Which just proves the point though doesn't it. The op above thinks a gammon is concerned about poppies and troops. That's a working class trend. You think it applies to those in power. So it doesn't work as an insult it's too broad. It only serves to pretend that these two very disparate groups think the same thing for the same reasons.

Do you think it actually works? As a vegan I regularly get called tofu muncher and woke snowflake etc. at no point does it make me go, you know what actually I will have some bacon, person who insulted me.

If you think your view is sound argue with words not insults. Isn't that why Mumsnet doesn't allow personal comments. All of us are literally on a site that doesn't allow name calling. I believe that the discourse has more.cvance to succeed because of that.

I think you're probably right, it does deflect attention from the real culprits and adds little to political discourse in general.

Sheep maximise their potential by working collaboratively & collectively for the greater good of the flock. Unlike the hedgefund owner at GBEEBIES who leads his flock around by their noses while his mates in finance fill their offshore accounts with the profits from what used to be publicly owned utilities.

Yay, "GBeebies"! There's another childish slur from the tolerant far left. 🙄

If you ever saw Beverly Turner on Jeremy Vine she is frighteningly left wing yet here she is with a regular GB news show . Money over morals then .

From her Wiki page she sounds like a real leftie:

On 1 June 2021, Turner clashed with Dermot O'Leary on This Morning over the issue of COVID-19 vaccines, when she said that it was not effective and urged younger people to refuse the vaccine when offered it. She went on to claim: "It does not stop you catching or passing on the virus." Following this, she was banned from appearing on the programme.[8][9] Controversy continued later on Jeremy Vine, which caused Ofcom to receive hundreds of complaints. She later shared a video of herself crying, claiming she had been "ambushed."[10] On November of the same year she appeared again on the Jeremy Vine programme, in which she clashed with Owen Jones when she compared Austria's lockdown rules for the non-vaccinated to Apartheid.[11]

On 7 February 2022, in the hours after Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer was encircled by protesters[12] yelling "traitor", with references to Jimmy Savile, amongst other things, Turner tweeted to suggest that Starmer was complicit in the incident and that the event was staged.[13] Turner tweeted: "I'm not at all convinced this is a genuine 'ambush.' It perfectly casts Johnson as a Trumpian agitator. (I'm not condoning his Savile comment. It was stupid). But Starmer does not look scared. Yelling about 'Freemasons' was brainstormed in a board room! Why walk so far?! Staged."

Amidst the July 2022 United Kingdom heat wave, in a conversation with BBC's meteorologist John Hammond, she said "I want us to be happy about the weather, and I don’t know if something has happened to meteorologists to make you all a little bit fatalistic and harbingers of doom, but broadcasters – particularly on the BBC – every time I’ve turned on, anyone is talking about the weather and they’re saying there’s going to be tons of fatalities, but haven't we always had hot weather, John?" in a moment that was compared to the film Don't Look Up.[14][15] On her Twitter account, she has expressed her opinion about the extreme heat warnings, calling them "weather-fear porn"[16] and "climate lockdown."[17]

In July 2023, a leading Jewish group criticised Turner for spreading a "dangerous conspiracy theory" after she tweeted that the COVID-19virus appeared to have been bioengineered to be less dangerous to some Jewish people.[18]
in September 2023, when allegations about Russell Brand's abuse and sexual assault of women were made public by Channel 4'sDispatches programme, Turner defended Brand on Twitter and clashed with Andrew Pierce live on GB News.[19][20] Turner responded to Pierce's branding of her dismissal of the alleged victims' testimonies as "shameful" by claiming she had been in contact with several sources "close to Brand [and] close to The Times" which had led her to believe the allegations to be "flimsy."[21]

But this is what the left wing do. Froth at the mouth that people dare have an opinion different to their own, and then resort to name calling because they actually lack the intelligence to put forward any meaningful and rational argument. And for this reason you really can’t debate with a left winger.

100% correct.

The theme!? A profile littered with ‘protect the poppy’ ‘rehouse our veterans not boat people’ type images, memes and comments.

Usually an image of a fallen soldier as their cover image and some weird quote about how they died for our freedom. With a weird and also very obvious overlay to their main image, usually something against Sam smith or ‘protect our children’

What's wrong with the poppy and housing our own people first, if in your view that makes me racist then I don't really care. Soldiers in the 1st and 2nd world wars did fight for our freedom. As for Sam Smith, I like his music but I think he's an attention seeking twat and his latest videos aren't suitable for children.

Oh, and first prize for the most ironic username in internet history goes to the OP.

QueenMegan · 07/04/2024 11:34

I have read the whole thread and still not got a clue what you mean.
He's a vacuous prat we all know that.
What's a gammon

BusyMummy001 · 07/04/2024 11:35

Goodness - GBNews is just a news/current affairs channel.

I quite like the fact that I know up front that there is a rightward lean to many of the programmes as I put the appropriate filter on and critically think as I watch. BBC etc are less obviously as they claim to be neutral so, frankly, you have to work harder to unpick it. Not that I watch much on GBN at all.

