Bullshitter at work - could this be true?

There's a woman at work who is basically full of lies. A few people have fallen for it , but in order to have done everything she's done, she would need to be 200 years old.
Her latest tale is that she was caught speeding on the motorway at 120mph but the police let her off with a warning. Surely that cannot be true? I was under the impression that the police always act on speeding that is this dramatic. What do you guys think?

Does it matter?

I do know at least 2 people who've been stopped at over 100mph on a motorway and given a warning, so I don't think it's impossible. But I can't work out why you're bothered, either way...

Ponoka7 · 06/04/2024 06:16

If you don't have an attitude, apologise etc and the individual officer thinks that a warning is enough, then it's possible. Occasionally they breathalise you etc. Tbh my sister should have been charged with careless driving, but when they ask what she does for a living and she tells them her very proffessional role, they overlook her driving. Many police officers still act with bias. Have you got another example?

crochetmonkey74 · 06/04/2024 06:20

There are loads of examples of her tall tales.
Interesting to know that it's not necessarily an instant ban though. I always thought it was

OP posts:
OldTinHat · 06/04/2024 06:22

I thought over 100 was an instant ban too.

I got done last year for doing 33 in a 30 and did a speed awareness course instead of taking the points.

KnightonShiningArmour · 06/04/2024 06:22

Entirely plausible. Depends on if the equipment is calibrated. How far into the shift the officer was, if she gave them a decent excuse etc..

My BIL was stopped doing over 110mph on the M6 toll about 15 years ago. He had no excuse; but the unmarked police car didn’t have proper speed equipment in it - they just matched his speed then pulled him over. The traffic officer basically gave him a ticking off and told him next time he’d not be so lucky.

I was let off at a similar speed around 20 years ago thry just told me off

anon4net · 06/04/2024 06:29

I know a Vicar who speeds like nobody's business. He always receives warnings!

Also with respect to your colleague, I think some people lead very interesting lives and have more things happen to them than most. Whether they embellish or not is anyone's guess. Just smile and don't take it to heart.

I thought so too. Maybe when it's (static) speed cameras?

I remember Hugh Grant getting a ban for doing over a 100 from a speed camera near where I used to live many years ago.

Sparklfairy · 06/04/2024 06:30

She's obviously got charisma if people are falling for these apparent 'lies'. Maybe she used those charms on the police! Wink

Very unlikely. My best mate, ex traffic cop said that if he wanted to be lenient, the best he would do was drop the recorded speed to 99 so they don’t get an instant ban.

I don't take it to heart and it doesn't bother me in a negative way, but they really are embellished ridiculous stories
I don't want to put exact details as someone might recognise.
But imagine being 35 , and already you've been a doctor, a vet, a solicitor , ran your own business and had 3 children. You've also solved a murder by overhearing something at a pub and been part of the team that brought down the Rochdale grooming gang despite never being near Rochdale

I got pulled over by police for doing 37 in a 30 and they just told me to drive at the speed limit in future.

PotatoPudding · 06/04/2024 06:49

I often wonder if people think this about me. I have lots of experiences, had lots of varying jobs, generally done loads of stuff, but the jobs were concurrent, I didn’t settle down until I was 40, I had no ties and basically grabbed every bull by the horns. Even now, I work part time, study 12 hours a week, own a shop with DH, have a small side line business and have a 5yo DC. Then, in my spare time, which isn’t much at the moment, I do silversmithing. This probably sounds like BS to most people.

No I don't think so, her tales are outlandish and just not possible time wise.
There is a difference and you can just tell lots of it is nonsense

OP posts:
ThinWomansBrain · 06/04/2024 07:01

maybe she fits so much in because she does it all at120mph?

It is usually an automatic ban over 100 - I’d have though definitely at 120.

CormorantStrikesBack · 06/04/2024 07:13

I know someone who got caught doing 110mph and got six months in prison. My ex financial advisor, afaik it was his first speeding offence.

He must have been doing that in a built up area. Nutter.

@crochetmonkey74 her name doesn't begin with N does it? I used to work with someone who told very similar tales!

No it doesn't begin with N
It's weird at work as some people are totally sucked in by her and some are just side eyeing each other. This is quite outing but she once said she removed her oxygen mask in an operation and guided the surgeon how to do it as she knew he was doing it wrong

OP posts:
Tatas · 06/04/2024 07:34

I mean I'd probably have started the thread with the comments about guiding her own surgeon through an operation, or remotely solving the Rochdale grooming ring rather than the speeding, the speeding is believable - the rest less so 😂

Her tales sound very very tall! My best bet would be either ignore, or act super interested and start asking for more information so she'll stumble / won't know 🤷🏻‍♀️

RichardsGear · 06/04/2024 07:34

Adopt a policy of responding, "Did ye, aye?" to every tall tale. Even an, "Okaay!" with an indulgent look would do, a bit like you do with a toddler when they're coming out with a load of gobbledegook. Or smile and nod, smile and nod...

determinedtomakethiswork · 06/04/2024 07:37

That's really funny about the operation. Just ridiculous. also being qualified in all those things. You know you can look her up on the medical register?
