to think McDonald's have lost the main idea of "fast food"

urwildquoter24 · 02/04/2024 10:21

It's not even fast anymore. It takes at least 15 minutes on a good day to get food, and on a bad day even longer. The drive-thru is even worse, I was in there last weekend and there were three cars in front of me and took half an hour to get my food and go.

I haven't even seen McDonald's do anything particularly creative recently. They're just bringing back old things and the food really doesn't look anything like in there adverts (which we established years ago)

And don't start about the new Happy Meal toys!!!

McDonald's is basically where fast food started, and now I think it's lost it a bit.

So slow even my kids don’t want to go there any more. I worked there years ago as a teen and they would have a certain amount of food ready to be served. Someone was in charge of making sure they had enough ready but not too much.

The question was asked in response to a poster saying they only go to the THREE NEAR THEM in an emergency.

This is different to being on a motorway and finding only MacD's (and the like) at the services.

Someone living near 3 different MacD's probably does have other options in an emergency food situation as it's likely a large town or city.

My nearest is about 20 miles away and I know I'd pass a 24hr garage on the way. In fact that nearest one is by a BP with an M&S food so I'd go there.

About 18 months ago DS got a message from a young (17) female friend of his. She had woken up in the local public gardens having left home 24 hours previously. She had no idea how she got there, or what had happened, just that she hadn't taken her meds for at least 24 hours and had blood on her face.

He went straight there to meet her. I told him that I would come if he needed to and she was happy with that. Unless he thought something so serious had happened that they needed an adult without her consent. She did consent.

I took them to McDonald's. Why? Poor kid hadn't eaten for who knew how long. There were lots of people there, including security so if anything happened I had back up (she has several MH issues, and while I'm trained in MH I didn't know her history). I knew i could (just about) afford to feed them. I knew it was warm there.

(I will point out we did go somewhere quieter to clean her up first)

IMO that was an emergency. McDs was perfect for that situation. I mean, I could have made a sandwich before I left home and sat outside in the dark whilst she ate it. But it was in the middle of winter and freezing cold.

Not that I think you should only go in an emergency anyway. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a McDonald's.

Where's MacD's? Is their service better than McDonalds?

PenelopeTitsdrop1990 · 08/04/2024 08:41

Definitely down to the Uber eats/ Just eat drivers. Wasn't this bad before.

It was my own shorthand for McDonalds. I imagine 99.9% of readers of this thread understood that.

Some posters 😂
It's a common short hand for McDonald's, but even if it wasn't, it's bloody obvious.

JosiePosey · 08/04/2024 10:27

Its McD's, theres no A in it. There is in Maccie D's or Maccies, but McDonald's is one of the biggest brands on earth so the faux infamiliarity is ridiculous.

Mac D's is what it was commonly referred to when we were teens, didn't hear "Maccies" until I was in uni. The "a" has been added because it's pronounced "Mac D's" not "Mc D's".
I agree that the faux infamiliarity is ridiculous.

Hoplolly · 08/04/2024 10:53

What an odd hill to choose to die on.

So, you could have just corrected me rather than pretend you didn't know what I meant.

Which would be equally ridiculous 😂

Both our local ones are incredibly slow, and the drinks usually taste flat like they've been left on the side a while. I was in my nearest recently, none of the customers waiting received a single item for 10 minutes, but the delivery drivers got theirs quickly. However, as others have said, I've always found something missing in the deliveries, I think they can get away with it so they don't do a great job knowing we can just get a refund, but last time it was my DPs whole meal that was missing

Longma · 08/04/2024 11:13

Doesn't take that long when we go though it tends to be more service stations when we visit, rather than city/town based Ines. I order a fillet (fish) and even then it's not that long.

I guess towns and cities may get snarled up by more drive thru and Uber eats/deliveroo type pick ups too.

We never pay for ketchup, BBQ sauce. We just ask when picking it up,at the counter and they had over sachets. Some of the sides seem to come with the dips, automatically too.

I'm not worried about the Happy Meals as don't have a young child anymore. Though I support the idea of removing the small plastic toys. Surely that's a good thing long term if they are now giving out sustainable items or ones which are better environmentally.

I always call it "Maccie D's!

I agree although I don't think I've experienced quite the waits you have. I wonder if the menu has expanded too much that they can't have as much food ready to go. McChicken sandwich was my go-to for years and never really had to wait for that.

My Canadian friend calls it “Rotten Ronnies” which is my personal favorite name!

Shamelessly placemarking...

BobbyBiscuits · 02/04/2024 10:40

I was practically weeping having to wait about 10 mins for a single hamburger. There was tons of massive deliveroo etc orders in front of me.
It used to be you'd go up and they'd just hand you the hamburger. I guess it wasn't as fresh...
They have apparently changed their big Mac buns to brioche and cook onions into the burger patty now? Dk how that works if you hate onions!
The only time it's actually fast is maybe middle of the afternoon, after lunchtime.
They have to bring back the spicy nuggets though. I could eat 20 of those easily, lol

Edited

They have started selling them in Aldi 😁

BobbyBiscuits · 10/04/2024 19:19

@PunishmentSnart and they just opened an Aldi near me!! Yay!!
I've not used Aldi except abroad, only Lidl. I'll deffo check those out. But I do seriously go mad. I was ordering 40 a week during that blessed summer! I hope they taste the same 😁

user1477391263 · 11/04/2024 01:23

What different does brioche make?

Deathbyfluffy · 11/04/2024 01:25

WhatHaveIFound · 02/04/2024 10:31

Are you ordering a Filet? That's the only thing that takes any time in my experience (and DC hate it when I order one).

Everything else is reasonably fast but they're cooking it all to order these days (apart from fries) rather than piling food on the racks like they used to.

I find the thing that slows them down is the number of food deliveries they have to prepare.

Most things are still batch cooked and held - just the holding is in the back.
They certainly have a lot more focus on waste these days, though - so a lot less quantity is held.

JanglingJack · 11/04/2024 02:00

Spicy bean burger at McDs 20 years ago was awesome. I don't know why that was taken off the menu.

Ours trialled pizzas too. I've never met anyone that came across them or remembers them. The Magherita was lovely! I think they only did that and pepperoni. A little 7inch pizza in a box.

JanglingJack · 11/04/2024 02:06

urwildquoter24 · 08/04/2024 12:01

I know loads of people that have always call it Maccie Ds - don't worry about it too much.

I type McDs...

Who cares? Well apart from the poster who cares!

asdfgasdfg · 13/04/2024 14:24

I have black coffee so always ask for a couple of ice cubes. The Tottenham Court Road branch wanted to charge me!!! Got an apology and voucher from corporate. Some franchises will try anything for more money

Plannymcplanface · 13/04/2024 14:31

Came here to say exactly this.. neither fast, nor food …
