To think snobbery around the Kardashians is a bit pathetic?

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 13:37

Just doing a rewatch of the series and was discussing it with a colleague. Sure enough another colleague pipes up with ‘I’ve never heard of them, don’t know who they are’.

He does know who they are. Whenever they’re mentioned someone always pretends not to know who they are or pretends to never have heard of them. Clearly they think it makes them hugely intelligent and superior.

AIBU to think this is annoying and if you don’t want to discuss a subject don’t join in the conversation?

I live for them ❤️

OP, your colleague was annoying and a bit rude, but not pathetic. "Living for" someone you've never met is though. Perhaps he was trying to save you from yourself.

What’s wrong with living for the Kardashians? I write to them often and I think I’m coming close to getting a reply.

As much as i can tell you about them is one has been married loads and became famous for porn and the whole family jumped on the bandwagon. Oh and one had a baby with a bloke that was constantly cheating and they called the baby Truth. Who actually cares about them?

MammaTo · 07/04/2024 15:44

Imagine starting a thread to defend the Kardashians 🫣

Do you lack comprehension skills?

In ten years maybe four or five teams, usually after they’re a quiz question at the pub
You've kept tabs on your colleague's response to the Kardashians being mentioned over 10 years, enough to say that 4-5 times when Kardashians are mentioned in the last decade that you don't like his response and start a thread about him?

OutOfTheHouse · 07/04/2024 15:48

LolaSmiles · 07/04/2024 15:28

This might be playing devil's advocate but I wonder if there's something tongue in cheek about his comments.

If the OP can say that every time the Kardashians are brought up this colleague says he hasn't heard of them, how often are they the topic of conversation at work?

I could see how someone might say things like "who? Never heard of them" if they subjected to regular conversations about who said what on reality TV because they're hearing about them a lot.

I agree. He’s saying it to get a rise out of the op.

Yeah, I keep a tally chart and tick topics off each night.

Most people wouldn't notice if their colleague mentioned something 4-5 times in a month, let alone spread over 10 years.
😂

Blueyandsocks · 07/04/2024 16:00

Woah why is Taylor Swift being dragged into a discussion about the Kardashians? Leave Taylor alone 😂

I've heard of them, couldn't tell you much more. So what

Fairly sure if a person was having a conversation five times a month with the same person and each time they claimed to have never heard of the subject matter they would notice.

Unlikely. It's a tiny number of conversations. At most it would fall under a minor observation.

A thread about 4-5 responses over 10 years is funny though.

Justcallmebebes · 07/04/2024 16:09

I don't believe anyone who says they've never heard of the Kardashians. They must have either been in a coma or living under a rock for the last 10 years and actually, it makes them sound ignorant like they don't read or follow any current affairs or media ever, at all!

From this one person. This was one example. Lots of people do it. False protestations that they’ve never heard of perceived low brow entertainers.

Having to spoon feed posters is tiring.

Indeed! It’s not the badge of honour they think it is.

Again, I know she’s a singer, and I’d probably recognise her in a photo, but I honestly couldn’t name one of her songs, and if I’ve heard them, as is perfectly possible, I didn’t know they were hers.

Me too. I don't now her songs from Adam

Nope. Don't believe you. Nobody is that thick that they'd think this a good use of their life.
Nice goady wind up though. I hope it's made your afternoon more bearable.

SwedishEdith · 07/04/2024 16:17

What actual conversation could you have about the Kardashians that isn't judging or taking the piss a bit? And if you're doing it at work, colleagues will overhear and join in.

I'm sorry OP but if that was anything other than ironic, it's just plain sad. Nothing to do with being snobby but you mean less than nothing to them.

I know of them, don't care about them, this thread was in 'trending'. Knock yourself out in your devotion if you like but if you post a thread then expect responses.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 07/04/2024 16:19

Oh, is this just another wind-up? Grin

Can you list some of the other celebrities that you believe people make up not having heard of?
There are some people who are unknown to those of us without Instagram or TikTok.

It’s just like if someone older mentioned someone who was very famous 30 years ago there is a chance you would have heard of them, assuming you are 20/30 something.

Of course I’m winding you up. I didn’t think it was subtle 🙄
