....an extra £100 per week

You both work full time

Can't cut anything back at all (fine tooth comb through the budget has already been done)

Not eligible for any benefits even with low wages and high childcare costs.

What would you do? I've had 2nd jobs before, but now we have 2 kids under 6 and not much support.

Won't be nothing like the £100 a week but have you looked into bank account switching? Some providers give welcome bonuses that might be a couple of hundred without much effort?

Whatwillitbenext · 10/08/2024 13:57

To update this, I applied hard and have got a new job starting in a couple of weeks worth an extra £900 per month 🥳 so happy.

You get £50 from you gov every 6-8 weeks?! Omg it takes me about two years and I fill in their surveys pretty often...

I’ve never had a 🫘 😆

So to answer some questions this would be for around 1 year until my son turns 3 and we get 30 free hours

We have no car finance

We can't change hours, I already work compressed and so does my husband so we have a weekday off each for childcare.

I'm up for a 2nd job, it's heartening to think I could maybe just work 1 evening a week and take home £100 a week - is that really right? Someone mentioned up thread about it. I could do caring, i did that once before.

I got made redundant from my highish paying job (£55k) had mental health issues, got diagnosed with ADHD and I'm now on £30k with some debt to repay. We paid the redundancy money off our large mortgage to bring that down but failed to think properly about having a little fund put by since childcare costs and food costs are so high. Childcare was £1100 per month for 4 days then we reduced to 3 days which was £800 per month and has now gone down to £550 thanks to some free hours - in a year it'll go down to £180 per month.

The £100 a week is so we can live but also have some money for a few treats and fun. I'm happy to work doubly hard for that.

We earn £60k between us with a large mortgage still, debt repayments which have been consolidated as best as possible (thanks Martin lewis) but only have around £50 a month left when everything is paid which is just not enough.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far.

I'm not that moral really, if I could find a way into casual dealing I probably would 🤣

Edited

Have you worked out the 30 hours funded nursery place correctly? Many parents think they can send their child for 30 hours a week for free and that's not how it works.

If your child is attending all year round, it works out at 22.5 hours a week as 30 hours applies to term time only. You still pay for hours above those 22.5 hours.

The amount of parents who get this wrong and argue about it is mindblowing

I just wanted to come back and update again. I got the new job and then saw another job online which sounded even better, i applied without too much thought into it and had a quick interview and got the job. I'm now over £1200 per month better off than when I typed up this initial post. Once my son's nursery fees go down with some more free hours come April 2025 I'll be over £1500 per month better off. Thank you all for your kind words, I'm so glad I managed to push myself to get a better (but not too taxing!) Job and more money for my family. You all helped with that too.

Hi op Congrats. I'm in a similar boat, Redundancy wise. Did you find the lower paid role helped with ADHD burnout recovery? Are you essentially still in same field you were in before Redundancy?

My husband works a full time job then goes to a evening job in a restaurant 4 times a week. It brings in a extra £200 a week.

We also have 2 young children. We're tired but we're comfortable money wise because of it and spend quality time together at the weekends.

I think this or bar shifts in the evening is your best option. It won't be forever as childcare is less once kids in school.

itsmylife7 · 18/10/2024 01:09

The first update was great.

The second update is amazing.

very pleased for you.

Content writing and editing. I have three DC at home and write whenever I get 10 minutes. I've been doing it for years now and have regular places I write for each week/month. I work about five hours per week in short bursts and earn around £150 per week.
