I’ve just given my 2 year old a desert and just realised it contains alcohol

Just bought a lemon desert from Lidls we’ve all sat down to share it after dinner and half way through thought i could taste alcohol so checked the ingredients and it does contain it. I’m freaking out. He’s only had a tablespoon worth of a fair sized pack but I am freaking out and feel like absolute shot 😢 posting here for traffic.

@CagneyAndLazy I'm so confused of all the comparison to fruit. Am I missing something?

Any ripe soft fruit will contain a small but measurable quantity of alcohol caused by natural fermentation, up to a potential max 0.5% abv for some oranges juices. It's a good cut off for the point at which you should worry.

InTheRainOnATrain · 02/04/2024 19:34

It’s comparable to a hot dog roll or burger buns that include sugar in the recipe. When the sugar in the dough mixes with the yeast it becomes mildly alcoholic to about 1.3%. And those are basic kids food staples! Orange juice and apple juice also contain trace amounts of alcohol because of the fruit sugars fermenting slightly during the juicing process. It really isn’t a big deal.

Soontobe60 · 02/04/2024 19:35

There’s less than 10 ml alcohol in the whole dessert, which is 450mls. 1 ml per 45 mls. So 1/45th alcohol per teaspoon of dessert.

@MassageForLife

My brother, aged two and a half, drank half a glass of vodka and orange, in the five minutes they were out. He was fine. He slept late, but he was fine.

This did make me laugh.
At a wedding we gave our 5 a glass of champagne to hold and have a tiny sip.
Before I could wrestle it off him he'd down half of it.....he was fine , though I didn't try it again Blush

I used to live far up north.

One night when I was a child, we had relations over. I think it was a birthday.

The northern lights came out, so the adults went outside to see them.

My brother, aged two and a half, drank half a glass of vodka and orange, in the five minutes they were out. He was fine. He slept late, but he was fine.

I think the tbsp of dessert is not going to be an issue. Don't worry.

Slept late 😊

The reason they even put it on the packaging is I assume because Muslims would want to know. Not because it actually contains a volume of alcohol that could affect anyone. The only reason it tastes strong is because of the various flavourings. I'm fairly sure vanilla essence contains alcohol. I make gravy with wine, and then I cook it until it's boiled for some time - the end product would have homeopathic concentrations, maybe (i.e. basically no effect).

Llistamista · 02/04/2024 18:12

Contains alcohol doesn’t mean it’s alcoholic. Does it have a warning not for under 18’s and an ABV %? No? It’s not alcoholic

I've had them and they do taste boozy - it's something like 16% of the total weight of the pud iirc

VeronicaBeccabunga · 02/04/2024 19:39

I once sat at the dining table with my daughter in a high chair, chatting and passing her cubes of fruit out of a fruit salad which she was enjoying happily.
MIL pointed out that the fruit was soaked in Grand Marnier :-D

DianaTaverner · 02/04/2024 19:40

When my DC were teething my DM recommended rubbing their gums with brandy. I clutched my pearls in the MN-approved manner at this shocking suggestion and said that I would of course be applying Bonjela, as recommended by my GP, and approved for use in infants.

It wasn't until I checked the ingredients that I realised that Bonjela had slightly higher alcohol levels than brandy. (The infant version doesn't have alcohol any more I think, this was twenty years ago when there was only one type)

Fightingtobepositive · 02/04/2024 19:40

thanks again all and thanks for taking the time to write down some facts…
loving the facts loving the quirky stories. Keep them coming ;)

1.8%. they may taste boozy but they are NOT. There is no age restriction. It’s a bloody lemon pudding

My Auntie Janet was a bit surprised one Christmas when she took a slurp of her G&T and found it was lemonade.

There was much amusement when the adults realised that 5 year old me was drinking my aunt's G&T and apparently enjoying it. I'm quite surprised I liked it really, my gran had made them and her G&Ts were practically 50% Tanquerays.

And I've made myself fancy one now, and I haven't got any tonic...

iolaus · 02/04/2024 20:08

He'll be fine - it was an accident -
Once my son (just turned 1) eat brandy custard - we'd gone out for christmas dinner, his aunt had christmas pudding and he was eyeing it up and before she tried it she gave him a spoonful - he loved it and ate about half the custard before she tried any of it - she gave him the custard thinking the pudding had alcohol in - apparently it was more like custard flavoured brandy than the other way round
Aside from after giggling to himself falling asleep with his head on the highchair table he was fine

Hoxite274764 · 02/04/2024 20:09

😂

StolenCookie · 02/04/2024 20:35

This is a non event.

Toastednut · 02/04/2024 18:20

Do not worry - I was given brandy in my milk bottle regularly as a tiny baby to 'aid sleep' 😂

A tiny accidental gulp of alcohol won't do any harm. Please don't worry at all, your little one will be absolutely fine.

Also massive hug - it's horrible to feel panicked about children.

As a side note, I was given alcohol with my Christmas dinner every year from around age 6 🤣

So was I!

Ihearyousingingdownthewire · 02/04/2024 21:02

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I mean this kindly, OP, but I absolutely love the mental, panicking PFB threads.

Timeturnerplease · 02/04/2024 21:02

At Christmas MIL misplaced her glass of fizz. We found DD2 (age 2) quietly sipping it while watching Tabby McTat. She slept well that night, but was completely unharmed.

I promise you, alcohol in a pudding is a non issue.

FionnulaTheCooler · 02/04/2024 18:10

He will be fine, it's a tiny amount. People used to give kids "gripe water" which is basically gin a couple of generations ago.

I did not no this 🤣 used to give it to oldest as a baby. Also my 4yr old managed to get the anbesol off the shelf when he was about two and drank half the bottle. Drs advice was just to give him water. He was totally fine

Maka21 · 02/04/2024 21:09

In this case it will be fine, as in a tiny taste of a pudding, but people’s attitude on this post to giving alcohol to small children is quite worrying. There is actually new studies and schools of thinking on this subject highlighting the real dangers of giving alcohol to small children. It is illegal to give children under 5 alcohol for good reason.

Topsyturvy78 · 02/04/2024 21:10

My son drank an alcoholic drink we just so happened to have paramedics there to check DD over. They said it won't do him any harm and to just give him lots of milk to drink to flush it out of his system.

emmetgirl · 02/04/2024 21:10

When I was a child, maybe 4/5, me and my sister who would have been about 9 ate a load the fruit out of the big bowl of VERY boozy punch my dad had made. Apparently we got a bit pissed. I don't remember it but it was a family story for many years.
I'm now 57 and my sister is 62.
We're both very much still alive and well.
Chill out luv.

Sallyh87 · 02/04/2024 21:12

I gave mine beer battered cod tonight!!!!!

Allofaflutter · 02/04/2024 21:19

My brother ate the whole tub of brandy cream when he was a baby. It was within reach of his high chair and he dipped his spoon in and licked it until it was empty. Slept for 10 hours. Was fine.

Gettingonmygoat · 02/04/2024 21:22

Here in Scotland whiskey was used to rub on babies gums when they were teething.
Nurse Harvey's and Woodward's gripe water used to have alcohol in them, only thing that made my middle one sleep.
