Reporting someone about having no TV LIcence?

WhiteDragon66 · 06/04/2024 21:39

At the moment I am living in an HMO. I have lived here for coming up to three years now.
I have a licence. However I have noticed that two of the residents within the household have been receiving letters from TV LIcensing for quite a long time now.
There are six of us all together living here. I think that I am the only one who is licensed though?
Would I be right in reporting just these two individuals, do you think, or should I just simply ignore this??
Any feedback would be really very helpful. Thank you.

Yeh right

GremlinsHemluns · 07/04/2024 11:09

Lots of misunderstanding about what is covered by a TV licence, it isn't just the BBC, or certain channels, its needed to watch or record anything live on any channel or streaming service.

So e.g watching Sky news live, you need a TV licence. Watching a live steam on YouTube you need a TV licence, you don't need one to watch prerecorded videos on YouTube

https://www.gov.uk/find-licences/tv-licence

TV Licence - GOV.UK

You need a TV Licence to watch or record programmes on a TV, computer or other device as they're broadcast, and to watch on-demand BBC programmes on iPlayer

The licence is to watch bbc channels only

Incorrect.

My god so many idiots on this thread.
You don't need a TV license if you have a TV, you only need it if you watch live TV channels or BBC.
We have a TV but watch YouTube, Disney plus, amazon prime so don't need a license.
Also yabu it's none of your business.

It's not that people are idiots, but that threads are always including information that is incorrect but has been reported so often, that believe it to be true.

And yes, people should actually check out the TV licencing website and Gov. site but many, many people don't and MN and many MN posters are constantly telling the public and posters what a fantastic hive of education and information it is so incorrect info gets repeated and becomes fact when it isn't.

And also, you're correct you don't need a TV licence just for having a TV, but only if you use certain services but you do need one even if you don't have a TV at all but use those services from a laptop or even a 'phone or any device.

Because that's another myth perpetuated "I don't have a TV at all, just watch stuff on my 'phone or laptop so don't need a TV licence".

And yes, you're right it applies to BBC iplayer and watching live TV on any service but it also applies to recording live TV on any service to watch later. Because that's another myth "we don't watch live TV, DH records the footie on Sky to watch later so we don't need a TV licence" - TV licence still needed.

And also applies to watching anything live on YouTube, but not to pre-recorded videos. A lot of people think TV licencing doesn't apply to YouTube at all, but it does if you're watching "join us for a live q and a at 8pm" - TV licence needed.

No, don’t report them. Women are already disproportionately targeted for legal action for license fee evasion, don’t add to the sexism.

@bellezarara

what are you on about?

they could be make for all you know.

We have never paid ours, in multiple homes. We just ignore the letters.

And we watch ALL the channels, live and on demand.

@Adelant

its nothing to boast about. You're watching at our expense.

Women often live with women. Only OP knows, who has long since gone.

Why so aggressive?

WhamBamThankU · 06/04/2024 22:30

Petty AF! I do t pay mine cos none of us watch live tv. The price is crazy for such shite content.

@WhamBamThankU

i think a lot of people watch more of the 'licence required' tv than they realise, there's a lot included in it, not just scheduled TV.

IncompleteSenten · 07/04/2024 12:55

I'd ignore it.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 07/04/2024 13:04

JanglingJack · 07/04/2024 00:21

Yes absolutely report them and turn your volume up loud whilst watching BBC live.

Are you gutted that you are paying yours like a mug? Jealous that they are not?

Just mind your own.

@JanglingJack

i don't consider myself a mug to pay for a service I use.

no different than paying a fare to use the train. On my line I could probably get away with not paying, but I don't because I'm not a twat, who thinks It makes me a mug.

OneCornetto · 06/04/2024 21:44

You don't have to have a tv licence. Mine was due in January and we've decided not to renew it for six months as the only live tv we watched was BBC breakfast.

Then we will catch up on any programmes we want to watch on the bbc when we renew it.

Allegedly

if you use a burner email such as burner@gmail (or similar)

and put a fake address etc into iplayer

it stops the bbc tracing accounts that don’t have a tv licence

😇

mitogoshi · 07/04/2024 13:14

If you watch bbc (including iPlayer) or other live tv you are in effect stealing if you don't have a licence. So yes i would report thieves but only if they were actually stealing which several posters here are bragging that they are!

BBC has the best tv by far, we struggle to find much on Netflix that isn't old tv or movies (I do watch a couple of films a week but it's not the same as proper tv). It may be an unusual thing to admit these days but we put the tv on to see what on!

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 07/04/2024 13:16

You want to report to TV licencing....that you've noticed them getting letters from TV licencing?

🤔

dimllaishebiaith · 07/04/2024 13:21

Unless you have somehow managed to get proof they are watching something they shouldnt be what are you reporting them for?

I get those letters. I don't have a TV licence. Im not watching anything that requires one.

Quite 😂

I get statements from TVL all the time. In envelopes with “TV Licensing” on the front because I’m on a payment plan.

Luckily my postman hasn’t decided he needs to report me to someone

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 07/04/2024 13:34

I canceled it years ago when I realised that I'd been paying for it for god knows how long and no one was watching any live TV

They came round once and tried to catch me out but haven't heard from them since

And I had no interest in watching the queen's funeral , don't know why some people think everyone must have been interested in that

CheeryPye · 07/04/2024 13:36

Firecarrier · 06/04/2024 21:48

It is an immoral tax on poor people. Ignore it.

This. We don't need more people pandering to government propaganda encouraging us to grass each other up. All the time they have us all turning on eachother like this they are doing far worse things that have real impact on our lives while we are all so busy bitching at eachother for not having a TV licence that we don't notice our own civil liberties slowly being removed from us. 'Look over there! Look over there! Don't look over here at what we are doing!'

What exactly do you think is going to happen if you report them ?
The TV licencing people already know there isn't a licence hence the letter ,s
The most they can so is send round an " investigating officer"
Who has no power of entry ,and the householdre doesn't even have to open the door to them.

SmileyClare · 07/04/2024 15:37

I’m wondering if I should cancel my TVL now!

I was told when I didn’t pay it, that if I had any devices that could access BBCiplayer (even if I didn’t watch it or have the app downloaded?) I would have to pay.

Its certainly outdated and perhaps the BBC should use advertising and sponsorship to fund themselves or lock it down and offer a pay to view subscription like every other tv platform.

PotatoPudding · 07/04/2024 15:41

Are you 100% certain they are watching broadcast television or iPlayer? If they don’t watch either of those, they are under no obligation to purchase a TV licence.

You know you won’t get in any trouble for not grassing them up, right? Also, they’re your housemates, which means you’d have to live people you’ve grassed up.

VestibuleVirgin · 07/04/2024 15:42

Jovacknockowitch · 07/04/2024 11:12
