To think this is a perfectly fine evening meal?

Had porridge at about 7am this morning and have been busy all day. Have just made myself tea (see pic) and my aunt (who is staying with me for a few days) has made me feel really bad about it - apparently it's too much food and a "greedy meal"

Aibu to think it's fine as an evening meal?

It's four new potatoes, boiled and crisped in the pan with a little olive oil (not how I'd usually have them with a salad type tea, but they were still a bit hard!), two slices of cheese, a tablespoon of fat free cottage cheese/coleslaw, two slices of ham, and a bit of salad cream (plus the salad leaves)

How old is she? My parents ate less and less as they grew older. I went over fur lunch once and the salad they put out for the three of us I would have eaten on my own.
If she's weird about food you just have to ignore her (and quite rude of her to comment).

You are right! I am older and definitely eat far less than I did. But I hope I never turn into one of those parents who forget how much younger people like to eat. When the family visit I always make sure we have plenty of food with lots of snacks such as tea cakes, scones, yoghurts and fruit etc for people to help themselves to in between meals. I love to watch everyone eating and would hate the thought that anyone was left feeling hungry.

Copperoliverbear · 14/04/2024 23:17

Looks lovely, older people can be cantankerous at times

wfhwfh · 14/04/2024 23:23

This is exactly the kind of tea I love and often have myself. I don’t think it’s at all greedy and think it’s a great balance of fat, protein & carbs.

The only difference is I wouldn’t manage to skip lunch!

Hemakesmesmile2 · 14/04/2024 23:26

That’s a belting dish! I’d eat that happily. Your aunt is clearly jealous of your tea.

wfhwfh · 14/04/2024 23:26

I also really dislike when people comment on what other people eat. IMO, the only acceptable comment is “That looks delicious!” People eat different amounts but commenting on how much or little someone eats is really crass & rude.

I'd love it, but from a cost perspective (presuming that your Aunt is older); there are three protein sources in one meal there ( expensive) and a heap of fried potatoes larger than your portion of veg (of which half is covered in mayonnaise).
It was rude of her to comment at all. It looks delicious. It's certainly a calorie dense meal.

A heap of potatoes? It’s 4 new potatoes. Plus the green salad alone is the same size and there’s other veg too.

It's coleslaw! What else is it going to be "covered" in Confused

The weirdness about food on here...
A couple of pieces of ham, some cheese... it's not exactly caviar prices

Lilyscotswolds · 14/04/2024 23:38

Thats a totally normal and healthy meal! I’d argue even on the lower end of a normal amount of dinner calories. How rude of her!

Gunpowder · 14/04/2024 23:47

It’s absolutely fine. Of course she shouldn’t meddle in what you are eating. I think a ‘yes, I know we need less food as we get older. I’m still young enough to have an appetite’ (said with a smile) would have been justified.

Sasqwatch · 14/04/2024 23:59

Sprogonthetyne · 14/04/2024 17:49

It's slightly more then I'd usually have, but if you missed lunch (I'm guessing as you mentioned breakfast and nothing else), you'd want a big tea. Over the course of the day you've not had much

A ‘big tea’ are you the Aunt? 🙄

IroningThrone · 14/04/2024 23:59

Concannon88 · 14/04/2024 23:05

Was she alive during the war? Most old people I've met think this sort of this would feed a whole family as they grew up with rationing!

Nope! She's 61 so hardly old!

That’s one of my favourite meals! Perfect Sunday tea 😀

ASeagulStoleMyIceCream · 15/04/2024 00:07

Your meal looks balanced and perfect to me.

Yes but although calorifically its not much, I have a very small stomach capacity. due to an eating disorder. I physically wouldnt be able to eat that in one go. Like I have to eat a sandwich over about an hour because I couldnt eat both halves in one go. I try to eat a normal amount of calories but its difficult to do with three meals a day, I have to graze.

How does having an eating disorder give you a small stomach capacity? Stomachs are stretchy. I’m not being rude, just curious

Don’t be ridiculous, it’s 4 sautéed potatoes, a couple of slices of thin processed ham, two small pieces of cheddar, a dollop of cottage cheese and a handful of leaves.

It’s not especially expensive (that is not posh ham), it’s not especially calorie, dense and there is no portion that could be described as a heap.

It is a lightish main meal.

Mine hasn't been stretched basically. I really can't physically eat very much without feeling very uncomfortable at best or in pain at worst.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/04/2024 00:36

I should add that a lot of people I know think that having bellyache after a big dinner is a good thing, but are always hungry becausetheir stomach rarelyfeels full. I think feeling pain or discomfort should be avoided but maybe that's the ED talking.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 15/04/2024 01:03

It looks bloody gorgeous. I could just wolf that down now ❤️

azlazee1 · 15/04/2024 02:36

Guess who I wouldn't invite again, hmmmmm.

Fraaahnces · 15/04/2024 02:43

What did she have? Do you think she’s anorexic? My mum was and she used to be obsessed with what and how much other people were eating and of course her particular pet peeve was “fat content” of bloody everything. I also have coeliac disease so a keto diet worked wonders for me for ease and anti-inflammation. She could not wrap her head around it at all. I lost weight, had glowing skin and ate fat all the time. She also smoked over 100 cigarettes a day and was genuinely surprised when diagnosed with lung cancer and COPD. I suspect it was because she was obsessed with policing everyone else.

anon4net · 15/04/2024 02:56

My dear Mum would balk at a plate of food that size and make comments too. What my Mum doesn't appreciate, is she snacks with things like biscuits and toast between meals so eats less at meals, then judges everyone's plates.

Looks tasty @IroningThrone !

not perfectly fine for me, any of my family members or my friends and colleagues but if you are pleased with this that's all that matters.
it's a bit fussy eater lunch buffet, toddler picky eater, cleaning out the fridge of left overs.

Notquitethere60 · 15/04/2024 04:25

Nothing to do with the thread but the cost of 100 cigarettes per day!
The food looks fine btw. I’m older than your aunt and I had about that amount of food for lunch as well as roast beef and veg for dinner.

NewGirlinClass · 15/04/2024 04:56

I think the plate looks smaller than I use for main meals. Was there other food available were there extra potatoes or more salad for anyone to add? Was there cheese on the table to cut for oneself.
Did you just put it on the plate as we see and serve.
