I’ve just given my 2 year old a desert and just realised it contains alcohol

Just bought a lemon desert from Lidls we’ve all sat down to share it after dinner and half way through thought i could taste alcohol so checked the ingredients and it does contain it. I’m freaking out. He’s only had a tablespoon worth of a fair sized pack but I am freaking out and feel like absolute shot 😢 posting here for traffic.

What great SPIRITS is he in OP 🍹🥃🍾🍸😵‍💫🤪

LoobyDop · 03/04/2024 20:11

As long as he didn’t drive you home afterwards, it’s not that bad.

VK456 · 03/04/2024 20:23

Many years ago my eldest ate an entire punnet of over ripe soft fruit. They were spark out on the sofa a little while afterwards. I have always assumed that some kind of fermentation process must have place somewhere and they were sleeping off the effects!

Get a grip. Gripe water contained alcohol and I don’t recall any of my children’s generation being hospitalised from its consumption. All will be well.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 03/04/2024 20:50

Just don't let him drive!!! My brother was given whisky by an uncle, whilst at a family wedding, when he was three. My Mum said it was the best behaved she ever saw him and thought he was just tired, until my uncle confessed, oops. He'll be fine.

Yogagrandmum · 03/04/2024 20:54

Ha ha ha

Morganrae1 · 03/04/2024 20:58

When my son was about 6 he drank his grandmothers double vodka and coke instead of his own coke. He knew it was a mistake as soon as he put the glass down. He had drunk it all in one go as he did at that time. I kept an eye on him but he was fine. He'd had a big dinner and it was soaked up. Don't worry yourself, your child will eat a lot worse as they grow up.

Hagpie · 03/04/2024 21:04

Just another poster here to tell you he’s fine and you’re still a good mum.

Apparently when I was about 2.5, I helped finish off a bunch of half-empty wine glasses the adult had left on the table at a party. I got them one-by-one off of the table so I could feed some to my younger brother (1.5). We’re fine promise!

Ah yes, the "good grief" brigade are out to offer their usual help and support to a worried parent.

OP, as others have said, they will be fine with such a small amount so try not to fret.

Well put. This is clearly a post from an anxious first time parent, why do people have to be snotty?

Lovelemons · 03/04/2024 21:11

Oh and my 15 month old quaffed an almost full glass of rose accidentally left in reach by a friend who wasn't a parent and she is just grand now (and a 17 yr old tee total!)

linsey2581 · 03/04/2024 21:48

One new year in the late 80s my grandparents came round for Hogmanay my grandpa left his OVD and coke (Scottish people will know exactly what this is 😉)at the side of the couch. My sister who was 2 at the time drank decided to drink said glass of coke and ended up having a fantastic sleep that night. I think a spoonful of lemon desert won’t harm him.

pollymere · 03/04/2024 22:00

Waitrose used to do a sherry trifle which actually set off the age check on the till. It wasn't particularly alcoholic and I never got asked if I intended to give it to DC. I wouldn't worry - the amounts are tiny and he'll probably sleep like a dream!

ftp · 03/04/2024 22:05

Look again at label and see where the alcohol comes in the list. It is always in quantity order. Prob a small drop of something like limoncelo right at the bottom of the list?
My DD has lactose intolerance. Moving 300 miles, and she was given the wrong food at nursery (what part of Yoghourt, did cook not understand was MILK???)
Screaming child late at night - called new GP for prescription - put her to bed, she will be OK. Called old GP with much apologies - he told me that tsp of sherry would work - It did.
The worst that will happen is loose bowels as his tummy relaxes.

You are not wrong to be cautious, as children have been now to suffer from alcohol poisoning from just one glassful of spirit

letitlego · 03/04/2024 22:39

Make sure they don’t drive for a few hours!

Mamanyt · 03/04/2024 23:29

The amount of alcohol in such things is negligible, and wouldn't even get a gerbil drunk. Well, maybe a gerbil. MAYBE. Relax, take a deep breath, and try not to make yourself crazy over this.

Please keep out of reach of all gerbils at home 😆

Itsaloadofbollocksbut · 04/04/2024 11:44

Gave mine Xmas cake before she was 1. She’s fine.

Deardear17 · 04/04/2024 11:45

My DH forgot he left a glass of whisky in reach of our toddler who drank some!
no harm came from it and LO slept all night! 😂

Thank you all for the funny and the very kind comments even the very blunt and honest ones, mumsnet always help to put some things into perspective ☺️ I’ll try not to panic so much in future… not that I’ll be giving any alcohol to my 2 year old anytime soon 🙈

Glad we could help. And, to keep things in perspective, it wasn't but a generation or two ago that the approved treatment for teething pain was a bit of whiskey rubbed on the gums. Depending on your age, your parents, or certainly THEIR parents, had this done regularly, and here we all are.

And more recently standard Bonjela, which is 40% ethanol, was routinely used for infants until 2008 when it was reclassified as "over 16s only", (but not because of the alcohol, due to another aspirin-like ingredient and a theoretical risk of Reyes Syndrome).

Nettie1964 · 09/04/2024 22:24

I gave my eldest grioe water frequently as a baby.he had colic. I didn't realise until years later that it was alcohol. My son grew up a wonderful person. He still likes the occasional drink tho.
