Bullshitter at work - could this be true?

crochetmonkey74 · 06/04/2024 06:09

There's a woman at work who is basically full of lies. A few people have fallen for it , but in order to have done everything she's done, she would need to be 200 years old.
Her latest tale is that she was caught speeding on the motorway at 120mph but the police let her off with a warning. Surely that cannot be true? I was under the impression that the police always act on speeding that is this dramatic. What do you guys think?

Yes, this is what I was thinking too. That she might be exaggerating rather than outright lying. Some people do it just to tell a good story and build rapport rather than maliciously.

I don't think she is malicious at all. But very delusional. I think she sometimes thinks she needs a new story every day.

I probably sound like this sometimes but there is a difference in how people talk about things. I've travelled a lot and changed jobs a lot.
I went to uni with someone who was just a compulsive liar though. It is really strange. We were all 18 but he would talk about being a bare knuckle boxing champion when he was younger. He'd also turn up to the campus pub and be flexing his hand and say he got jumped on the way there and started a fight and beat him up 🙄.
I understand it a bit more at that age though as it's showing off and all new people, there was often a kid at school who'd make stuff up but most people don't do it as adults.

Mairzydotes · 06/04/2024 08:55

Some bullshitter's storytelling has a basis in truth but they tell a portmanteau of different situations as one tale eg once her speed crept up to 120 and on another situation she got a speeding ticket that nothing came of .
The job thing, she worked briefly at these jobs , perhaps as a receptionist , or started the training then moved to something else.

I just reply ' oh' to stories I don't believe.

Celticliving · 06/04/2024 08:57

I had one of these in an old circle of friends about 10 years ago.

It wasn't so much that we always thought she was lying, it was more the 'been there, done that' attitude which ALWAYS led to her taking over the conversation..

"I'm going to the circus tomorrow"

"Daddy hired me a circus for my 10th birthday party".

"I'm doing a hot air balloon ride when I go on holiday"

"Oh, Mummy used to own a hot air balloon".

It was relentless and VERY tiring. So I pulled her on it.

user33992020 · 06/04/2024 08:59

I thought over 100 was an instant ban too

No it's not. My partner was caught doing almost 120 on the motorway. He had to send in his explanation to the courts and he had never done it before. He took full responsibility for it and apologised and got a £600 fine and 6 points. No driving ban.

Alstreena · 06/04/2024 08:59

It could be true but who the heck cares?

Just take all she says with a pinch of salt. Say "Oooh, fancy that" whenever she comes out with her porkies.

Nicetobenice67 · 06/04/2024 09:01

Why do you even care 🙄🤣🤣

I used to work with someone like this. Used to tell the most outrageous stories of courage and bravery, saving peoples lives etc. We all knew it was bullshit but very entertaining listening to it all.
My then teenage sone was stopped on the motorway doing 100 mph. Pulled over by the police, he was questioned and told them he was a squaddie posted in Germany. The policeman patted him on the shoulder, reminded him he wasn't on the autobahn.
Gave him a warning and let him go 😁

BMW6 · 06/04/2024 09:21

I'd just laugh at her stories and shake my head at her.

Zwicky · 06/04/2024 09:21

DH got pulled over years ago (30+) doing over 100 and got a ticking off. If y
they don’t have proper evidence behind the copper saying “he was speeding m’lud” then they don’t bother.

I work with a liar and I feel your pain. She is the opposite of your colleague. If she was lying about speeding she would say “I was driving at 69 miles an hour and he said that if I had accelerated then I would have been speeding so I had to pay the fine.” The whole day is a constant stream about how terrible things have happened and none of them are her fault. It’s exhausting. I think people underestimate how draining it is spending huge amounts of time with someone you can’t trust and can’t have any sort of normal conversation with.

RethinkingLife · 06/04/2024 09:29

anon4net · 06/04/2024 06:29

I know a Vicar who speeds like nobody's business. He always receives warnings!

