I’ve just given my 2 year old a desert and just realised it contains alcohol

Just bought a lemon desert from Lidls we’ve all sat down to share it after dinner and half way through thought i could taste alcohol so checked the ingredients and it does contain it. I’m freaking out. He’s only had a tablespoon worth of a fair sized pack but I am freaking out and feel like absolute shot 😢 posting here for traffic.

Gripe water is still freely available and contains no alcohol - I don't think it did even 60 years ago when I was a baby!

Alcohol was removed in 1992 from Dinneford's gripe water.
Dill is the main ingredient.

The Soothing Syrups for babies containing opium and morphine were lethal in the 19th Centuries.

I wish someone gave me morphine when I couldn’t sleep

coffeeandcake91 · 02/04/2024 23:08

he'll be fine. they gave kids brandy back in the day

LawrieForShepherdsBoy · 02/04/2024 23:09

Ds was 4 when he drank an entire measure of gin on a Brittany Ferry before going back into the soft play area. I had poured his orange juice into the wrong glass while my ‘gin’ was merely melted ice cubes.

Another beneficiary of whisky for teething here. Was this a northern thing? 👋🏼

He’ll be fine for now but the real worry is that it’ll be a gateway dessert.

This . Sherry trifle first ,then the dark descent into the abyss that is Crepes Suzette .

viques · 02/04/2024 23:19

My grannies cure for a child’s cold was an aspirin ground up between two teaspoons , added to a tot of rum and topped up with hot water. We survived.

We were always given alcohol and sugar in hot water when we were ill and were fine.
Only three more years and he'll legally able to drink 😀

goingtotown · 02/04/2024 23:35

Apparently my DM rubbed brandy on my gums when I was teething.

It is rather pleasant. Therein lies the problem with it! It is soothing to the worried as well.

I once bought a multi pack of small tropicanas and had given my 2yo 2 of them before I realised they contained caffeine & were an adulterated energising OJ beverage. Yikes!

jf1992x · 03/04/2024 00:30

Haha - first kid is it?! 🤣 sure he'll survive another day!

Why on earth would you be "freaking out?" It's a tiny bit of alcohol, not anthrax. Good grief.

This. A little dramatic from OP.

ittakes2 · 03/04/2024 01:11

The constipation medicine my daughter used to take at 6 months old had alchol in it - that was the main ingredient to help with stool softening

mayorofcasterbridge · 03/04/2024 01:19

My teetotal late parents many years ago used to keep brandy in the house for reviving poorly newborn lambs. I can't remember if it saved any, but I do remember one lamb they overdosed, it got pissed and had to sober up! It survived!

My youngest drank an almost full bottle of Calpol in the car one night on the way home from nursery. Reassured by the childproof cap, I let him hold it because he wanted to... not DS-proof, as it turned out! He was fine.

Anonymous2025 · 03/04/2024 02:16

He will be fine

Barquentine · 03/04/2024 02:39

No offence OP but I’d be more concerned about the red label for saturated fats and sugar for that dessert. 19.6% sugar!wow

Heres the additives
Id list the ingredients but they are not in English online.

Oo yes my mum always gave us a hot toddy. Whiskey with hot water and honey for a cold

SammyScrounge · 03/04/2024 03:09

My three loved my sherry trifle. They came to no harm.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 03/04/2024 07:36

I wanted to check in and see how they're dealing with the hangover, nothing worse than a grumpy two year old. Give them lots of coffee and a bacon sandwich, I find that usually does the trick.

I came in to ask if he woke up begging for a bacon sandwich, dammit.

BeethovenNinth · 03/04/2024 07:42

PFB?

Give it a decade and you will look back with wonder when this was all you has to worry about

(Ps it’s not the alcohol you need to worry about. The UPF would bother me more)

When my sister was two she drank a whole glass of vodka and coke. She was fine - she ate an onion like it was an apple - but apart from that she was fine.
