To be annoyed I was accused of recording in cinema

Yes I was my phone for a short while as I had received an important email. I think if most of been when they came in to do the checks as she looked toward me then the team leader came in and told me to put my phone away. Aibu to think surely they can tell the difference between a person using their phone and recording and it’s a pretty big to accuse someone of it

I hate it when people use their phone once the film has started. I told someone off on the weekend as it was so distracting. They make announcements beforehand so unless you’ve got your finger on the nuclear button or expecting a life or death call (and then why would you be there) just sit back and relax as Idris says (or at least leave the room if absolutely necessary).

Ariela · 17/04/2024 12:59

You could have got an aisle seat, set your phone to vibrate, left quietly, read email at back of cinema, actioned it, returned quietly to seat to give less disturbance to those around you than the light from your phone would have given.

oooo there's a special circle of hell reserved for people who use their phones in cinemas. It is such entitled, wankerish behaviour.

Yes, there is. It's right next to the people eating crisps in the theatre...

Or nachos. Why can't people eat before they go to the cinema?

Lupuswarriors · 17/04/2024 16:58

They don't need to come in and check anymore. They've these special cameras that show up nught vision which are usually displayed publicly outside the screens in the hall and they can see from there when a light from a phone is on etc or if something is up.
you wouldn't even know if you had an email if your phone was in your bag on silent. You're there to watch a film....and the peoppe around you didnt pay money to see a film to have a mobile light glaring. Take your phone outside outside the screening area.

Off-topic, but I keep misreading your username as strugglingsodomyfest

I don’t know what this says about me.

Ffs keep you phone if your bag! Going to the cinema is an expensive treat to a lot of people, especially these days and I'd be pretty peeved if I could spy a phone light in my peripheral after paying who knows how much to see a movie as a treat for myself. You are an adult so either time cinema trips when you aren't expecting important communications or step outside if you must!!

Zingy123 · 17/04/2024 17:46

YABVVVU your phone should be on your bag. People like you ruin the cinema as your bright light shines everywhere. Utterly selfish.

Mlb123 · 17/04/2024 17:57

How over the top posters are saying the op shouldn't have gone to the cinema if they were expecting an important email and also saying she should have been thrown out and claiming it's incredible distracting to others the lighting up of the phone screen. I do think the op has overreacted a little , but she clearly felt belittled and told off and then she came to aibu and of course rather than getting any understanding she got told off , but she should expect that because that's what Aibu is mostly about in my opinion . It's the place people come wanting to be harshly judged for whatever reason whether that be as they are feeling truly worried about something or they are wanting to revel in feeling like a victim of harsh words. I think the op would have had to have had the phone pointing at screen in order to be accused of recording because checking emails would normally be with the phone pointing down when sitting down reading. So if she was accused of recording then they had to have suspected she was recording x

XenoBitch · 17/04/2024 18:11

Were you actually accused of recording the film? Or were you just old off for having your phone out?

YABVU. There are announcements at the start of the film that say to have your phone off/silent, and for it to stay in your bag. A lit up phone in a dark room is very distracting for other people.

They do still come in and check
And I've not seen screens publically broadcast the audience 🤣

Were you the same one accusing everyone of bullying on the other cinema thread? 🤣

She wouldn't have been told off if she didn't have her phone out, which she shouldn't have anyway!

Megifer · 17/04/2024 18:40

Sounds like you made the mistake of holding your phone up like normal??

Phone down near lap, put head down, turn screen brightness low, then no one cares and no one can accuse you of recording.

LordSnot · 17/04/2024 18:44

Please say what cinema this was! I would love to go to one that tells knobs to get off their phone.

How do people not know cinema etiquette when it's announced RIGHT BEFORE THE FILM?

Last time I went I had to tell the couple next to me to shut up so I could hear the film and they acted like startled field mice.

Kalevala · 17/04/2024 18:46

You should have turned your phone off or at least had it on vibrate if you had a child at home or elderly person who couldn't wait a couple of hours. Then you should have left the theatre to deal with a call if needed. Emails aren't usually used for urgent matters.

Soubriquet · 17/04/2024 18:46

This is so strange - people use their phones in the cinema all the time. You must have been holding your phone in a suspicious way (eg held up in an angle that you’re trying to record the screen) for them to have even taken notice.

Are you joking? Has this obnoxious behaviour been normalised now?

I’m quite confused, how is that obnoxious behaviour? You do realise that someone being on their phone could literally mean picking it up to check the time then immediately putting it back down, it doesn’t mean speaking to someone? Plus you can dim the light on your screen all the way to minimum. Struggling to understand what the joke is, unless you’re not tech literate.

Who are all these people checking the time in the middle of the movie? Do they have a train to catch?

The problem is, many people don't dim the light on their phones and don't turn them over momentarily to 'check the time' it's distracting for people sitting behind them. Such bad form.

When I've been to the cinema I've always had a good idea when the film will end and planned accordingly. Why are people needing to know the time?

Why on earth do you need to check the time in the middle of watching a film at the cinema?
Even dimming the light on your phone is annoying to others in there.
The excuses and entitlement are ridiculous.

The last time I was at DD's secondary school there was a mother in reception trying to argue that her ds wasn't using his phone in class - he was just 'telling the time'.
