This has thrown me. I’ve just seen a TikTok about it. Obviously not a Peter fan but always just assumed he was a decent good guy. Clearly not. I can never ironic Mysterious Girl again

Ha. No it’s not.

Even if it does, that doesn't make it racist and I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be offensive. Are you saying people have a right not to be offended?

Pickledf · 07/04/2024 10:55

Marchintospring · 07/04/2024 10:52

I don't think Gammons do get annoyed by the word itself do they.

It's more that the people calling them that get very upset by the idea of stereotyping people but then happily trot them out as insults themselves.

Many on this thread have indeed got annoyed about the term being used.

There was even a large scale petition started (by a gammon) to have the word designated as a racist term so could be included in hate crime laws. When you click the images of the people who shared said petition there was a theme

Yeah listening to some excerpts from a recent interview from Holly was terrifying.

Saying how bad it was for Andrew Tate to be locked up, and calling Greta a demonic troll or something like that - no a gremlin.

Not sure how it can ever be a good look to defend Tate and demonise Greta

Holly Valance's husband is a property developer billionaire. Stands to reason she would align with the hedgefund billionaire funded GB News.

TellingIy · 07/04/2024 10:56

Pickledf · 07/04/2024 08:37

Anyone who accepts money to regularly go on GB news is not left wing, progressive, or a good person

That is a basic fact

Accepting money, appearing on, and promoting a channel that as a whole is designed to push a far right agenda is not something a ‘prpgressive person’ or anyone who was truly left wing would do.

The fact his alternate twitter account (that he denied for a long time was him btw) was banned multiple times for hate speech, the fact he hosts a show on GB news and promotes the channel in general directly counters every positive thing you’ve said about the man.

The fact you happily tune in for his show, bolstering the viewing figures and supporting the channel is not very left wing of you either.

The daily mail sometimes have journalists that are aligned with normal people’s thinking, what most decent people do though isn’t to buy the paper or log in online to read it because the operation as a whole is negative, and they don’t wish to support it financially.

You are definitely the kind of person who loves the smell of their own farts 💨

AutumnCrow · 07/04/2024 10:57

Yes but Peter Andre really loves the Sussexes.

He is also a Tory donor

So it makes sense why, I was just personally a bit surprised - felt like the tone of her interview came a bit out of left field

It was terrifying how she described how she advocates for her sons to watch Andrew Tate because he has proven himself to prevent male suicide

MeDaughterMerope · 07/04/2024 10:53

Because op and others judge reading or watching certain medias.
Some media sets itself up to cater for those who find literacy challenging. That doesn't make you or the op superior because you consume other media.
Left wing rags generally use more challenging language. If you want people to explore both sides this is the way to do it. Not shouting that they're gammons.

But this is what the left wing do. Froth at the mouth that people dare have an opinion different to their own, and then resort to name calling because they actually lack the intelligence to put forward any meaningful and rational argument. And for this reason you really can’t debate with a left winger.

Well be explicit. What was the theme? Was it one you could tell my reading their views or one you assumed because of the way they look.

As far as I know being a man, bald and overweight are not crimes in themselves.

I know. Hence no name calling is ok.

GN News is designed to give a voice to people not stuck in a woke permanently offended cycle. It’s for ppl who can see a difference of opinion and be ok with that and not assume that person is now the devil incarnate.

Sure. Its viewers are the most intelligent non-bigoted critical-thinkers of our time 😏

The theme!? A profile littered with ‘protect the poppy’ ‘rehouse our veterans not boat people’ type images, memes and comments.

Usually an image of a fallen soldier as their cover image and some weird quote about how they died for our freedom. With a weird and also very obvious overlay to their main image, usually something against Sam smith or ‘protect our children’

Sheep maximise their potential by working collaboratively & collectively for the greater good of the flock. Unlike the hedgefund owner at GBEEBIES who leads his flock around by their noses while his mates in finance fill their offshore accounts with the profits from what used to be publicly owned utilities.

During the pandemic it was the conspiracy theorist thickos who used to berate ‘sheeple’ for getting the vaccine.

MeDaughterMerope · 07/04/2024 11:04

Right. And do you think the way to challenge and engage them in those views is to call them gammon?

Hartley99 · 07/04/2024 11:04

Have you ever watched GB News? It isn't 'right-wing' at all. In fact, half the presenters seem to be left-wing. Andrew Doyle supported Corbyn ffs. Just because some people don't want open borders, or don't believe that the boatloads of young men who keep crossing the channel are "poor frightened refugees," or don't believe that British history is evil and disgusting, that doesn't mean they're right-wing. I'm sick of that phrase. It's meaningless. It's now used to describe anyone who doesn't mindlessly regurgitate liberal-left views on everything. Some people are individualists who actually think for themselves. Outrageous isn't it!

Yeah, that seems a bit much. Must have gone from being naturally conservative leaning to down a rabbit hole of hard right grifters like Tate.

Indeed. The lack of self awareness by some posters is quite astonishing but one should never underestimate the capacity for intolerance of certain left wingers.

Doyle is on for anti-woke sentiment which is part of the channel's core message (and i'm more sympathetic to than the economic agendas of the likes of Rees Mogg and the channels main funder).

The politicians on there are very right wing (Farage, Rees Mogg, Daubney, Anderson) and usually ardent brexiteers They've gone for one reason or another but the likes of Wooton, Lawrence Fox, Calvin Robinson, Andrew Neil all very much on the right and big Brexit backers. There isn't much plurality of views on the channel really.

I’ve never thought that ‘gammon’ implied you were necessarily working class. I understand it as a description of a man with reactionary right wing views going red in the face with anger. This could as easily be Nigel in his mustard cords as Gary in his England shirt. I don’t believe this group of people is a ‘race’ but name calling of any description is absolutely not helpful for political discourse.

When I hear ‘gammon’ I think of David Cameron and his cronies. Don’t think he is working class…

Which just proves the point though doesn't it. The op above thinks a gammon is concerned about poppies and troops. That's a working class trend. You think it applies to those in power. So it doesn't work as an insult it's too broad. It only serves to pretend that these two very disparate groups think the same thing for the same reasons.

Do you think it actually works? As a vegan I regularly get called tofu muncher and woke snowflake etc. at no point does it make me go, you know what actually I will have some bacon, person who insulted me.

If you think your view is sound argue with words not insults. Isn't that why Mumsnet doesn't allow personal comments. All of us are literally on a site that doesn't allow name calling. I believe that the discourse has more.cvance to succeed because of that.

No. It's because it's funded by a hedgefund manager who wants the NHS replaced by a more expensive private healthcare system, our manufacturing done in Asia, Higher Education limited to those from wealthy backgrounds, employment rights removed, our human rights weakened and for his class to stay in power whatever government we elect.

I don’t think insults are ever used to effect change in behaviour. When I get called the P word, I don’t think anyone expects me to change my race. Insults make the person saying them feel better briefly, esp if they get a negative reaction. I can’t see that ever changing.
