Sick of this fucking weather. No wonder we are all ill and fat.

The heating has been on at home at some point every day for the past 7 months. I’ve no inclination to get out and walk or do anything at all after work. I come home and cook comfort food as there’s sod all else to do. Drying washing everywhere, house always looks untidy.

It’s always cold, dark, rainy, depressing. If we’re lucky we’ll get 2-3 months of a bit of warmth and sunshine before it all starts waning towards winter again.

No wonder there’s lots of bugs and colds around, we’re all indoors all the time! Couple the shitty weather with high costs of living, crap public services and it makes me wonder why I didn't feck off to Australia when I was younger.

No point to this post, just a moan!

PS Failing that, see if you can get a tumble dryer and sign up for something active that’s enjoyable!

At least the BBC agrees today. Miserable negative broadcaster that needs to stop whining.

*Why is it raining so much?

It’s been really wet recently – but just how wet and why?

We had the eighth wettest winter since records began more than 150 years ago. The start of spring continued that theme with England and Wales having more than one and a half times their average March rainfall.*

Rain bearing clouds over partially flooded fields in Chorley, Lancashire.

Why is it raining so much?

The washout weather seems relentless but why won't it stop raining, and is climate change to blame?

For me the crap weather affects me most when I’m actually inside. Having to turn the lights on in the middle of the day because it’s so dreary outside, with no forecast of sun for the foreseeable future. Grim.

User3456 · 09/04/2024 19:28

The reason there's so many bugs doing the rounds is because we're still in a pandemic with a highly infectious virus that actually damaged your immune system and makes you more susceptible to other bugs and illnesses too. And people don't want to mitigate against it. Government included, but also the general public sadly.

Speak to your MP and prospective parliamentary candidates about getting some public health measures in place to reduce spread of airborne infections. Clean air via HEPA filters in schools and health settings would be an excellent start. Proper sick pay would also make a huge difference. Wear a mask (FFP2) on public transport, in shops and in health settings as standard. And wear one everywhere if you have any symptoms. We need this to be considered the polite thing to do (like it is in Japan). Be part of the change that makes this normal.

It's not the weather, unfortunately. If only.

Having said all that, roll on summer!

I agree OP, it's absolute shite. All work and hardly any fun, because we're stuck inside every wanky weekend. No wonder there's so much depression in this country.

But then you try and go out in the one sunny weekend so far this year and everywhere is crammed to bursting😭

I live near the Peak District. There was a traffic jam though a mountain pass (Mam Tor) and into the little village of Castleton below. ( l wasn’t part of it)

I have never ever known this. And lived near the Peak District for 49 years.

@HauntedBungalow We were booked to go on a cruise on 4 Jan. The car came to pick us up and we set off in high spirits and excitement. Only to come to an abrupt halt 2 miles from home when the car ground to a halt trying to traverse a flooded road. The AA and fire brigade were called and we ended up wading through knee high water to get to safety. Luckily we were able to get home but then found that water had flowed into the cases that were in the back of the car so we had a mass of washing and drying to do as well. We were in a state of shock and felt as though we were in a nightmare. So we missed our lovely cruise that we were so looking forward to but have booked another one leaving on Saturday. We’ve got everything crossed!!!

All the people on here who are complaining - QUITE UNDERSTANDABLY - about the majorly shit weather, are not 'miserable' FFS. Just because people are sick of the RAIN, WIND, COLD, and STORMS, that doesn't make them 'miserable. What a ludicrous thing to say.

Also, as for suggesting people just go to the gym... How ridiculous! Not everyone can afford it, and plus it's as boring as fuck. I would rather shit in my hands and clap than spend half my waking hours in a naffing gym!

"would rather shit in my hands and clap" 😂

Been beautiful in NI today.

