charge by restaurants isn't that much?

ByUmberViewer · 18/04/2024 20:59

Easiest way to get more money is to ask for a pay rise.

When was the last time you had a pay increase?

TheSnowyOwl · 18/04/2024 21:03

Can you and your partner compress your hours so you each work longer for four days but have an extra week day off? That could save you two days of childcare.

Otherwise go down to one car? No cars?

Beetlewings · 18/04/2024 21:15

Bar job or hospitality. You can each do shifts alternate evenings, while the other looks after the kids, hard but good temporary work

OhYoko · 18/04/2024 21:17

Online tutoring. Money for old rope if you have an A Level in a subject.

Babyroobs · 18/04/2024 21:19

Can you condense any working days, so five into four longer days to save on childcare?

Chasingsquirrels · 18/04/2024 21:22

£50 every 6-8 weeks staggered me, I also get £50 about every 2 years - in fact having read this I've looked on the app for the things the poster mentioned (and can't find anything, and if I try to log in on the website it takes me to the app) but did find a statistics page which pretty much confirms that it's been approx every 2 years (just under 45,000 points in just under 19 years).
My stats for March show me earning more than average and in the top 7% - just about that it shows I earned 395 points, which would take me a year to get to 5,000 for £50.

I shall look on the computer!

Sell things
Cut back on pension payments
Move to interest only mortgage
Extend the length of the mortgage
Rent out a room or a parking space

I have a garden so I pot up self seeded plants and bring them on, until they are large enough to sell at table top sales. I home-make jams from free fruit & sell that too. It would be hard work to make £100 a month, but most of the work could be done from home. And it would be cash in hand.

As a student I worked as a barmaid - all hours. That's the easiest and most immediate money.

grinandslothit · 18/04/2024 21:28

As for a pay raise work on getting a new job that pays more

PiggyPokkyFool · 18/04/2024 21:49

Here's a screenshot for anyone interested of just some of the things you can do.

If you needed extra money
PiggyPokkyFool · 18/04/2024 21:52

And here are my finance points from the last time I shared.
It's 1700 points and I can share again in 2 weeks and get them all again.
you need to click on the white square to see them all.

TabbyMcTabster · 18/04/2024 21:54

@PiggyPokkyFool even doing that, are you actually sure it's £50 every 6 or so weeks?!

I don't think that's correct. It's deliberately set so they don't pay out very much very often!

butterfliesandrainbows2022 · 18/04/2024 21:56

yeah I'm in the top 1% of yougov members & even I only get about £100 a Year from it. Think the person is slightly exaggerating. Plus not mentioning that using their referral links gives them money. Yougov for example for all that click soon as you do 6 surveys they'll get £2 for nothing
