Husband wats to book a camel ride on holiday next week.
I'm feeling that I am too heavy to go on a camel.
AIBU to think that?

If you're going to North Africa, then it won't be a camel 🐫, but a dromedary 🐪.

I agree people shouldn't ride camels by the way, but that has nothing to do with the fact that OP weighs 15 stone. Some people's comments have just been plain nasty and it's totally unnecessary.

Hear hear…In their rush to appear self-righteous they’re actually coming off unnecessarily spiteful.

Jc2001 · 07/04/2024 14:07

They're beasts of burden because that's how humans in these countries define them. Doesn't mean it's right. People used to believe that about black slaves ffs.

People need to stop participating in cruelty as part of their holiday experience.

Are you comparing racist attitudes & the inhumane treatment of enslaved humans to animals? This is massively inappropriate, offensive and poorly worded.

katseyes7 · 07/04/2024 17:43

Isn’t there an airline that now weighs passengers as well as luggage? I think that makes so much sense.
The 'excess baggage' charge bemuses me when you relate it to diversity in weight of passengers.

I genuinely cannot see the logic of charging people excess baggage for a few kilos in luggage, yet two people weighing seven stone and seventeen stone are treated the same.
I'm not being 'fattist', l'm two stone overweight myself, but it just seems to defy logic when you have to pay extra for a few kilos, but several stone is fine.

I'm saying just because someone says something is ok, it doesn't mean it is.

I'm not comparing anything with anything else.

Wind your neck in.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/04/2024 17:53

It’s a very uncomfortable ride! Personally I’d give it a miss.,

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 07/04/2024 19:06

I won't share what I've seen in Egypt as others have, it's just too distressing. Seems like OP is very much unconcerned though as she pops off to enjoy the sunshine 🤷‍♀️Don't know why she posted really if what she's read hasn't swayed her decision one way or the other.

Do you feel the same about the horses in riding stables which children in the UK regularly frequent to learn to ride? What about the horses which are used by charities such as RDA for riding for the disabled? Horses are used to have people ride them to make money and I never see anyone moan about that in the UK.

Are the welfare standards the same in both countries?

Bet they're not

Beasts of burden are just tools and treated accordingly

OP hasn’t even said which country she’s in and most people here have unilaterally said camel riding is cruel, completely ignoring the fact that welfare standards aren’t the same everywhere and that there are reputable camel trek and legitimate places to ride camels. Obviously no id a if this is the case for OP but it’s not as black and white as all situations where camels are being ridden are bad, which I would argue is not the case for things like swimming with dolphins which it’s been compared to. Camels have been domesticated and used by humans for thousands of years much like horses, not recently captured from the wild like dolphins.

I personally don't think it's fair on the poor camel, but then I think that about any adult on one!

They are beasts of burden...not pets.

MrsFionaCharnimg · 07/04/2024 22:58

trythisforsize · 06/04/2024 21:11

On the other hand, if you don't go, don't pay to ride, camel owner has less money, camel gets less food...

. . . or camel owner accept there's no money in this anymore and finds another trade

Exactly

Continue to support an unethical trade to ensure animal gets fed?

Yes, buy more exotic tigers, puppy farm dogs, rude abused elephants, buy lipstick tested on beagles... won't get fed otherwise

😑

CeriB82 · 08/04/2024 06:45

Please don’t. Totally unfair on the camel.

and have you seen clips of the camel who couldn’t get up because of the weight?

Knicksandnocks · 08/04/2024 09:59

I have seen pack-camels that regularly carry more than 120kg
General welfare is much more important than your 95kg

RainbowFlutter · 08/04/2024 10:33

Hey OP, quick Google shows camels can carry up to 23 stone. I'd just go. Ignore the meanies. Camels are meant to carry big loads, if it's not little you, it'll be a bigger person who's just not thought about it.

Have a good holiday.

"Ignore the meanies op, camels can carry big loads".

Irony is lost on you.

Also participating in animal abuse is worse than online meanies.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/04/2024 10:57

They may be concerned that you would start out the ride on a dromedary camel 🐪 but bring back a bactrian camel 🐫.

The camels are often treated terribly and cruelly trained. Your weight is the least of the issues regarding tourists going on camel rides.

This. Please don’t.

@RainbowFlutter 'ignore the meanies?' Are you for real? The punching kicking whipping and flogging of the animals doesn't concern you AT ALL??

Validus · 08/04/2024 12:23

Where are you all going where the camels are chained? I rode a camel in the desert 30 years ago and there were no chains. When did that start?

They're not. They're demonstrating that a practice can be commonly accepted and immoral at the same time. Astounded at some people's lack of reading comprehension, honestly

They were in Egypt 30 years ago - all hobbled. And the donkeys with scars across their rumps. Sad

Seriously people please don't. These animals are not cared for or treated well.

KathySeldon · 09/04/2024 14:15

Ok ok.
im in Morocco and we’re not doing a camel ride.
I have read every comment.
even worse than camel riding - imo- is the dressed up monkeys with a chain lead.
not sure what I think about snake charmers either.
mad country in many ways!
