To be annoyed I was accused of recording in cinema

Yes I was my phone for a short while as I had received an important email. I think if most of been when they came in to do the checks as she looked toward me then the team leader came in and told me to put my phone away. Aibu to think surely they can tell the difference between a person using their phone and recording and it’s a pretty big to accuse someone of it

You had your phone out in the cinema. I'd assume they thought you were being an utter dick rather than recording.

He was shot because he attacked the man who asked him to to turn off his phone

He threw popcorn at him because the shooter told him to put his phone away. Even in America you shouldn't be shot for that.

"the evidence proved the defense contention that Oulson, before being shot, threw his cellphone at Reeves, striking him in the face, then appeared ready to climb over the seats and attack."

The jury believed this version of events.

You're totally unreasonable to get your phone out during a film. It's very disruptive and you should have left the auditorium and dealt with your email.

evtheria · 17/04/2024 08:14

I think you've got to suck the accusation up - your phone should've been on Do Not Disturb, or you should have hurried out to quickly do your email... any misunderstandings are on you.

^corrected call to email

I don't think they did prove he threw the phone, although I can't quite remember it's all on CCTV. None of the witnesses saw the phone being thrown and the defence had an expert who said that in the 1.5 seconds between when you see the popcorn and the shot being fired there was no time to throw the phone. I watched all of the trial but it was a few years ago. The shooter was a former police officer. That I remember.

I was so shocked when he got off. Despite the police connection! He portrayed himself as a doddery old man in court then after the trial we was playing golf and swinging grandchildren around.

Seeing phone screen light up in cinemas is really annoying when you've paid to see a film in darkness.

I took my DC to see a film in half term and the family in front of me took a very young child along with an older one. They let the young child what an iPad all through it. Yes it was on silent but the screen was lit up in the row in front of us.

It's really not acceptable

reallytimetodeclutter · 17/04/2024 08:24

@VestibuleVirgin
"Shouldn't you have remained in work, because clearly you need to be available to recieve ooo communications?"

I have a job which requires be to check emails outside office hours: I'm really expected to monitor emails even on evenings, weekends, holidays.

But I still agree with you: one of the best things about going to the cinema is putting away the damn phone for once and being immersed in the film (unlike watching telly at home where I'm often picking up my phone to look).

I simply wouldn't go if I knew I was in the middle of something urgent that would require me to work during the film.

And I'd be annoyed if someone near me was writing emails.

Hiker50 · 17/04/2024 08:27

People even looking at their screens in the cinema is incredibly annoying. There was a woman on her phone reading or working when I was at a film recently with my kids. The staff kept telling her to put it away. Once they'd gone she got it out again. In the dark the bright screen was really distracting.

Grimedd · 17/04/2024 08:27

I work in a cinema. People (men) regularly try to record steamy bits of films and we need to know so we can kick them out and ban them. You should not be using your phone during a film ever, its incredibly annoying to everyone else, even fitbits and smartwatches flashing every time you move your wrist are enough to drive the person next to you potty. I'd have kicked you out sorry.

SoEmbarrassed2024 · 17/04/2024 08:31

Even if you weren't recording, you were being an inconsiderate dick to be using your phone in a cinema!

The light is distracting and annoying to everyone around you, you shouldn't have even known you got the email let alone responded so yes yabu.

Jokl · 17/04/2024 08:33

This is no ordinary email, this is an ✨ important email ✨
You shouldn’t have even been checking to see your emails, go out if you want to check your correspondence 🙄

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/04/2024 08:36

Hate people using phones at any point once the lights are down in the cinema. If I had my way, no one would be allowed in once the film had started either!

Maybe they should do something so that mobile phones don't work in cinemas - no phone service and no WiFi? No idea if that's possible!

mitogoshi · 17/04/2024 08:36

If your phone was turned off on on silent in your bag you would not have known you received the email! You obviously were checking in, watch films at home if you can't bear to be without it for 2.5 hours

That’s an insane level of entitlement! Why are people such dicks nowadays?? 😩

Beautiful3 · 17/04/2024 08:38

It's really rude to have your phone out in the cinema. It lights up the room and is distracting. I'm sure you could have waited 1.5 hours to check your emails.

Lesterall · 17/04/2024 08:39

You're so important that it's OK for you to disturb other cinema users with your phone. Shame they didn't chuck you out. If cinemas were stricter it would be much nicer using them.

Benefit of the doubt? There's no doubt.
She wouldn't have known she had an email, important or otherwise if she hadn't been on her phone in the first place.
If she was anxiously awaiting an email, she shouldn't have been in a cinema annoying everyone around her.

I thought that sounded like bollocks, so I checked. He was shot because he attacked the man who asked him to to turn off his phone. The jury decided that man was entitled to defend himself. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Shooting someone because they’ve thrown popcorn in your face seems a bit of an overreaction to me, then again this is Florida….

Checkitt · 17/04/2024 01:11

This is so strange - people use their phones in the cinema all the time. You must have been holding your phone in a suspicious way (eg held up in an angle that you’re trying to record the screen) for them to have even taken notice.

Well they shouldn't! It's highly inconsiderate and rude.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/04/2024 08:41

They didn't accuse you of recording per se, but the rule is no phone use in the cinema. It's distracting and rude and you could of course be recording. They are just doing their jobs.

GladysHeeler · 17/04/2024 08:42

The jury decided that man was entitled to defend himself.

Well they were nuts then weren't they!

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 17/04/2024 08:42

Another "but it was important and so I had to look at my phone during the film and now I'm annoyed for being called out for being a distraction"

TheTripThatWasnt · 17/04/2024 08:50

I don't think I've ever seen a post on MN where the first 90+ posts are all in compelte agreement! Will this be enough for OP to realise that she is firmly in the wrong here, or will she be back with a "yes, but..." which will then prompt another deluge of posts telling her she's wrong!

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 17/04/2024 08:51

GiantHornets · 17/04/2024 07:57

It’s rude to use your phone during the ads and trailers as well.

I want to watch those - if you don’t, go outside to play with your phone please

If the lights are still on, it's not rude....

TheMuskratOfDestiny · 17/04/2024 08:54

Nothing important thay genuinely can't wait comes in by email.
