camel ride when I weigh 15stone

KathySeldon · 06/04/2024 19:32

Husband wats to book a camel ride on holiday next week.
I'm feeling that I am too heavy to go on a camel.
AIBU to think that?

OP posts:
Lucy377 · 07/04/2024 13:14

Plenty of men weigh more than 15 stone.
Are they not doing the camel rides?

Some people here are so flaming horrible.

It is possible to make a statement about animal cruelty without belittling another human being.

'Human cruelty' is when you are emotionally abusive to other humans.

I've never, nor would, l go on a donkey or camel ride (or elephants, in fact) on holiday.
They're not treated well at all, poor things.
Just me, but no, I wouldn't. Regardless of my weight.

Yes this is me too.

fieldsofbutterflies · 07/04/2024 13:56

AlwaysGinPlease · 07/04/2024 12:43

You're far too heavy but anyway, why would you participate in such abuse? These animals are treated terribly. Sickening that anyone would think this is ok.

Camels are beasts of burden and capable of carrying much more than 15 stone.

The ethics/animal cruelty side of things is valid, but all these unpleasant comments about OP's weight are both wrong and unnecessary.

Cherrysoup · 07/04/2024 13:56

Shit idea. No idea what camels weigh, but the rule for horses is no more than 20% of the horse’s weight, but I personally wouldn’t let anyone over about 12st get on mine, despite that he could technically take more. The area your arse is on is where all the weight goes and frankly, it’s a horrible, exploitative industry. Don’t do it.

I’m approximately that weight, didn’t ride my horse personally then retired him when I thought he was getting on a bit.

Scarlettpixie · 07/04/2024 13:57

Yabu to support this cruel practice.

SabreIsMyFave · 07/04/2024 13:57

Yeah, check the weight limit @KathySeldon It will be so embarrassing if you get there and they say you're too heavy. 😬

I went on a balloon flight some 12 years ago, and when I booked it (after being given the voucher,) they asked me my weight! I was quite overweight at the time - 13 stone at 5 ft 3 - and I was so embarrassed to admit it, that I said '11 and a half stone.' It was 3 months away and I thought 'fuck! I am gonna have to lose one and a half stone in the next 3 months now!' 😆

I lost just half a stone, (dropped to 12 and a half stone,) and dreaded them weighing me and saying 'too fat sorry!' But they didn't weigh me. I must have looked 11 and a half stone. I wore loose black clothes, so probably didn't look 12 and a half stone!

Cherrysoup · 07/04/2024 13:58

Isn’t there an airline that now weighs passengers as well as luggage? I think that makes so much sense.

Camels can carry hundreds of pounds on their backs. They're not horses and shouldn't be compared to them.

AlwaysGinPlease · 07/04/2024 13:58

@fieldsofbutterflies Oh shhh. OP asked, people have answered. My post wasn't nasty. It was factual.

5128gap · 07/04/2024 14:00

Having you on its back would be the least of the poor creatures worries, I'm sure. If its the welfare of the animal you're concerned about, give it a miss altogether. If it's embarrassment at maybe being declined, then I'd not worry. It's the weight of your wallet that matters.

More than aware, thanks. Still think it’s a terrible idea. I’m sure you’re aware that ethically, it’s probably not a great idea. Camels can carry hundreds of pounds, but should they? Given the OP is already concerned and can have no idea of the animals welfare, I’d say god, no. Increasingly, people are campaigning to stop elephants carrying tourists, I don’t see how using a camel is any better.

It's not even remotely factual. Camels can easily carry an extra 200lbs of weight while walking 20 miles a day.

My point is that people can argue about the ethics of camel rides without bringing OP's weight into it.

Many people would argue that riding horses is equally cruel (and I say that as a rider myself).

KoolKookaburra · 07/04/2024 14:04

Yeah I think calling people fat is not needed for this conversation

They're beasts of burden because that's how humans in these countries define them. Doesn't mean it's right. People used to believe that about black slaves ffs.

People need to stop participating in cruelty as part of their holiday experience.

If you disagree with camel rides on an ethical level, then surely OP's weight is completely irrelevant and doesn't need to be commented on?

fieldsofbutterflies · 07/04/2024 14:10

I agree people shouldn't ride camels by the way, but that has nothing to do with the fact that OP weighs 15 stone. Some people's comments have just been plain nasty and it's totally unnecessary.

I don't disagree with that but referring to animals as beasts of burdens to justify that sort of treatment is ridiculous.

Having said that a bit of bloody common sense about it wouldn't go amiss.

Exactly. OP could weigh 8kg and it would still be an ethical issue

I wasn't using it to justify anything. I've said several times I don't agree with camel rides.

But I also don't agree with people insulting OP and calling her fat and "far too heavy". She's only 15 stones, she's hardly monstrous ffs.

fieldsofbutterflies · 07/04/2024 14:30

KoolKookaburra · 07/04/2024 14:22

Precisely.

I think most people on here agree that camel rides set up for tourists are wrong. There's absolutely no need to use OP's weight to make her feel like shit, though.

Thanks all.

Shall make a decision when I'm there.
Off to get some sunshine now. 😎

Are you not taking note of all the comments on animal cruelty? Sorry if I sound judgey but to be honest, I am judging. Never forget seeing a bloke in Egypt punching a camel really hard in the face because it was reluctant to give some tourists a ride.

samsam123 · 07/04/2024 15:15

they treat the camels terribly, give the money to animal welfare charity and walk

Radradrad · 07/04/2024 15:40

Pure cruelty, wouldn't get on one if I weighed 1kg.

Yeah I saw a camel in Egypt being viciously whipped because it wasn't leaning down far enough for a tourist to get on. Horrendous existence but OP sounds like you don't care.
