I’ve just given my 2 year old a desert and just realised it contains alcohol

Just bought a lemon desert from Lidls we’ve all sat down to share it after dinner and half way through thought i could taste alcohol so checked the ingredients and it does contain it. I’m freaking out. He’s only had a tablespoon worth of a fair sized pack but I am freaking out and feel like absolute shot 😢 posting here for traffic.

Gripe water formulation has changed to no alcohol.

Floatinginatincan · 02/04/2024 18:20

You should log it with the police and then turn yourself into the social immediately.

Loopsielou · 02/04/2024 18:20

Sherry trifle anyone? Or when I was little the classic kids drink - a snowball!

How much alcohol do you reckons he’s consumed in 1 teaspoons of a Lidl lemon dessert?

I suspect there’s more in a glass of orange juice you’ve left out on the side and you wouldn’t think twice about that!

My guess is that it’s this:

Which looks like it’s 1.8% proof. Probably a little stronger than you’d expect but still a vanishingly small amount in a tablespoon.

I think, as others have said he’ll be fine. You couldn’t get drunk on a Lidl pudding even if you ate 100 of them.

I mean if he starts thinking he’s an amazing dancer, tells everyone they’re best mate and orders a kebab you may have a Leonel but otherwise relax

YaMuvva · 02/04/2024 18:29

Just keep an eye out for him staggering down the street and starting on passers by saying “come on then you cunt” with his tiny little fists in the air.

Otherwise you’re fine

AzureNewt · 02/04/2024 18:19

He’ll be fine for now but the real worry is that it’ll be a gateway dessert.

He’ll be absolutely fine. Honestly, a little
nip of booze is nothing to worry about! It’ll be a teeny tiny amount in a pudding.

What?? Is that true? I used to give mine gripe water! Off to Google

Don’t worry, the alcohol content was reduced to virtually nil by the 80s. It was the 50s when it was usefully alcoholic.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 02/04/2024 18:33

Don’t let him drive. 😉

YaMuvva · 02/04/2024 18:33

I gave DD gripe water 10 years ago, I’m pretty sure I didn’t have the same alcohol content as gin

No, see my post above. Alcohol content had reduced by then. Mothers no longer bought it for their own use.

ExtraOnions · 02/04/2024 18:48

…he’ll be on the Special Brew tomorrow ..

Fightingtobepositive · 02/04/2024 19:02

@AzureNewt yes that’s it and I’ve just noticed that it clearly states it to. I can’t believe I missed it.

thank you for all the lovely and light hearted comments it’s made me feel a little less shit.

I am so frustrated in myself. It is very clear when I taste it. I’m a bag of nerves. if it’s a small amount how can it taste so strong. I can’t believe it. It was a tablespoon worth not a teaspoon.

Honestly, why are you so worried? Literally nothing has happened. The kid will be fine. You could probably feed the little guy more and he’ll be fine.

These things happen. Forget it and move on. There is nothing to worry about.

Sidebeforeself · 02/04/2024 19:05

My little niece once downed the remnants of a glass of brandy before we could get to her. Her face was a picture but she was fine!

Mabelface · 02/04/2024 19:10

Just keep him away from the karaoke 😉

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 02/04/2024 19:12

He'll be fine. My nephew was really enjoying Christmas pudding at 1 1/2 when we suddenly realised about the brandy. We didn't give him seconds.

People genuinely used to give kids alcohol to help them sleep. (According to my MIL it doesn't work, you just end up with a drunk awake baby!😂) Obviously we now know it's a bad idea and don't do it, but plenty of kids have had quite a lot more alcohol than yours and been absolutely fine.

Ignore all the eye rollers. Sometimes you just need an extra adult perspective for reassurance.

Just found out recently that a snowball had alcohol in it. My brother and I loved those! 😁

Sidebeforeself · 02/04/2024 19:14

And cider lollies!

I love cider lollies!
Can't wait till summer to get some in.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 02/04/2024 19:15

My grandmother used to give us advocaat when we were little (and it was before she moved house so I would have been 3!). No I have no idea why (apart from the fact she was barking). We were all fine.

TeaandHobnobs · 02/04/2024 19:15

When my DS was about 18mo, I gave him a pain au raisin, that I later realised had rum soaked raisins 😳

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/04/2024 19:16

I don't know if this will reassure you or not, but I am MASSIVELY allergic to alcohol (sadly), but I can eat these types of desserts without a problem. I presume that the amount of actual alcohol (that hasn't had the alcoholic content cooked out) is very small.