That said, there are many very centrist/liberal presenters - I am a regular watching Andrew Doyle/Free Speech Nation viewer - so it’s not totally right-wing, anyway. Won’t be watching Peter Andre, though, as not into vacuous celebs, just as I don’t watch John Cleese - as much as I’ve liked him as a comedian/writer/performer, I wouldn’t go to him for an op ed on many current affairs issues.

Good heavens! This thread has been a wild ride and very instructive. Didn’t Beverley Turner used to be a fairly innocuous tv presenter? I knew (the previously seemingly lovely) Neil Oliver had gone rogue, but that little Aussie poppet Holly Valance, a Tate fan? I feel like it’s only a matter of time before someone comes with evidence that the PP comment re Alan Titchmarsh wasn’t just a jape, and he really is a fascist.

Otherstories2002 · 07/04/2024 11:40

Sillypede · 07/04/2024 10:54

Even if it does, that doesn't make it racist and I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be offensive. Are you saying people have a right not to be offended?

I’m saying fat white men aren’t a group I care a dot about.

DrBlackbird · 07/04/2024 11:42

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. But I was trying to point out the hypocrisy in those that use terms like; libtard, woke, safespaces, triggered etc as insults tend to react to the term gammon by apparently being so triggered, offended, claim it's racist (it clearly isn't) etc that they appear to want to do what they claim to oppose.

Thank you for clarifying your point. I’ve never heard of the term gammon as insult. I got it, but then I too was confused by your further explanation of It also works quite well in exposing the hypocrisy in those that get "triggered" by its use, the type that complain about having their language censored, safe-spaces, the perpetually offended, the PC brigade etc. As I could not figure out why a white angry conservative racist (as per the pejorative gammon) would complain about safe spaces. Re language censorship, I’m assuming that you mean Gammon type people complain about their racist sexist comments now being censored?

However, it’s also interesting, and not a little alarming, to me that the centre / far left have progressed from the necessary work of criticising harmful language to the point now where they censor both language and ideas such that some terms and subjects are never permitted to be mentioned or discussed. Nor even researched. And I can say quite confidently that I witness this frequently in my university setting.

The existence of GB News, which admittedly I’ve never watched, is both possible due to, and seems to me to have emerged from, this mission creep of the left’s censorship. Maybe it would’ve always happened? But we’re in a precarious place now where freedom of expression is under attack from both left and right and yet is a foundation of democracy.

MeDaughterMerope · 07/04/2024 11:44

Oh and just for the record, many people don't like Sam smith because he got rid of female category in music awards.
And that's fair.

I usually find with GB News presenters, when you look into them; either they have those kind of extremist views, or are just Tory MPs or Tory journalists (Andrew Pierce) or ex-Tory politicians (Portillo) and they're all pro-Brexit (of course Farage has his own show). There's little in the way of plurality of opinions. Some are just less extreme.

Let's say that's true. What do you hope to gain by insults?

SoIf · 07/04/2024 11:55

So if gammon face is reserved for your typical, centre right Brit who gets frustrated at all the wokeness...what term do we use for the intolerant left winger who equally gets frustrated at the gammons?

red cabbage face? beetroot-infused lentil face?

ie look at Peter Andre getting all the red cabbages (or beetroot infused lentils) fuming.

Does the insult go both ways?

dollybird · 07/04/2024 12:02

Shabnamsshoos · 07/04/2024 10:39

I really hope you’re not trying to find any kind of equivalence between the N word and gammon. That’s offensive in itself. Get a grip.

Not at all, just stating that just because a term that might or might not be offensive isn't a real person's name, doesn't mean it's not offensive.

SoreAndTired1 · 07/04/2024 12:10

Laughattheloons · 06/04/2024 23:57

It’s pretty simple folks. Peter Andre is on GB News and I was shocked by this as always assumed he was a good guy. No attention seeking or clickbait here. Thread just doing what it says on the tin.

And? So? @Laughattheloons GB News is the only channel talking about the ongoing removal of women and girls human rights. So it can't be that bad a channel.

Yay, "GBeebies"! There's another childish slur from the tolerant far left. 🙄

I can't speak for 'the left' but personally I'm not tolerant of right-wing propaganda channels. There's sound historical reasoning underpinning that approach, nothing to do with 'hurty feelings'.

MeDaughterMerope · 07/04/2024 12:11

I'm interested to know what they think they achieve when they use insults to virtue signal.

I wonder, because of I'm honest with myself I used to use gammon a lot either when I was out of my depth or someone was being unpleasant to me first.

I don't do it any more because I realised I was doing it to make myself feel virtuous and that it only heightens and inflamed differences.

As a hot headed redhead I'm getting there but I don't appreciate being insulted and assume that's what it feels like if I dish it out.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 07/04/2024 12:12

Pickledf · 07/04/2024 10:55

Many on this thread have indeed got annoyed about the term being used.

There was even a large scale petition started (by a gammon) to have the word designated as a racist term so could be included in hate crime laws. When you click the images of the people who shared said petition there was a theme

The evidence of your own lack of critical thinking is painfully obvious from that post.
