To be annoyed I was accused of recording in cinema

Yes I was my phone for a short while as I had received an important email. I think if most of been when they came in to do the checks as she looked toward me then the team leader came in and told me to put my phone away. Aibu to think surely they can tell the difference between a person using their phone and recording and it’s a pretty big to accuse someone of it

You should’ve been rightly accused of being a massive pain and totally selfish.

Phones are one of the main reasons I don’t go to the cinema anymore. Insufferable phone addicted cretins who can’t cope for 5 mins without blasting a bright phone screen into the dark and distracting everybody else from a film they’ve paid an arm and a leg to see.

‘Important email’ my arse.

I’m quite confused, how is that obnoxious behaviour? You do realise that someone being on their phone could literally mean picking it up to check the time then immediately putting it back down, it doesn’t mean speaking to someone? Plus you can dim the light on your screen all the way to minimum. Struggling to understand what the joke is, unless you’re not tech literate.

Struggling to understand how you're so socially illiterate...

Cheshiresun · 17/04/2024 21:03

At our cinema, one of the big brands, they always have an advert at the end of the ads saying that have special technology that can tell if someone is recording the film.

So, obviously that is not true, if in your case their "technology" hasn't been able to tell the difference between someone recording the movie or using/looking at their phone.

OP was just told off for using her phone...not recording with it.

And rightly so.

It’s rude to use your phone during the ads and trailers as well.

I want to watch those - if you don’t, go outside to play with your phone please

Oh I agree and I would never do it, but I'll bear it if someone must check them during the pre film bits.
Cinema is an expensive treat these days and it's rude for one person to take away from it for sure.

Off-topic, but I keep misreading your username as strugglingsodomyfest

I don’t know what this says about me.

Edited

I had to read that a few times to work it out, and then I was 😂

I like festivals but I'm not sure I'd want to attend that one...

DottyLottieLou · 19/04/2024 15:48

Nope, you were in the wrong.

Sparklesocks · 19/04/2024 15:51

So many adults seem to treat the cinema like their living room these days. Nobody wants to see the light of your phone while they’re trying to watch a film. If sitting without your phone for 2-3 hours is too much of a struggle for you then stay home and watch Netflix.

bumbumbumbum · 19/04/2024 15:56

We always sit on the first row so no problems with other peoples phones.

Maddy70 · 19/04/2024 16:14

The light from a phone is distracting for others. Phones should not be used in a cinema

beanii · 19/04/2024 16:15

Ahhhh you're one of those people who think rules don't apply to you.

Phones are supposed to be turned off.

As a paying customer there's nothing more annoying than selfish people.

If you REALLY can't do without your phone for a couple of hours, pop out.

FoxyLocksie · 19/04/2024 16:16

TippledPink · 16/04/2024 23:25

You should leave the theatre if you want to check your phone. It ruins the film for everyone else having to see your phone lit up. So entitled.

I agree.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 19/04/2024 16:19

When I'm king of the world, anybody who uses their phone in places they shouldn't be used (including the cinema) will be banned from such establishments for life.

There is nothing that important that you can't not look at your phone for a few hours but can go to the cinema.

Snugglemonkey · 19/04/2024 16:22

Never mind telling you off, they should have kicked you out.

zingally · 19/04/2024 16:53

You shouldn't have been on your phone. It's distracting and very rude to other patrons.
You clearly were on it for a while, if the person who spotted you had time to go out and get a supervisor in.
YABU.

Mrttyl · 19/04/2024 18:19

Did you not realise that using your phone in a cinema is a bit like farting in a lift. Some people do it but most people try to control the urge until they are out.

Otherstories2002 · 19/04/2024 18:55

You know to avoid this? Do not use your phone.

It is not their job to make that judgement. You should not be on your phone.

LanaL · 19/04/2024 18:57

It’s just a rule you have to abide by . They can’t tell if you’re recording so it’s just a blanket rule .

it’s annoying - I regularly take my children to films that bore the hell out of me and would love to go on my phone , but it’s rude and it’s distracting for others who have paid money to be there .

Next time maybe just turn your brightness down completely and do it sneakier !

Thirstysue · 19/04/2024 19:05

No, it's anti social, the light from your screen no matter low dimmed and hidden is a massive distraction and it's rude. I

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 19/04/2024 19:07

There's no excuse to be on your phone in the cinema. Totally ignorant.

YABVU.

Noodles1234 · 19/04/2024 21:01

I find it quite distracting when people look at their phone in the cinema, even with the brightness on lowest setting. It ‘pinks’ in the corner of your eye and really distracts and off putting. I imagine it’s more others may have felt this, socially I’d say it’s quite annoying and rude. If urgent id recommend to pop outside the auditorium to do anything then return after.

Lupuswarriors · 21/04/2024 08:50

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 17/04/2024 18:36

They do still come in and check
And I've not seen screens publically broadcast the audience 🤣

I bet after sating this you'll notice them next time you're in the cinema. I'm often standing waiting for people watching the screens with the folk inside. Easily amused.

There definitely isn't at our local
You would be able to see them

I also think the cinema needs to alert you to the fact they're broadcasting you to all and sundry!

StMarieforme · 21/04/2024 10:55

OP does not describe being accused of anything in the post, only in the title.
Dramatics.
Phones in cinemas are awful. The glare is disctracting. It's plain rude.
YABU OP.

JoeLovesGina · 21/04/2024 11:10

I hope you realise now that having your phone out for any reason in a cinema is bloody annoying for everyone.

If your email was that important you should have left the auditorium or not gone to the cinema in the first place.

People like you are why I don't bother going to see films any more.
