Husband wats to book a camel ride on holiday next week.
I'm feeling that I am too heavy to go on a camel.
AIBU to think that?

It is probably worth checking the weight limit. Even if that particular trip doesn’t mention one just look it up.

beccahamlet · 06/04/2024 19:33

I think 15 stone is ok. Top end, but ok. Enjoy .

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 06/04/2024 19:33

While there isn't a specific weight limit for camel riding, it is advisable to adhere to general guidelines. Typically, riders are recommended to weigh no more than 220 pounds. Children are often permitted to ride camels, provided they meet the appropriate weight and height requirements.

MummyFriend · 06/04/2024 19:34

I personally don't think it's fair on the poor camel, but then I think that about any adult on one!

Theoriginalmrscillianmurphy · 06/04/2024 19:36

Don't think it would be nice for the animal, sorry

BobbyBiscuits · 06/04/2024 19:36

They are beasts of burden by definition in their own culture, they can carry quite a bit.
But I hope there's some sort of welfare certificate or something that you can check when booking it, as I know some can be abused for profit.

jennywren08 · 06/04/2024 19:37

Camels can carry heavy loads over long distances. They are valued for that ability.

If it's a reputable owner/organisation, they will ensure that the camel only carries suitable loads.

MissingMoominMamma · 06/04/2024 19:37

The camels’ legs are usually chained. It’s a horrible activity for them.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 06/04/2024 19:37

I'd want assurance the camels were well-treated.

Berlinlover · 06/04/2024 19:38

I’m 9st 1lb and would feel bad sitting on a camel.

IncognitoUsername · 06/04/2024 19:39

If you do decide to go, please research the company thoroughly. Many of these animals are treated badly. We decided to cancel a swamp boat ride excursion in Florida as I discovered how bad the boats are for the wildlife and ecosystem.

HoldingTheDoor · 06/04/2024 19:39

The camels are often treated terribly and cruelly trained. Your weight is the least of the issues regarding tourists going on camel rides.

Kissmystarfish · 06/04/2024 19:40

No way. I wouldn’t ever ride an animal for fun abroad.

the uk yes. Abroad no no way.

AtrociousCircumstance · 06/04/2024 19:40

Too heavy for the poor creature yes.

Offredismysister · 06/04/2024 19:40

Why would you at any weight?
Why do you want to, what’s the appeal?
It’s animal cruelty.

Moveoverdarlin · 06/04/2024 19:41

Too heavy.

Brendabigbaps · 06/04/2024 19:42

Depends what sort of camel ride.
if it’s the 2 man seat then yeah, but then pretty much anyone is too heavy for those when you get 2 people on it.

HoldingTheDoor · 06/04/2024 19:42

I don’t know where you’re planning on riding a camel but this is the reality of it(and also applies to horses and donkeys) in Egypt and some other countries.

Kind Tourists Are Staying Away From Camel Rides in Egypt

Find out why kind tourists are starting to avoid camel rides at the Great Pyramids in Giza, Egypt. Stay informed on why you should too.

angel1977 · 06/04/2024 19:42

Too heavy and cruel too. Camels are terribly abused, dont do it.

Princesspollyyy · 06/04/2024 19:46

We rode camels in Dubai and I instantly regretted it. The camels legs were indeed chained, and they didn't seem happy at all. One did not want to stand up and the guy in charge of them seemed horrible in his treatment of the camel in getting it to stand.

I wish I had backed down and said no now. It wasn't enjoyable at all.

StripeyDeckchair · 06/04/2024 19:46

I did a camel ride many years ago & would never do one again.
The process of going down & getting up again so a person can get on/off is painful for them.
They are unpredictable
They can bolt
They smell
They kick up loads of dust which covers the rider

On my trip one camel bolted, the rider fell off & was knocked unconscious, we were in the desert & when she came round it was either get back on or walk.
Leading a camel is shit too - they spit & bite.
We camped in the desert & the group flat out refused to ride camels out & 4WDs came in to get us.

Icantbedoingwithit · 06/04/2024 19:46

Yes you are too heavy plus it’s a horrible practice. Surely you can find something more constructive to do.

effoffwind · 06/04/2024 19:47

I'm so glad we are more aware of the maltreatment of animals abroad
Elephant rides , camels , dolphin shows , zoos , monkey pics .. all things we used to do merrily but not anymore

Isittimeformynapyet · 06/04/2024 19:47

I have changed my vote from yabu to Yanbu after actually reading the thread.

Princesspollyyy · 06/04/2024 19:48

Maybe research it a bit and then you can educate your husband as to why it's not a great thing to be doing on holiday.
