Reporting someone about having no TV LIcence?

WhiteDragon66 · 06/04/2024 21:39

At the moment I am living in an HMO. I have lived here for coming up to three years now.
I have a licence. However I have noticed that two of the residents within the household have been receiving letters from TV LIcensing for quite a long time now.
There are six of us all together living here. I think that I am the only one who is licensed though?
Would I be right in reporting just these two individuals, do you think, or should I just simply ignore this??
Any feedback would be really very helpful. Thank you.

I love the BBC and thing the licence fee is incredible value, but even I wouldn't attempt to shop people you think should be paying and aren't.

Keep your beak out of other people's business.

OneCornetto · 06/04/2024 22:28

I don't have vitriol against the BBC but I think the way the licensing is run is a disgrace.

It also infuriates me that there is so much content that the BBC has that they don't have on iplayer.

I had a three months free no advert subscription to ITV and there is so much stuff on there that is made by the BBC.

I have lived abroad, I lived in Australia for a decade and the TV was absolutely shit.

SpecialOPs · 06/04/2024 22:29

I have recently got a letter about TV licensing. Have never not had one.

We have TV’s that we can watch Netflix and Amazon on and never watch the BBC unless I hear about a series that sounds good.

You need to get a life OP. Can’t imagine wanting to report someone when you don’t even know if they need one.

Took the words right out of my mouth there. I'm happy to pay the licence fee and I like a lot of BBC output, but reporting people for suspected non-payment is gruesomely vindictive and petty.

BobnLen · 06/04/2024 22:29

It's the Labour Party though that will carry on with the TV licence.

WhamBamThankU · 06/04/2024 22:30

Petty AF! I do t pay mine cos none of us watch live tv. The price is crazy for such shite content.

Ohfgswhat · 06/04/2024 22:30

Don't be silly! You'll feel a fool.

Alltheparmesanplease · 06/04/2024 22:32

Why would it be right to report someone and get them onto trouble when it has no effect on you whatsoever?

Genuinely curious why you feel you should report them? What will it achieve?

You need to mind your own business and live and let live!

fliptopbin · 06/04/2024 22:32

Ever since I bought my mum a freeview box donkeys years ago, I get yearly letters saying that I need to have a separate licence for it. Our family's licence is in my name, the box was registered to my mum who also has a licence, yet I get threatening letters telling me I need a second licence every year because...no human I have spoken to has any idea. Every year I get the stroppy letter and every year I am assured that the error has been corrected, but this has been going on for 15 years!

Am sure Netflix costs more than this.

Also can’t believe the vitriol against the BBC- there is a vast wealth of content across TV radio, and online. It’s an amazing resource, and sets a benchmark for quality.

it means all the other broadcasters have to compete at that level and so, all our channels and our news programmes are better as a result.

I often wonder if people have seen how shit foreign telly is?

The cheapest Netflix package is £4.99 per month.

Is there a reason people should be forced to support the BBC when they don't want to? I don't have a TV Licence, don't watch live TV (don't have the means to).

Even without paying for a streaming service, there is a wealth of programming for free on ITVX, All4 and 5 on demand, plus YouTube!

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 06/04/2024 22:52

If you like BBC pay it. But leave everyone else alone. Report murders and stuff sure.

Wagonwheelforme · 06/04/2024 22:52

Adelant · 06/04/2024 22:22

The best content is made in the US and they definitely don’t even think about the BBC let alone compete with it.

The benchmarking argument is old and tired in a world with multiple steaming apps.

Why should I pay for you to watch BBC TV?

Edited

Because what the BBC provides goes beyond entertainment. The news is the most reliable and accurate source in a world where people make up random shit on the internet. ( that doesn’t mean BBC news isn’t fallible)

Just look at all the crap about princess of Wales.

look where multiple streaming apps/ news content/ social media has got us. The world is hugely divided because everyone just gets news in their own echo chamber. We need balanced and accurate news more than ever.

The content in US is excellent, but if you watch it on US TV, you’ll be interrupted every 5 minutes with adverts.

Hahaha exactly!

BobnLen · 06/04/2024 22:55

The cheaper streaming packages are practically unwatchable with the ads though, I paid the extra for ad removal as ITVx was particularly bad so they are not that cheap

PossumintheHouse · 06/04/2024 22:25

Pretty sure Netflix is around £10.99 a month now.

Anyway, warning letters about TV licenses are send to basically every household nowadays, if they haven't paid up. Some don't have a TV, some don't watch live TV, and others are evading the cost. How do you know which category your neighbours fall under? Why start shit stirring?

Nope, £4.99 with ads.

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 06/04/2024 22:57

Seriously??? Mind your own business

I actually think the BBC should be funded wholly through taxpayers and the equivalent cash from license should just be added to tax.

that way people who genuinely can’t afford it, won’t pay.

I think a free and independent media is a cornerstone of a democratic society. Without the BBC, we struggle to maintain that.

you may as well say ‘why should I pay for a court system because I don’t use it or need it?’
or
‘why should I pay for NHS because I never get sick?’

or
’ why should I pay for education? I don’t have kids and never went to school myself’

BobbyBiscuits · 06/04/2024 23:00

How do you know they own a television? If they are disabled or elderly they could be exempt, but it's their own affair.
Living in an HMO is shit enough, without harassing your flatmates for violations that do not affect you in any way, and they are already receiving letters about.
Would you like them to snoop your post then contemplate contacting your correspondents regarding your un-proven 'behaviour'?

Emptyheadlock · 06/04/2024 23:05

Get a life you absolute saddo.

DahliaMacNamara · 06/04/2024 23:06

Last letter I had from BBC licensing was about my licence. Have you read the letters? If they're about the absence of a licence, then I guess they already know. It's not up to you to determine whether the licensing authorities are correct. They frequently aren't.

Copperoliverbear · 06/04/2024 23:14

Mind your own business, you have yours don't worry about others

glittercunt · 06/04/2024 23:15

Jesus H. Christ.

You don't report anyone for this.

Also, loads of people get the letters despite having one. Has happened to me at more than one address, and it's happened to friends and I've read about it.

Hope you're not someone I know in real life. We have a license, I just really wouldn't want to know you.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 06/04/2024 23:18

Why shouldn't I work cash in hand to avoid paying for other people's education, NHS, benefits payments.

On most of the replies above, I should.