Also with respect to your colleague, I think some people lead very interesting lives and have more things happen to them than most. Whether they embellish or not is anyone's guess. Just smile and don't take it to heart.

I saw a panel show with Greg Davies once and it must have been something to do with truth and lies (Would I Lie To You?).

All of the outlandish things that turned out to be true about him were remarkable, from school days as a pupil, to being a teacher and his general life.

cafenoirbiscuit · 06/04/2024 09:30

I’d be tempted to say ‘cool story, bro’ (needs more dinosaurs)

PropertyManager · 06/04/2024 09:36

crochetmonkey74 · 06/04/2024 06:41

I don't take it to heart and it doesn't bother me in a negative way, but they really are embellished ridiculous stories
I don't want to put exact details as someone might recognise.
But imagine being 35 , and already you've been a doctor, a vet, a solicitor , ran your own business and had 3 children. You've also solved a murder by overhearing something at a pub and been part of the team that brought down the Rochdale grooming gang despite never being near Rochdale

Some people do achieve a huge amount in a short time, a very good friend is in his mid 40's, is a medical doctor, has a law degree, served as a pilot in the air force - some people just achieve a lot in a short space of time. Others like me a just content with a BSc and a job!

Rainydayze · 06/04/2024 09:41

Try the jokey “photo or it didn’t happen” phrase.

I worked with someone who said Princess Diana went around her cousin’s house when he was really ill! She’d met him while Charles was in hospital. Many eye rolls later and she called our bluff and brought the photos! It was hard to automatically rule out the other incredible stuff she said. Don’t think she ever directed a surgeon though.

Rainydayze · 06/04/2024 09:43

Ps what was it about the murder that she overhead in the pub? I wondered if it was along the lines of a news story I’d read.

@crochetmonkey74 her name doesn't begin with N does it? I used to work with someone who told very similar tales!

Wondering if I worked with your N 😂. She use to tell such funny lies.

One I always think of, she came in one day and said her husband had just left to go to work on the North Sea oil rigs, we work down south for context.

That day as I was leaving I walked outside and he was sat waiting for her to finish work. He waved at me and asked if she’d be long.

The next day she again said how much she was missing her husband as he was on the rigs. I was sat there thinking are you okay? I didn’t say anything as she was harmless enough and wasn’t hurting anyone. Had a rough childhood so think she lived in a little fantasy land in her mind. Nice person though, you just had to take what she said with a pinch of salt.

🙄 I didn't bother to read the rest of the comments as I didn't see the point ...wht do you even care ...must be a reason

TommyJoesMummy · 06/04/2024 10:05

I know who the woman that overheard something in a pub that helped solve a murder was. She is in her 60’s as the police caught Colin Pitchfork. It’s the first murder solved by DNA and John Simms was in a docudrama of it where they all picked up the wrong ‘local’ accent.
Ask her for details and catch her in a lie?

Mumofyellows · 06/04/2024 10:10

I worked with a girl who told us her Mum used to be married to H Samual and so she could walk into any branch and have whatever she wanted for free at any time. Also that she actually sung all of Kylie's songs and Kylie mimed them. There were many more things but she was hilarious and had no idea that we all thought she was batshit 😂

Yes this was what came to my mind with pub scenario.

Crikeyalm · 06/04/2024 10:17

i used to manage someone who lied all the time , used to bring in a medal that apparently he had got for saving some one’s life in a war zone and put it on his desk . One day he called in and said would not be in that day as his parents been killed in a car crash . Phoned his home phone to see how he was , his dad answered the phone .

That's ok , you don't need to be sure. This is a chat forum and I can chat about anything I want. You don't have to engage or attempt to shut it down

Perfect response to a ridiculous post OP 😀

Your colleague probably has low self esteem, bullshitting to make herself sound more interesting and intelligent. It's quite sad really that she can't just be herself.

She would piss me off though, and I'd likely quiz her when she came out with such bullshit.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/04/2024 10:22

Sounds like Fast Show guy, “30 years man and boy”.
