Nursery keep spelling child’s name wrong

Child has a name that has multiple legitimate spellings, at least 4 that I can think of, but it’s a name that’s popular across Europe and tends to be spelt slightly differently in each country. We have used the second most common UK variant, which is only slightly less commonly used than the most common variant.

It’s spelt wrong all the time by family, friends and strangers. Fine, a tad annoying when it’s family or close friends but whatever.

Nursery persistently spell his name wrong. I’ve told them this multiple times. It was spelt wrong on his peg and I had to tell them 3 times before they finally changed the label. It’s spelt wrong on his drawings. Then today we had an assessment report from them and it was spelt wrong throughout. He’s been going there for almost 2 years.

Aren’t they supposed to be the ones helping him to learn to recognise and write his name? Surely it’s going to confuse him seeing it spelt wrong all the time.

I think I’m going to send a polite but strongly worded email in response to the progress report. Surely his key worker should be able to spell his name at the very least? Am I being unreasonable?

Yup, Welsh speaker and it rhymes with eye not yay.

You are not being unreasonable and there is either poor communication at your child's nursery or their lack of care about this needs to be nipped in the bud. Write. Don't phone (best email). Tell them that you mentioned this verbally and it has not been corrected. Keep evidence. It's unprofessional behaviour and says more about the nursery than the choice of name spelling for your child. Don't mention feelings. Just stick to the facts.

I think maybe you need to consider the possibility that you live in an area of Wales which uses one pronounciation and that I live in one that uses the other?

We're on a thread about getting people's name's wrong and here's you trying to tell me how to say my son's name correctly. Bonkers. 😂

We have Welsh speaking family who use the pronounciation that you use too, but we live in a different area (the Vale of Glamorgan) and my son is always called Yay-an by Welsh speakers here. You seem entirely convinced you're the authority here though so I'm sure the thousands of times I've heard it have all been wrong.

Both versions are here.

With my experience of schools- can I suggest you go in and speak to the office manager - whoever does the admin. Get then to change it in their main system in front of you. Then ask if they use any other systems, or have any other word docs or mail merges or online learnjng jorunals or anything else set up and get them to change this too. So often a name can be corrected in one place and still be wrong in others and stuff gets printed off from wherever that person has always done it etc. Shouldn't be like this, but often is practically...

Nope. I'm from the Vale and I've taught loads of Ieuans. Never heard anyone say it yay in my life 😂

Ignoring the two pronunciations I posted then?

Why is this a problem for you? Have a think.

My name can only be spelt correctly one way and people have got it wrong all my life. And change my sex as a result too!!

MaggieHM · 22/04/2024 13:34

Also when it comes to male and female versions different countries spell them differently. Lesley to me in UK would usually indicate female but it doesn't in USA. Nursery and school and workplaces should get it right though.

linsey2581 · 23/04/2024 16:13

Ha! You think you have it bad @QueryAutism just take a look at my name. There are over 30 ways to spell my name, it does bug me when people spell it wrong even my granny on my dad’s side couldn’t get it right. One year she wrote 6 different spellings inside my birthday card with please tick appropriate box (nine of which had the correct spelling 🙄).
Yes I would have a word with the school and get it drummed into them!

Ie is pronounced as ay in the north and as eye in the south.

yay-an - north Wales
y-eye-an - south Wales

Why write a whole post about a name, and then coyly refuse to divulge the actual name so responders know the genuine issue?

If the name is "popular" as you say, it's not going to identify you or your child.

There’s literally no need to know the name in order to be able to respond to this post 😂 It doesn’t really matter what the name is, you’ll just have to take my word for it that it’s fairly well used and has multiple legitimate spellings I guess. Just imagine it’s Stephen/Steven… it’s not, but it’s really not that important.
