To think this is a perfectly fine evening meal?

Had porridge at about 7am this morning and have been busy all day. Have just made myself tea (see pic) and my aunt (who is staying with me for a few days) has made me feel really bad about it - apparently it's too much food and a "greedy meal"

Aibu to think it's fine as an evening meal?

It's four new potatoes, boiled and crisped in the pan with a little olive oil (not how I'd usually have them with a salad type tea, but they were still a bit hard!), two slices of cheese, a tablespoon of fat free cottage cheese/coleslaw, two slices of ham, and a bit of salad cream (plus the salad leaves)

To think this is a perfectly fine evening meal?

@IroningThrone here goes. Each individual item (in theory) is fine although the quality of that ham looks horrible.
I’m a fan of each of those items but; cheese and cottage cheese is redundant, same with coleslaw and salad, and coleslaw dressing and salad dressing.
looks to me like most of these items are packaged preserved.
I’d start by combining and presenting it differently. I’d have added (much much nicer) ham into the pan fries, which could use some yellow or red pepper. Then combined the slaw and salad adjusting it with cider vinegar if too dry. I’d grate the cheese and either grill it on top of the pan fries or garnish it on top of the salad. The cottage cheese I’d serve on the side, with pineapple or have as a later snack.
It’s not the quantity but quality and farm to table (preservative) aspect.
its a deconstructed meal similar to how I’d present to a toddler or a clean out the fridge situation.

Looks like a snack to me.

SiriAlexa · 15/04/2024 14:22

I love those types of meals with leftovers, it looks delicious!. As you didn’t have lunch and were working all day it’s definitely not too much. Greedy is a horrible word to use in the context of food, it’s weirdly judgemental. Your aunty doesn’t sound very nice.

Yes - the bits you would pick at while you are making the dinner. (Roast heron, 53 different vegetables with Yorkshire puddings and at Chateau Viper tonight, then after that starter . . . ) Grin

EDIT: Spelling

UndertheCedartree · 15/04/2024 14:26

It's fine. Yes, it's quite a lot of food but it's your lunch and dinner combined!

DrCoconut · 15/04/2024 14:40

It looks fine to me. Solidarity from one coeliac to another! The M&S tiger bread might go with it?

DrCoconut · 15/04/2024 14:49

@VestibuleVirgin my grand parents used to say overfaced for a situation where a meal was just too big for the person being served. My DS used to be easily overfaced and people used to do it to him regularly at things like parties where they piled the plates high. He'd then leave it all as he was overwhelmed whereas if he'd been allowed to have a couple of items at a time he would have eaten more. He' a teenager now and has hollow legs so it didn't last!

Yes but if I did all that I wouldn't be able to dunk my ham into the salad cream or cottage cheese and my cheese into the salad cream. 😂😂

I also absolutely loathe peppers sorry!

Eat what you want, when you want and tell her to mind her own business

BirthdayRainbow · 15/04/2024 18:04

This reminds me of the thread where a poster said she had cereal for breakfast yet a friend/relative/fellow guest had nice cheeses, good quality meats and she couldn't understand how she was so slim eating that when cereal eater was not.

It's not the quantity of food. It's the right kind of food.

You could eat 200* calories of chocolate versus 200 calories of slow release food and mange until next meal but not if eating the chocolate etc.

Obviously for ease *

IroningThrone · 15/04/2024 18:08

You'll all be glad to know she's on the train home!

And I'm heading out shortly to pick up my fish and chips! 😁 (the shop has just recently started selling GF stuff and it's so tasty! They're also super careful about contamination which makes me happy!)

Even if it was a huge meal (which it isn't), you're a grown woman and can choose to eat whatever you like!!!!

BooBooDoodle · 15/04/2024 18:21

I’d tell your aunt to politely poke off and ask her when she’s leaving. Wouldn’t want any guest staying under my roof questioning my food choices. How rude! It looks bloody lovely

Kitkat930 · 15/04/2024 18:22

I looked at the pic first and thought it wasn’t acceptable as it isn’t much food 😂 It’s a salad, so a light evening meal. The majority of the plate is lettuce, so barely any cals. I don’t see any issues with it and she shouldn’t be giving you a complex about food. I’m a healthy weight btw and have what I’d say is a normal appetite - 3 meals a day and two snacks is my usual :)

Crikeyalmighty · 15/04/2024 18:27

@MsLuxLisbon yep- I think it tripped off the tongue easily because I've never had issues around food (apart from
Liking it a bit too much) and would just have laughed - certainly he's never commented ever again on anyone's choices

WoosMama13 · 15/04/2024 18:31

It's absolutely good enough. And if you are satisfied by it, who can tell you otherwise? Looks yummy. Love a good salad for dinner!

Yum. I'd eat that all day long. Aunt is bonkers.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 14/04/2024 17:50

If you think it's the right amount of food - it's the right amount of food. It is absolutely nothing to do with your aunt, unless you are going to sit her down and force feed it to her.

This. Absolutely. Nothing to do with her.

I thought the stomach had huge capacity to stretch.
It's empty size is about the size of a fist and if you carry on eating and eating it will stretch, won't it?

I admit that I don't know what ED would result in a very small stomach w/o the capacity to stretch.

While you'r eating yes, but it doesnt then remain that size (the stretched size) ever after, its like when you poo or have a baby, your body changes the size of the thing it needs to for the thing it needs to do, but your body doesnt stay that way

It makes it sound as if, if you eat too much regularly your stomach just sits there all flappy and empty.

Perhaps the poster had an operation or something.

imisscashmere · 15/04/2024 08:54

How can it be THAT different
though?

We’re just mammals after all. I don’t think there’s such a huge variation in intakes in other species?

If it IS that different, then any guidance on ideal nutritional intake is basically bogus?

What?

Do you think a St Bernard eats the same quantity as a teacup yorkshire terrier?

soupfiend · 15/04/2024 18:45

Crikeyalmighty · 15/04/2024 11:02

@soupfiend just a mention that Poundland sell it! Yep I was shocked but there you are . I buy 3 tubs a time as it's got a fairly long life.

Home bargains too. I have to make a special trip for my fix

I have no idea why its so hard to get it in actual supermarkets.

Ladymeade · 15/04/2024 19:15

Your aunt is a CF! I don't get why people have to comment like this?! Mind your own business springs to mind!

Are you aware that the different breeds of dog are the result of deliberate human intervention?

Well done on your patronising question though, you sound very 😎

It's not just domestic animals though.

Most predatory animals like lions are lucky if they eat every week, and prey animals such as antelope, rabbits etc take in huge amounts of roughage so they poo out almost as many calories as they take in (the principle of the F-plan diet, I believe).

And they are on the whole much more active to have to "earn" those calories. That's what you rarely see an obese rhino etc (except in Jumanji).
