....an extra £100 per week

You both work full time

Can't cut anything back at all (fine tooth comb through the budget has already been done)

Not eligible for any benefits even with low wages and high childcare costs.

What would you do? I've had 2nd jobs before, but now we have 2 kids under 6 and not much support.

Could you temporarily extend the length of your mortgage?

We've gone interest only for a few months but it is very temporary. I'll enquire about the term thanks.

Absolutely not worse when they are teenagers as they don't require childcare all the time or even in the holidays as they do before and throughout primary.
Also they are perfectly capable from 14 or 15 in earning their own money which is something I strongly encouraged as it taught my DC the value of every pound. You are in the trenches financially now and it will get better.

Thank you 😊

I've heard this mentioned a lot before on mumsnet I have even googled and I still can't work out what it is/how it works! Would love to know more if its lucrative.

Hi I was going to suggest matched betting, have a look at out played or odds monkey both have guides & free trials. I did loads of research, was really nervous but decided to try it end of jan. I had a low bankroll of £40 to start, I’ve made just over. £2100 so far it’s definitely worth doing - I wish I’d done it sooner tbh!

mitogoshi · 29/04/2024 21:54

Care work as weekend bank staff can be lucrative, £15 an hour or more, no permanent contract so you can just do it as and when. Overnight Friday to Saturday could earn you what you need

JugglingMummyof2 · 30/04/2024 18:18

Apologies for the delay in responding @Whatwillitbenext I had to check with my friend. She said Odds monkey is the best place to start.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 18/04/2024 20:21

How can you be £400 short a month? What is going on with our outgoings ?

Can you honestly not imagine a reason? Remortgage rate doubled? Energy fix ended? Illness? Increased childcare costs? Redundancy? Hours cut at work? New job that requires train fare / petrol?

shall I go on?

OP evening work?

hope things get easier for you soon.

PiggyPokkyFool · 06/05/2024 17:58

For any YouGov members on here that couldn't cash out their £50 as the bank transfer system was down, it's now working again.

BottomPinchingAunt · 10/05/2024 20:51

Hope things are going well for you @Whatwillitbenext
Have you managed to make the £100 a week or at least some of it?

I remember those lean years well and it will get easier if you can stop the wheels falling off in the coming months.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. I've done nothing yet, sort of buried my head if I'm honest. I'm still thinking of doing care 2 nights a week but husband isn't keen 😩

😂😂I had exactly the same from DH initially when I was spending Friday and Saturday nights babysitting after a long week for both of us. However, he soon saw the logic when we went from just keeping our heads above water to managing to save a bit towards a much needed holiday.
Short term pain for long term gain.

Wouldn't it be better for you both to do 1 evening per week (or 3 per fortnight / 5 per month maybe), especially as you have already suffered from burnout, so spreading the burden?

Yeah maybe 2 for me and 1 for him haha probably would need to be that. I've decided to properly look into it this week. Thank you x

If anyone is on swagbucks, there's a new Swago coming up:

WithACatLikeTread · 21/06/2024 17:47

The amount of spam calls I have received since trying swagbucks is stupid. Personally I would avoid.

PiggyPokkyFool · 21/06/2024 18:20

Spam calls on your mobile? I rarely get spam calls and certainly no more since i joined Swagbucks. In fact I never heard from Swagbucks themselves via text. Do you have this box deselected on the preferences page?

So to answer some questions this would be for around 1 year until my son turns 3 and we get 30 free hours

We have no car finance

We can't change hours, I already work compressed and so does my husband so we have a weekday off each for childcare.

I'm up for a 2nd job, it's heartening to think I could maybe just work 1 evening a week and take home £100 a week - is that really right? Someone mentioned up thread about it. I could do caring, i did that once before.

I got made redundant from my highish paying job (£55k) had mental health issues, got diagnosed with ADHD and I'm now on £30k with some debt to repay. We paid the redundancy money off our large mortgage to bring that down but failed to think properly about having a little fund put by since childcare costs and food costs are so high. Childcare was £1100 per month for 4 days then we reduced to 3 days which was £800 per month and has now gone down to £550 thanks to some free hours - in a year it'll go down to £180 per month.

The £100 a week is so we can live but also have some money for a few treats and fun. I'm happy to work doubly hard for that.

We earn £60k between us with a large mortgage still, debt repayments which have been consolidated as best as possible (thanks Martin lewis) but only have around £50 a month left when everything is paid which is just not enough.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far.

I'm not that moral really, if I could find a way into casual dealing I probably would 🤣

Edited

Do you know you can get 15 free hours from age 2? Mine will get this from September, we'll have to pay for his meals and they've told me they'll stretch it through the full year so it's the same amount every week. It's not going to save us much more than £35 a week I reckon but it will help us massively l.
I second the online surveys! I must be signed up to at least 15 companies, I save up all the rewards to use towards Christmas presents.

Thank you yes he got the 15 free hours from April 2024 so we're using them.

Little update - I have 3 job interviews over the next 2 weeks for essentially what I do now (maybe on a slightly bigger scale and slightly more responsibility but no management of others) and all the jobs are between £45k-£55k remote. Fingers crossed for me I can get one! And no risk of burnout as its very similar to what I do now.

I would get out with hand written leaflets offering to do an hour of gardening for people, using their own mowers and tools. I would love someone/a couple who want to spend an hour in my garden strimming and mowing and cutting back. I think things like cleaning out people's cars are things teenagers used to love doing in the street for money and now I can't even get a builder to turn up to quote to fix the roof!
