Husband wats to book a camel ride on holiday next week.
I'm feeling that I am too heavy to go on a camel.
AIBU to think that?

Well done Kathy
Sorry you've had some harsh comments on here
The point of animal welfare was well pointed out a while ago , no need for the other shitty comments
Sooner these people realise we won't support any kind of animal cruelty , hopefully they'll stop parading them for our pleasure

SabreIsMyFave · 09/04/2024 17:16

Ok ok.
im in Morocco and we’re not doing a camel ride. I have read every comment.

Even worse than camel riding - imo- is the dressed up monkeys with a chain lead. Not sure what I think about snake charmers either. Mad country in many ways!

Well done for not doing the camel ride @KathySeldonSmile

I admit I was ignorant about the treatment of this majestic creature and didn't know they were abused for the pleasure of humans. I know some people will think I'm a bit thick and ignorant for saying that, but it just didn't occur to me. I feel a bit shit about that, and hate myself for my stupid ignorance.

If I ever go to North Africa, I will never do a camel ride! Thank you to the posters on here for bringing this fact up, and educating me. Flowers

You’re certainly not thick and ignorant, @SabreIsMyFave You’ve read the information and decided never to support it again which makes you quite the opposite of thick and ignorant.

We’ve probably all done things that we aren’t proud of and wouldn’t do now because back then we didn’t know better. It’s impossible to know about every issue. What matters is what you do with the knowledge once you’ve acquired it and you and the OP have decided not to contribute to the misery so please don’t put yourself down like that.

I can honestly say that marrakech is the most bonkers, and fantastic place on earth. If you get half a chance, go!

👏 to all you arm chair protesters!

Camels were domesticated around 4000 yrs BC, roughly the same time as horses. I just cannot believe the ignorance on this thread about people making a living in another country by offering camel rides. How is this different to horse rides?

Of course you avoid anything with poor animal welfare but otherwise this is fine. In fact you would be supporting local people instead of buying plastic tat from China.
I wonder how many of you buy rip off handbags abroad?

If I went to a riding school in the U.K. or took the children for ride on the Blackpool Beach donkeys I know that certain welfare standards have been met.

I can personally vouch for the way the Blackpool Donkeys are cared for. In some other counties they are not cared for to the same standards. You can cry racism all you like but it’s true.

Supporting local people to undertake a job that means they are making a living from animal abuse. If people stop using it they will stop doing it.

I would say that - Yes you are too heavy to ride on a camel, especially as i assume it is 'just for fun' etc!

We're talking about animal welfare here Zsa Zsa unless you think 150+ posters here are all vegan. We don't object to horse or camel riding in principle

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 10/04/2024 09:42

@ZsaZsaTheCat there is one hell of a difference between googling general information about an animal online and witnessing what happens to said animal with your own eyes on a daily basis. Domesticated doesn't mean anything goes. Dogs are domesticated. Does that mean dog breeders can punch, kick and abuse the dogs as long as they provide him with a living?

CheeryPye · 10/04/2024 09:46

Personally I think nothing is acceptable. Camels shouldn't be exploited for our entertainment. They aren't meant to be ridden. I know a really overweight girl who is in a perpetual state of denial and can't seem to work out why her horse always goes lame and has to have stable rest all week because of back problems every time she has forced herself on it and ridden the poor thing for over an hour. It's obvious to everyone else who knows her why her horse suffers so much pain. She however seems completely oblivious.