Remember Boris saying UK is the greatest country in the world.. granted there's no poisonous animals, no deadly earthquakes, minimal chance of devastating hurricanes/cyclones, and socially it's not a race-based entity (america), isn't occupying a land where an indigenous people have been ethnically cleansed/displaced so no blood stained shoes wherever you walk, there isn't a gun homicide culture or school mass shootings which has resulted in kids having 'active shooter drills' in almost every school where they practice hiding from an imaginary gunman, nor is religion a public matter (or everyone's business) and there aren't millions of religious nutters or televangelists or cults nor politicians having to reveal (or fake) their religious belief inorder to become electable, nor are women subjugated/segregated in society (middle east), nor is it illegal to be gay, so while it has many pluses, it is impossible to say such a thing with the weather.

I haven’t read any of the responses, but just wanted to say that OP, you’re right. Weather-wise, England is crap. But, having moved country a few times, I feel like if you are brave and willing to take some risks, you could dramatically improve your quality of life by moving somewhere that suits you better. It’s not this crazy impossibility-it can be done! We live in Costa Rica and we love it. I drop my kids off at school, surf in warm water-no wetsuit needed, then start work online. We have lots of family time together surfing, skateboarding, going to the beach for sunset, playing tennis etc. I used to live in Brighton and work in Kentish Town. I remember walking the pavements with wet feet from the rain seeping through my shoes and commuting on smelly trains. No thanks!

You do need money to move, but if you’re willing to commit to the idea, sometimes where there’s a will, there’s a way! Life is too short to be miserable unless you have absolutely no choice. I would encourage you to brainstorm about what possibilities might be open to you, rather than resigning yourself to a shit, unhealthy life.

I'd love to hear more about how you did this. What sort of jobs you have, if you speak multiple languages, etc. DH and I are stuck in crappy NHS healthcare jobs with no prospects, trapped with the promise of a pension when we're 70 if we're lucky. I don't think I can do this for 40 more years.

MissingMoominMamma · 09/04/2024 20:23

I’m generally outdoors. I work outdoors and I have dogs who need walking twice a day.

I am fucking sick of this weather. Everywhere here is just mud. I come home plastered in the stuff. My dogs need showering after every walk.

It makes everything harder work.

And yes, I have all the right outdoor gear!

Umbrella15 · 09/04/2024 20:39

Couldnt agree more op. We ve had a few nice warm days, but apart from that rain virtually everyday since Aug. Evan August was wet where I live. The rain is now getting less (only a few heavy showers each day with blue sky inbetween), but the ground is still muddy, so walking options are limited. I do still go out walking every day with my dog, but we have to stick to pavements as opposed to country walks or woods. Im getting fed up.

Given that some of the highest depression rates in the world are in countries such as Australia, Greece and Portugal, not sure bad weather and depression rates are connected

Long Covid has totally fucking ruined my life. Glad you can forget it but for some of us, it's impossible and we get reminded every day.

Okay, but what do you want others to do?
PP suggested wearing masks on public transport and in shops - everyone, at all times? Constantly having to pay for new ones, the used ones ending up in landfill?
“Proper sick pay” - great, but also for people with asymptomatic Covid? Or those with very mild symptoms? For how long?

Hobnobswantshernameback · 09/04/2024 21:03

Maybe start a thread to talk about Covid?

Stop telling us to be jolly and just crack on with it and that "there's no bad weather, only bad clothes!"

Personally, I didn’t tell anyone to be jolly.
The thread is about people complaining about bad weather, I’m sure the type of comments you mention were directed at them.
Fwiw, I get both sides - yes, putting on an extra jumper, a rain jacket and getting some exercise outside definitely helps, but the relentless cold and rain is annoying.

Just get out, there’s loads to do. Not sure whereabouts you live, but it’s not been that bad. Had some lovely weekends over the past 3 months.
Lots of walks, even wild swimming is a new one for me, paddle boarding, pub crawls etc.

Also, why do you have to eat bad food everyday?

Sorry, don’t get the post, you sound very unhappy about many things and blaming a slightly wetter winter than normal on everything.
