This has thrown me. I’ve just seen a TikTok about it. Obviously not a Peter fan but always just assumed he was a decent good guy. Clearly not. I can never ironic Mysterious Girl again

Is that a joke? What disadvantage do you think they have? Hilarious.

Well, that depends on our class, sexuality and religion possibly. But no, not for being white or male.

GoodfortheGoose · 08/04/2024 17:04

It's bewildering that you can sit there and think there's any comparison at all with actual racism. Shocking really.

Really living up to your name, Sillypede.

Using hyperbole to avoid my very rational and sensible post because you don't have an answer. Even going to the extent of claiming 'fat white men' aren't part of a race.

Racism comes in different severities, as I clearly said. Spare me the outrage, it doesn't mean you can't be challenged.

Then again, claiming to be a fat old white man means you know better than I do, as someone who is none of these things. You're right. Crack on then, for the sake of calling people a gammon online, continue.

You won't win any favours, and considering thy at you self-identify as 'old', it comes across as quite childish andimmature to be so intolerant and resort to name calling those people, even if you fundamentally disagree with certain people's ('gammon's) views.

Not a joke, a serious question. And for the umpteenth time you can't answer it. You're just making an utter fool of yourself.

Do you think it's acceptable for any group of people to be discriminated against?

Bumblebeestiltskin · 08/04/2024 17:18

VeniVidiWeeWee · 06/04/2024 23:21

Tell me, "Karen" is deemed sexist and offensive. Why do you think "gammon" is acceptable?

When the gammons announce themselves 😂

MarjorieOsborne · 08/04/2024 17:14

Do you think it's acceptable for any group of people to be discriminated against?

No one has said it is. It’s always wrong to discriminate. But you can’t discriminate against a group in power.

Sillypede · 08/04/2024 17:24

MarjorieOsborne · 08/04/2024 17:14

Just because your fragility considers something discriminatory, that doesn't make it discrimination. Prejudiced, maybe, but that's not the same.

You can't give equal weight to everything in a stratified society, that's not how either power or language operates. You've had it explained to you repeatedly and rather than counter the arguments you just flip to asking another version of the same question.

If you don’t know what power WHITE MEN have I can’t help you.

I don't think you have to give equal weight to everything do you? But you could object on principal to using ethnicity or skin colour based insults to both groups with more or less power.

Gammon doesn't bother me personally, but I wouldn't use it myself (and I especially wouldn't use it if I was planning to take any kind of moral high ground in a debate against supposed bigoted opponents).

I don't use the term gammon. Fat white men aren't a race. As a fat white Jewish man would probably agree. I've no idea what your hierarchy of racism would like, or what point you think you're making to be honest.

You self-identifying as rational and sensible doesn't really chime with what you've written.

Compare white working class men to black working class men. Who’s more disadvantaged?

It's obviously intersectional because class, ethnicity and sex all have different power relationships in a patriarchal Capitalist system.

Underthinker · 08/04/2024 18:09

I don't use the term gammon. Fat white men aren't a race.

But if there was a term that meant fat Jewish man or fat black man, you presumably wouldn't accept "fat [ethnicity] men aren't a race" as a great defence of the term's use?

No, you don't have to give equal weight to everything, that was my point. The current trend by the alt-right to claim reverse racism is a thing and that it's comparable to actual racism is a joke. I don't tend to call people gammon either, but it's not racist.

If the right had repurposed gammon to wind up Trade Unionists you'd have GBnews arguing that "pig based insults are a traditionally British thing. There's a long history in our culture & literature. Objecting to them is objecting to our history. It's cancel culture from Britain hating snowflakes".

That wasn't my defense. My defense was that it's not racist because of the added weight of history, power & affect of actual racism. It was a response to someone claiming fat white men were a race.

White is not a minority.

White is not a minority.

The laws on racism in this country do not require that the person belongs to a minority ethnic group to be capable of being affected by racist behaviour.

If your basic enough that you use pure numbers to define minority. Tell that to black South Africans.

Not in the UK no. I don't think I said it was. If you were in a country with a black majority would you use the n word?

GoodfortheGoose · 08/04/2024 18:58

What if a black person says something racist to an Asian person, or vice versa? No racism to see here, folks?

Misandry doesn't exist, women can't abuse men either because men had systemic power.

Whether or not you think gammon is racist is one thing, but the idea that racism depends of power is fucking stupid.
