Prostitute checked into our hotel!

Ok, so away in London for a couple of days with DH and DD (10). We were staying in a 4* Hotel which is part of a large chain of hotels, not a small independent. We went to reception about 10.30 on the 2nd morning and was met with a lady (who was very obviously a prostitute) being told her room would be ready in 5 mins and her handing over £100 in cash to the receptionist. The hotel is £250+ a night and check in is 3pm!

AIBU to this this made the hotel feel a bit icky and sleazy after I saw that? Husband and I spoke briefly when DD wasn’t listening and he said “well they have to work somewhere!”. Not sure if I’m turning into a prude in my old age, but I really didn’t feel comfortable in the hotel after I saw that. I’m sure for her, it was a safe and comfortable place to work and I know this goes on in hotels, I suppose just seeing it in broad daylight shocked me a bit. We knew what she was there for, the receptionist knew what she was there for, the man behind us in the queue knew what she was there for, maybe I thought she and the hotel should have been a bit more discreet if they allow this to go on in their hotel, especially when it’s a family friendly hotel and there were a lot of children around?

Was this an IBIS hotel?

I use them quite a lot for work and the one in Barking is full of prostitutes.

But they keep themselves to themselves and neither they nor their clients ever cause any problems that I've witnessed.

As for there being 'children around', I don't see what difference that makes? It's not as if they're in the room with them.

But most 'day rate' hotels seem to attract them.

She paid £100 as she counted it out in £10 notes as she gave it to the receptionist. I don’t want to get into a discussion about you shouldn’t judge a women by what she was wearing etc, let’s just say it was very obvious that she was a prostitute hiring room for the day. This was 10.30am in the morning, not the night.

How was it obvious though?
Was it her clothes?
Was it the way she leant on the counter?
Did she tell you she was booking in by the hour?
Was it the fact that she was paying in cash?
Confused

GalileoHumpkins · 13/04/2024 16:58

Was this her OP?

BettyShagter · 13/04/2024 16:58

Very unusual for a hotel to even accept cash nowadays.

Most of them don't as they want card details incase of any damage.

KM99 · 13/04/2024 16:59

You are aware some hotels offer day occupancy for half the price? I've used it before for shopping trips, bit of afternoon sex etc when I couldn't stay over. Sometimes dressed up and in make up. Shocking, eh?

Firstly she was just a woman checking in, so no need for labelling anyway.

Plus you’re about two decades behind the times if you don’t understand that prostitution can be part of sex work but isn’t the be and end all of sex work.

Your reply here makes no sense in the context of the post you are referring to. Even on the terms you outline, that poster was referring specifically to prostitution which you yourself say is a subset of what you call sex work.

I find these sneering ‘you are behind the times’ comments really juvenile. If you have an argument to make, make it. Don’t hide behind these backhanded attempts to big yourself up with what you fondly seem to think are your modern, progressive ( regressive from my point of view) credentials.

It seems pretty clear these attempts at put downs are part of an agenda to put discredit women who hold the line that prostitution is exploitative.

Jk8 · 13/04/2024 17:00

What if she'd worked their the night before & was bribing the staff into extra room cleans/change of rooms/extra stay time inbetween clients/something in particular to be done to the room ????
I doubt she was checking in at 10.30am for a heavily cut price room with a blatant prositute look So yes your probably getting old or are just not 'used' to how things 'work'

Comedycook · 13/04/2024 17:01

As long as you're not sharing a room with her, put it out of your mind.

Omg the horror of it all!

<Clutching my pearls>

Me too. Literally.
😂

SheerLucks · 13/04/2024 17:02

In the 90s a friend of mine lived in a flat share in a lovely part of town when she was at university.

The flat below was a brothel and many nights they'd come home from a pub or club to find men queuing up the stairs!

PoppyCherryDog · 13/04/2024 17:03

Im curious as to what makes someone very obviously a prostitute? I can only assume she was wearing a badge.

CormorantStrikesBack · 13/04/2024 17:03

Unless you could hear them going at it in the room next to you I don’t see why it affects you. I highly doubt your kids would have picked up on the situation and if they did then they’re old enough to know it happens

BuntyWindermear · 13/04/2024 17:04

If she was indeed a sex worker maybe instead of judging her you should judge the man who’s going to pay to abuse her body !!

ByUmberViewer · 13/04/2024 16:40

This happened to me once at the iconic Betsy Hotel in Miami. Place was crawling with them. Horrible.

I sympathise but there's really not much else you can do to be honest.

Why, what did they do to you?

Would you have preferred loads of young couples having dirty sex in the hotel rooms? Would that have been ok? Or it it because they were getting paid to have what would have been exactly the same outcome? Because it makes no difference to you.

underscorer · 13/04/2024 17:05

Would you rather she was only allowed to work under a railway underpass? Her money is as good as yours, even if it's cash and not a black Amex.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/04/2024 17:05

Lol so what. That's where sex workers tend to work from, if they are sensible.
The person who checked afterwards could have been an arms dealing rapist but you wouldn't judge him cos he was a man in a suit?
Get over it. Sorry but it is central London. Every day a 'prostitute' sleeps/works in every hotel.

therealcookiemonster · 13/04/2024 17:06

GodZilah · 13/04/2024 15:18

Also prostitution related or not that hotel room will be covered in jizz regardless.

exactly

Menomeno · 13/04/2024 17:06

I’m a bit shocked at your naivety. I used to manage a team of staff that were based all over the UK, so I’d travel and meet them in hotels for 121s. I’d always see sex workers coming and going. It’s really common. They were nice hotels too. They’ve got to work somewhere. They’re only having sex, not carrying out satanic sacrifices.

SqB · 13/04/2024 17:06

I sometimes use hotels during the day. I’m not a sex worker, but travel for work a fair amount. Many hotels now allow you to book a room for the day - they at least make some money on an empty room that hasn’t been booked for that evening. After a long drive, it is nice to have a nap, have a shower and carrying on working in a bit of piece. There’s a website now where you can find these day rooms.

I’m not sure why this would upset you to be honest. What people do in their rooms isn’t visible to anyone else. Whether or not she is a sex worker shouldn’t really matter. I’m not sure how clothes would determine this either.

Grar · 13/04/2024 17:08

Ooh to think something like that couldve gone on in the room, the bed you stayed in! Was this her?!

FKAT · 13/04/2024 17:10

The only naive people here are the ones who think that prostitution is like Pretty Woman or Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. "They're only having sex" LOL.

My first thought when I saw it was cash was affair not sex worker. Usually the ones having affairs can't risk it showing on their bank statement so pay in cash, that's another way we spot them when they are checking in.

danitheastrologer · 13/04/2024 17:11

Muthaofcats · 13/04/2024 15:19

*sex worker

and would you prefer she worked on the street?

What are you, the language police?

danitheastrologer · 13/04/2024 17:13

Can you still pay in cash at any decent hotel? I was under the impression that all of them required to book online and pay before you check in.

bingboo121 · 13/04/2024 17:15

good chance many have slept in the bed yo did too- what about it tho? isn't it expected staying in a hotel, where else would they work.
