I don't go out often any more (been pregnant or breastfeeding for the last 4y plus) and been invited to a big venued birthday. Its next week.

Asked my friend what we're wearing "is it like, wedding guest or pub date, do you think?" And she replies "I'm sure you can wear whatever you want".

I feel snubbed. Won't ask her again. But relieved by the responses on this thread

YABU. And pretty miserable. I can't say I really do it very often. But if you are going to something a bit special or different to the norm, it can be reasuring/interesting to know.

I absolutely hate it when my friends ask me that...and I haven't pin pointed what it is about that causes that reaction.

Maybe I feel like it puts pressure on having to look good.
Maybe I don't like to appear like I've made an effort I just want to come across like I've thrown this all on at the last minute...like it's easy to look good. I'm not sure. Just thinking out loud.

Surely most chat is trivial. I'm obviously really immature because not every conversation I have is critically important or deeply profound.

I'm going out with friends tomorrow night to a city local to one of them, but not to me. I've never been and not been to the restaurants or any of the pubs we're going to. I'll definitely ask what kind of places they are, what the other two are wearing so that I don't make a tit of myself. I don't wear clothes that I don't enjoy wearing so whatever I do wear I'll be comfortable wearing, I just want a bit of a heads up.

Surely we have been to enough occasions as adults to know what surrounding require certain type of outfits that's all.

Actually I think it can vary quite a bit these days - how formal or informal isn't always obvious so asking other so you can gauge it correctly seems sensible. I suspect they don't really want to know the outfit you are actually wearing OP more trying to gauge the vibe of the event so they pick in ball park - and few days before means in case they don't have right items they may be able to obtain in time.
