Reporting someone about having no TV LIcence?

WhiteDragon66 · 06/04/2024 21:39

At the moment I am living in an HMO. I have lived here for coming up to three years now.
I have a licence. However I have noticed that two of the residents within the household have been receiving letters from TV LIcensing for quite a long time now.
There are six of us all together living here. I think that I am the only one who is licensed though?
Would I be right in reporting just these two individuals, do you think, or should I just simply ignore this??
Any feedback would be really very helpful. Thank you.

Why would you do this?

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 06/04/2024 21:52

People who declare that they don't need a licence are often still bombarded with these letters. People who pay their licence fee are also still bombarded with the letters sometimes. They are generic letters produced through an automated system that doesnt work very well. I used to work for them.

I can't believe you monitor other people's mail tho!

DetOliviaBenson · 06/04/2024 21:53

@ButtockUp yes Netflix at £4.99 per month is so expensive isn't it? Really, only those who are super rich should have it.

GOT1996 · 06/04/2024 21:53

Have you seriously not got anything better to do?

Adelant · 06/04/2024 21:53

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 06/04/2024 21:45

I'm normally on the side of doing everything right but TV Licence, nope, I wouldn't report. I have mine but hate having to pay it but not bra e enough not to.

We have never paid ours, in multiple homes. We just ignore the letters.

And we watch ALL the channels, live and on demand.

DetOliviaBenson · 06/04/2024 21:54

No money, no programnes, no radio.

@PassingStranger what do you mean by this?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 06/04/2024 21:54

If there is any sort of communal space, even a hallway, one of them can put their TV in there and then it is free for anyone to view and watch however they like, because it will be covered by your Licence OP.

But I suspect you'd probably have an issue with that anyway.

OneCornetto · 06/04/2024 21:55

But so many 'poor' people will happily pay for Netflix or Sky Sports' or AppleTV?'

But maybe they want those things. You can't have Sky without a licence but the others you can,

The way TV licensing writes those threatening letters is scandalous. They lie, pressure and scare people into paying for something they don't use.

They deliberately make it difficult to find out how to opt out of having a licence when you don't need one and even when you do opt out you still get the letters.

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 06/04/2024 21:56

Just stop paying yours.

Adelant · 06/04/2024 21:58

ButtockUp · 06/04/2024 21:49

Because they want to watch those things. The BBC has been irrelevant for me for years.

alexdgr8 · 06/04/2024 21:59

Louise0808 · 06/04/2024 21:46

Unless they watch or record live TV they don't need one. I havent had one for coming up 2 years now. Ignore it.

i believe you need one to watch any bbc tv, whether live or not.

ButtockUp · 06/04/2024 22:03

It’s responses like your’s that make me wonder just how many BBC programmes are actually watched by tv licence avoiders.
Bet you turned to the BBC when the Queen died. Not that you’ll admit it.

MummaMummaJumma · 06/04/2024 22:04

OP, just leave it. Stop paying yours too, it’s an absolute rip off.

Renamed · 06/04/2024 22:04

I have a license and I still get these letters. They are computer generated as everyone knows. I can’t believe that a real person would be actually asking this question

Friend2023 · 06/04/2024 22:05

I live in a block of flats but our landlord has his business underneath us. It's coded to get into our staircase and no one can get to our flats unless the landlord or a tenant opens the door.

No way am I paying for a license (I don't watch TV anyway , prob once a month I might watch something)
But I don't get why people in our block pays it when you won't have them knocking the door.

So no I wouldn't report this . I would join them and not pay either . If you can't beat them join them.

suki1964 · 06/04/2024 22:05

OP, what are you actually hoping to achieve by "reporting: these people?

Do they need a licience?

I don't have a licence, cant remember the last time I did - want to grass me up?

Not every one needs a licence, as long as you dont watch tv live or the iplayer you dont need one and believe me theres plenty of content on Nextflix, prime, ITVx,.STV, UKdrama etc etc etc

They finally stopped sending me demanding letters about 10 years ago

Growuppeople · 06/04/2024 22:14

Ignore and Concentrate on your own life!

Ilovemyshed · 06/04/2024 22:19

bellezarara · 06/04/2024 21:44

No, don’t report them. Women are already disproportionately targeted for legal action for license fee evasion, don’t add to the sexism.

What has gender got to do with the OP?!

Am sure Netflix costs more than this.

Also can’t believe the vitriol against the BBC- there is a vast wealth of content across TV radio, and online. It’s an amazing resource, and sets a benchmark for quality.

it means all the other broadcasters have to compete at that level and so, all our channels and our news programmes are better as a result.

I often wonder if people have seen how shit foreign telly is?

The best content is made in the US and they definitely don’t even think about the BBC let alone compete with it.

The benchmarking argument is old and tired in a world with multiple steaming apps.

Why should I pay for you to watch BBC TV?

Thepeopleversuswork · 06/04/2024 22:22

That’s petty to the point of vindictiveness. Benefit fraud yes. TV livence? Get a life.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 06/04/2024 22:24

The vitriol against the BBC mostly comes from them hiding a predator within their organisation for many years.

An ‘open secret’ apparently.

They should be closed down. Disgusted.

Thepeopleversuswork · 06/04/2024 22:24

@Wagonwheelforme

Its not “vitriol against the BBC” it’s just astonishment that anyone could be so nosy and petty.

There is a cheap Netflix at £4.99 with ads which is SD picture and you can't download so ok if you watch very occasionally, the normal HD Netflix is £10.99 with no ads

PossumintheHouse · 06/04/2024 22:25

Pretty sure Netflix is around £10.99 a month now.

Anyway, warning letters about TV licenses are send to basically every household nowadays, if they haven't paid up. Some don't have a TV, some don't watch live TV, and others are evading the cost. How do you know which category your neighbours fall under? Why start shit stirring?
