To think snobbery around the Kardashians is a bit pathetic?

Just doing a rewatch of the series and was discussing it with a colleague. Sure enough another colleague pipes up with ‘I’ve never heard of them, don’t know who they are’.

He does know who they are. Whenever they’re mentioned someone always pretends not to know who they are or pretends to never have heard of them. Clearly they think it makes them hugely intelligent and superior.

AIBU to think this is annoying and if you don’t want to discuss a subject don’t join in the conversation?

I’m not living under a rock so of course I’ve heard of them, seen plenty clips of the TV show. They can’t be that thick either if they made the money they have, good luck to them but they are absolutely painful to listen to and not something I’d watch. People who pretend to have never heard of them/ other major pop culture are just as painful though.

What actual conversation could you have about the Kardashians that isn't judging or taking the piss a bit? And if you're doing it at work, colleagues will overhear and join in.

I’ve had a fair few serious discussions about them regarding their effect upon beauty norms, the moral and ethical issues surrounding surrogacy and its normalisation amongst the rich etc.

I’ve also had conversations taking the piss.

But it’s why people pretend they’re too intellectual and high brow to have even heard of them that irritates me.

I'm sorry OP but if that was anything other than ironic, it's just plain sad. Nothing to do with being snobby but you mean less than nothing to them.

I know of them, don't care about them, this thread was in 'trending'. Knock yourself out in your devotion if you like but if you post a thread then expect responses.

Of course it was ironic in response to being asked if I was a ‘superfan’ because I had a conversation about them.

I am finding as I get older, that I really don't know much about celebrity stuff anymore. My references tend to stop in the early 2000s. I never thought I'd be like this. But I'm just not interested enough. I don't follow people on insta and don't use tiktok. I know what who the kardashians are, but couldn't tell you which one is which. I read the news and listen to radio 4, but they don't tend to be on the much.

And Taylor Swift? I know I've definitely heard one of her songs , but I they don't play her on radio 6 so won't have heard her.

FangsForTheMemory · 07/04/2024 16:31

Honestly, I know who they are, and I know some women dress themselves up like Kim Kardashian clones, but that's it. I'm just not interested in them.

OutOfTheHouse · 07/04/2024 16:20

Can you list some of the other celebrities that you believe people make up not having heard of?
There are some people who are unknown to those of us without Instagram or TikTok.

It’s just like if someone older mentioned someone who was very famous 30 years ago there is a chance you would have heard of them, assuming you are 20/30 something.

It’s not just celebrity, it’s things considered ‘low brow’. Another colleague claimed never to have heard of fan fiction.

I suspect lots of people have never heard of fan fiction!

Yeah? What purpose do they serve?

Taylor has principles, is a feminist and is socially aware.

The Kardashians are none of this.

Passed the bar, became a qualified lawyer and works to get wrongly accused people out of prison. I'm not a fan but they aren't thick

MsCactus · 07/04/2024 16:43

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 13:44

Why join a conversation about them then?

They are not thick as mince. It sounds so jealous and bitter when people speak about women who’ve launched such a cultural and financial empire like that.

There's definitely a sexism to it imo.

Yes they are reality TV stars originally but they've now built a multi-million dollar business empire. They run so many businesses and are hugely successful entrepreneurs. The only reason you get comments like pp "thick as mince" is because they're women.

No man who had made such successful businesses and online followings would be called thick. Also, if you can hear them speak you can tell theyre all intelligent

Whaaaaat? Granted, they’ve managed to create successful businesses. But….. really????

Of course I’m winding you up. I didn’t think it was subtle 🙄

Well aren't you cute enough to kiss and 🙄🙄right back at you. Anyway as it happens I think you probably are deadly serious and are using the 'wind up' thang to cover up your understandable mortification at your public declaration of love and support for these hideous empty plastic people.

Could not agree more. I think it accounts for the ‘other people are responsible for their success’ comments too.

Agree he most likely has heard of them I mean, it's hard not to really.

I however am a total snob when it comes to people like the Kardashian's. Vacuous, zero talent and they are making millions by changing their faces every year and making our young girls believe that by buying their average products they too, can achieve such unrealistic beauty standards.

Yup I'm a judgey cow at times.

Exactly my view.

I think it's like all those "celebrities" who are on various reality programmes. Maybe I've heard of them but most of them I haven't. I see no reason to be interested in them or anything they say. The influence they have over some people seems unhealthy to me. How many people have had botched botox or overspent their budget trying to emulate them?

I can appreciate someone who has a talent - Taylor Swift for her song writing, certain sports people for their sense to step away from playing and turn to a career in broadcasting etc - but not someone who seems to be somewhat famous just for being famous or married to someone who once was famous.

One name for you - Trump.

Certainly wish I'd never heard of him.

As far as I'm aware Trump has actually lost money on the vast businesses he inherited. I remember a stat that if he'd not touched his inheritance and done nothing he'd be vastly richer than he is now. He definitely hasn't built anything up successfully - not a comparison imo

By people do you mean this one man? Otherwise how do you know who people have and haven’t heard of.

I’m not sure why people are filling the thread with multiple variations of ‘I’ve heard of them but don’t know much about them/don’t like them’.

I remember hearing about them in uni and hearing the same things posters have been saying yet had never watched the show in maybe 2009. They came up in conversation between a male friend and I, and I asked him what did they do for people to have such an issue with them (he knew more about them than me) and think he mentioned the sextape and said a few other things, but didn’t really get it either.

I still don’t get it and think moaning about unattainable beauty standards which does make me eyeroll when there are plenty of women who have such attributes naturally without surgery, simplistic and a lack of personal and parental responsibility.

They turned their 15 minutes into almost two decades with the help of the people who love, like, and hate them and continue to make money off of it. They make money off their haters every time such people can’t help but click on anything about them and moan or say they don’t care. Most do know how algorithms work and that sites count clicks and audiences yet people still moan about them anyway. If one really doesn’t care, surely they wouldn’t comment or click on whatever they are on.

They have some type of savvy to have been around as long as they have so doubt they are as thick as people rather want to believe they are.
